Chapter 237
Blair
POV
It was a day filled with sunshine and a breeze that softly caressed your skin. It was perfect for a day filled with the kinds of activities that filled your day with fun and laughter, love and joy. The kind of day you would look on fondly and with the memory of having done something with your family. The perfect weather for being outdoors and in the warmth of the sun. But the mood was somber. Melancholy. Filled with expressions that ranged from dread to anticipation to worry and even slight happiness. Today was a day that the pack would stand together, united by the one thing that always caused conflict and sometimes even internal conflict. But this time was different. This time everybody was of the same mind. Everybody believed that the punishment was just. Nobody had any objections to raise, no concerns to voice. Their voices were silent, the pack staring ruefully towards the front of the grounds as we waited, my mate and I at the forefront, my father inside the pack house with our children, unable to witness what was about to happen. I didn't bear him any ill will for this. I didn't blame him for not wanting to watch. It was too much to ask of him.
"Good morning" King Braedon addressed the pack, his voice tight, his expression grim, as he looked at each and everyone that was present "As you all know we are gathered here today, to witness the execution of a prisoner for their crimes. This prisoner is charged with numerous offenses, the primary ones being trafficking innocent women, omegas, rogues, even warriors and pack members in order to provide breeders for themselves and other packs. She has attempted to murder your Luna Queen and Alpha King. She has deliberately eluded capture."
He paused. The pack nodded in agreement and there were murmurs in the crowd. I stepped forward "I claim no blood relation to Brynn Ryker. I claim no sister bond. Her crimes are hers and hers alone. While we share the same last name, I have no desire to be claimed in relation to her. I agree with the judgment that has been made today and I will not intervene in the execution that is to take place. As Luna Queen, I wholeheartedly accept the decision and agree with your Alpha King."
I looked around the crowd meeting everybody's gazes as they looked at the ground or met mine with surprise and awe. Some of them even looked at me with admiration but none looked at me with condemnation for my decision. More murmurs. My mate looked at me pained but nodded and exhaled. "Brynn Ryker is also guilty of attempted murder of the future heirs of this pack" he declared with a hint of anger and disgust.
Gasps from the crowd along with knowing nods from some of them. I spotted Sierra in the back nodding, a serene expression on her face. Josie, too softhearted to watch as well, was in the nursery along with my father and the babies, helping to comfort him in this difficult time.
"We ask you here today for one simple reason. To bear witness as Brynn Ryker is brought forward for her crimes and executed. We ask that objections or protests be spoken now, before the prisoner is brought out in order to allow the execution to go smoothly" King Braedon added, glancing at the crowd who went dead silent and avoided his gaze.
Nobody wanted to speak up on Brynn's behalf. Several of her victims were staring at the front with malicious expressions on their faces. Some were even grinning with anticipation. King Braedon waited and then nodded, his eyes going cloudy as he mind-linked James to bring out the prisoner where we waited. Sarah looked pale, standing in the background. I nodded to her and she bit her lip. James would go and comfort her, once he had brought out Brynn.
We heard the screams first before they reached the group. Bloodcurdling ones, along with the derogatory vile insults she shouted at James with a screeching voice as he dragged her none too gently towards us in her restraints.
"You f*****g cunt, son of a b***h" she swore as he dragged her, her hands frantically trying to claw at his hands as she kicked and spat at him "a*****e. I swear I'll kill you" she spat, before he flung her right in front of us, her body hitting the ground with a large thud, causing her to give a sharp cry of pain.
Ouch. I winced. That had not been a gentle fling and must have hurt.
James looked mutinous as he glared down at her. His eyes darted up to King Braedon and then mine. He was unapologetic about the way he had just handled her. Not that I blamed him, given the way she had acted.
"I bring you the prisoner, Brynn Ryker" he announced stiffly "in one piece as the law demands."
"More's the pity" he added under his breath as I glanced at him with wry amusement.
Brynn scrambled to her feet, but two of our warriors snatched her and held her before she could take a step toward me or Braedon. James quietly walked to the back of the pack and gathered an upset-looking Sarah into his arms. She put her head against his chest, looking slightly ill, and closed her eyes. Brynn spat at me, the spittle landing at my feet as I deftly dodged.
"I hate you" she hissed, looking half crazed.
She no longer looked like her immaculate self, her blonde hair dirty and matted, her eyes dull with dark circles beneath her eyes. Her clothing was torn and shredded. Her bruises were faded and the majority of her wounds had healed over the last few hours but she still looked the worse for wear. I stared at her, expecting to feel something, a pang of sympathy, guilt perhaps. But all I felt was detached and numb. There was no pity, no sorrow for her. There were no feelings at all.
