Brynn stared at me as though she had seen a ghost, all the blood draining from her face. She looked speechless, a look of confusion on her face. She shook her head back and forth, refusing to believe what was right in front of her eyes. I tried not to smirk as my appearance had the intended effect. "No" she protested, as I stood over her, my eyes narrowed, my body tense, prepared to attack at the slightest movement or provocation from her "You're dead" she screamed at me, her voice shrill, her body shaking "I just watched your funeral. I saw them bury your casket." She was filled with denial, even as her eyes stared at me accusingly, unable to deny that I was flesh and blood right in front of her. I was no more dead than she was.
My voice was filled with disdain as my mate and father joined me silently. My father silently handed me a dress to put on which I slid over my head. "You saw a funeral that was put on specifically for your benefit" I rasped, as she trembled on the ground, "I wanted you to believe I was dead. Everything was just for show. I knew you wouldn't be able to help yourself. I knew you would still want revenge against Braedon and our father" I said harshly "and the only way to lure you out was to make you think you succeeded in killing me. Tell me Brynn" I said, looking her straight in the eyes "Did my funeral move you?" I mocked "did you feel any remorse for what you tried to do to me?"
I doubted it.
My father's hand moved, grabbing something from his pocket. I watched detached as he placed the item into Braedon's hand, Braedon quickly plunging the syringe into Brynn's leg and filling her with wolfsbane. Brynn stared up at her father and Braedon, a betrayed look on her face. She was in bad condition due to the fight, I noticed with satisfaction, my heart hardened against the pleading look on her face and the resignation she exhibited. She knew that this time there was no getting away, even if she didn't want to acknowledge how truly trapped she was this time. "I don't understand" she licked her lips, glancing at the three of us, bewildered, dazed "I stabbed you with that knife. You should have died, or the babies" she whispered and I glared at her, my hatred and resentment surging to the surface.
"I almost died because of you. It's a miracle I didn't, nor did my children" I said, my voice dripping with venom "As it is, it's taking every single fiber of my being not to wrap my hands around you and strangle you to death right now."
I had never wanted to do that more than this moment. The sheer thought that my children could have died because of her was more than I could bear.
She widened her eyes and then gave a bitter laugh "Do it" she said, as I stared down at her "Do it. Kill me" she pleaded.
I shook my head, denying her request. "To kill you would only grant you a painless death and deny those that deserve to attend your execution."
It would be far more than she deserved. I would not be granting her such leniency.
"I'm your sister," she said as though shocked at my cruelty, as Braedon grabbed her arm and hoisted her to her feet "Your flesh and blood. Father," she said, whimpering and turning to him, trying to reach him with a shaking hand as he stepped back, a look of regret on his face "I'm your daughter, how can you do this to me? How can you let them kill me like this? Do you not care for me at all? I thought you loved me" she screamed, Braedon's hand like a vice grip around her arm as he forced her to start moving forward, her body resisting and flailing. "You are no sister of mine. We may share the same blood, as unfortunate as it is" I said to her frostily, Braedon halting as I addressed her, tears trailing down her pale cheeks "but you are not my sister. Blood means nothing to me. Loyalty means everything. We could have been sisters once Brynn, but you chose to go down a dark path and cause harm to a lot of people. You had the power to change things in your pack, to make things better. You chose to do something far worse and sinister instead" I shook my head, eyeing her with contempt.
She glared at me. She spat defiantly and I deftly moved, avoiding the spittle which landed on the floor in front of me. "f**k you" she snarled "acting so high and mighty. You were nothing but a pathetic omega before. Do you think that because you're an Alpha wolf you're something special? Do you think that you're superior to me? Why? Because the Alpha King is your mate? Do you think you would have made a better life for yourself if your mate had been anyone else" She threw back her head and gave an incredulous laugh, a look of astonishment and amusement on her face.
I marveled that she was still able to find something amusing about me to laugh about considering the dire situation she was in.
I stiffened. “That's the difference between us Brynn" I leaned forward and fixed my eyes on hers as she stared at me with contempt and the merest hint of fear "I've never thought that I'm better than anyone else in the pack. I've never looked down on someone because they are of a lower position in the pack. Everybody has a role to play. Each role is as vitally important as anyone else's.
My wolf is strong and I will use it to defend my pack to the best of my ability and keep my children and even my mate safe from harm. I will not use my wolf as a method of killing or harming an innocent shifter. My wolf is not a weapon. It is a defense. You have yet to learn that" I told her quietly "and I'm afraid that such a concept is beyond your grasp or ability to comprehend. Our wolves are capable of so much more than being used to fight or take over packs. I wish you had learned that lesson, it would have done you a world of good" I finished in a sombre tone.
