Chapter 234
King Braedon POV
The other wolf jumped and skidded back, looking pleased with itself. I sensed Alpha Johnathon come out from the trees a pained look on his face. I turned my head, seeing the anguish and the devastation on his face. "You don't have to be here," I told him quietly.
He shook his head, his eyes on the fight. "I know and yet, I can't force myself to walk away. Part of this is my fault" he whispered, his eyes filled with grief "My actions have led to this moment and I can't undo the past, all I can do is watch and regret the trouble I have caused with my cowardice and inability to lead like a proper Alpha and father should have." The two wolves pawed the ground, eyeing each other. Brynn's wolf lunged forward, snapping her jaws and tackling the other wolf furiously. I sucked in a breath as she managed to score a hit against the other wolf, who gave a low growl, kicking out and sending Brynn's wolf skidding sideways. Brynn's wolf was tiring from the fight and was losing blood from its various injuries. But there was a look of determination on her face. It was one that said she refused to die. Not here and certainly not by the other wolf's hand.
Brynn's wolf swished its tail angrily. "She can't keep this up for much longer" Johnathon muttered, eyeing his daughter's wolf and shaking his head "I'm surprised she's lasted this long. She always hated to train. I guess the thought of losing to the other wolf is too much for her to bear," he said a little exasperated.
"Or the consequences of her actions are too much for her to think about. The realization that if she loses, she finally faces the punishments for her actions. The thought of dying, or being executed, is a powerful motivator to keep fighting, even when you're exhausted and have little strength in reserve" I told him.
His face said he silently agreed.
We watched in silence. Brynn's wolf tried to turn and run, only to be cut off by the other wolf who had anticipated her movements. The other wolf let out a vicious snarl, glaring at Brynn's wolf with contempt. Its tail swished angrily. It tensed its body. Brynn's wolf had a look of brief panic on its face. I sensed that Brynn was coming to the realization she wasn't going to last much longer.
"Give up" I shouted "and retain what little dignity you have left Brynn Ryker."
Her wolf turned her head to face me and then her lip curled back. She lunged towards me and the other wolf cut her off again, growling lowly in its throat.
"Maybe she wants to die in her wolf form" Alpha Johnathon muttered sadly "It would be a far sight better than execution." I inclined my head "Perhaps. But there are a lot of people that want to see her executed" I acknowledged "and a lot of people that bear a grudge towards your daughter Alpha Johnathon" I added tightly.
People who had been hurt by Brynn's trafficking. Alpha Johnathon's lips tightened as he gave a terse nod, staring at the ground. I felt for the man. He was in an impossible situation.
Brynn's wolf had its tail between its legs now. It was backing away, its eyes scanning the surroundings frantically, seeking an exit as the other wolf began to advance on her.
She gave a growl, but the other wolf was unfazed, continuing to slowly stalk towards her as she looked over her shoulder, eyeing the forest that was so close and yet too far to lose herself in before the other wolf would catch up to her. The other wolf lunged, its head lowered, and sent her flying back into another tree, causing the branch to fall and hit her, Brynn's wolf was stunned for a minute as she frantically kicked the branch off and stood up awkwardly. She had a limp now. The branch must have injured one of her back legs.
The other wolf lowered its head and patiently waited for Brynn to make a move. Brynn gave a painful yelp as she placed her back leg on the ground, her body trembling.
"Just end it" Alpha Johnathon murmured, his facial expression anguished "Just stop fighting and lay down" he pleaded under his breath "You're finished. You're too injured to keep fighting."
Brynn's wolf shook its head from side to side and then narrowed its eyes. Alpha Johnathon exhaled in frustration. His words were having no effect. Brynn chose to slowly circle around the other wolf, her wound slowly healing. The other wolf moved, faster than the eye could see, its claws ripping across Brynn's wolf's midsection and gouging deep, blood pouring out of the wound. Alpha Johnathon sucked in an agonized breath.
I put a hand on Johnathon's shoulder to comfort him, knowing what words I offered would do little to ease his pain or soothe his soul.
"Johnathon, perhaps you should go inside. No father wants to see his daughter in such a state and be unable to help her" I murmured.
"I have to see" he protested fiercely, his eyes glistening with unshed tears "I can't bear to leave. I won't interfere, but this is my punishment Alpha King Braedon and I accept it wholeheartedly. This is my pain to bear" he exhaled.
I marveled at his strength of character. First, he had lost his mate, his ex-wife to execution in front of his eyes and now he watched his daughter slowly dying in front of him. I felt my throat constrict with emotion. Brynn's wolf was still standing but barely. Its body was swaying back and forth, its eyes beginning to look glazed and distant. She looked as though she was about to topple over at any moment. She continued to limp. By this stage, it was a pity I felt for Brynn. The other wolf examined her closely, its body still tensed to attack, as it stood several feet away. It was wary of Brynn's weakness, perhaps sensing that it might be a trap of some kind, and was preparing itself in case she made a sudden lunge or leap towards it.
Brynn's wolf staggered forward a few steps. Its wounds were slowly healing, but the blood loss was severe. It was whimpering in pain. It fell sideways, its legs scrabbling weakly. Its head flopped to the ground. The other wolf let out a huff, pawing impatiently at the ground. There came the sound of bones cracking and adjusting and then, in the open, lay the naked body of Brynn, covered in scrapes and gouges, blood trickling around her body, an agonized expression on her face as the other wolf got threateningly near to her.
I moved closer as did Alpha Johnathon, although I held out a hand, preventing the man from going to Brynn. He looked torn, while the other wolf stood by her, its eyes flashing with rage.
"Have mercy" sobbed Brynn, shaking violently, curling up in a fetal position and staring wide-eyed at the wolf "Please. I can't fight anymore" she sobbed "Whoever you are, you've won. Are you happy now Father?" she turned her head and screamed at Johnathon who winced "kill me already and be done with it" she shrieked, glaring at the wolf defiantly "end me, you son of a b***h" she roared, panting and wailing.
The other wolf shifted and glared down at her.
