Chapter 211 What Was She Afraid Of
When the clock hit the afternoon, Nancy went to work in the hospital.
The first thing she did as soon as she arrived was to visit Boyd in the ward.
At this time, he had already calmed down while his wife accompanied him.
"Doctor Nancy is here," the woman uttered and quickly stood up as soon as she saw Nancy.
"What happened to Mr. He yesterday? Did he have such symptoms before?" the latter asked, taking a quick glance at her patient. The woman thought for a while before eventually shaking her head. "No, everything was fine yesterday."
"Alright. Thank you for letting me know." After saying that, she comforted the woman and assured her that everything would be alright. As soon as Nancy stepped out and left them, she slightly cocked her head to the side, thinking how everything seemed to be so weird.
How could a man suddenly lose control of his mind without any history of mental illness?
These speculations ran in her mind as she walked to the medicine room.
"Who gave Boyd his medicine yesterday?" she asked Erin.
"Me, Director. I made sure I got the right medicine. Boyd's wound has almost been recovered, and I brought him an anti-inflammatory drug. I don't think something wrong would happen," Erin replied affirmatively.
However, Nancy wasn't convinced, so she continued, "Are you sure the medicine wasn't somehow switched with a different one?"
Erin shook her head, but then suddenly, she recalled something from yesterday. "Before I sent the medicine, I remember going to the toilet first. Is it...?"
Nancy's hunch was almost confirmed. "Okay, I got it. You can go back to your work," she ordered, but her mind wandered somewhere else.
"Alright." Although hesitant, Erin had no choice but to leave.
Then, Nancy hurried to the monitoring room and requested, "Please get the surveillance video of last night for me."
"Actually, Director Nancy, we are checking it right now. The surveillance camera was broken for no reason yesterday," the staff in charge of monitoring informed with a frown. And upon hearing that Nancy was bewilderedly speechless.
Was this a coincidence or intentional?
Her chest was so stuffy, almost constraining her to breathe.
It seemed that someone had plotted everything!
'Who would do such a thing?' Nancy thought deeply.
Although she was very upset, she had to cheer up and prepare for the operation in the afternoon.
So to avoid distractions, she turned off her phone and walked into the operating room.
However, despite her focus, the operation was still delayed for half an hour as she had to inject the patient with anesthetic twice.
This had never happened in her entire career as a doctor. Normally, she'd inject it once, and the surgery would proceed as planned. But now, her patient aggrievedly winced in seething pain.
And Nancy could only stare at the little girl with sad eyes while her heart sank inexplicably.
When night fell, and darkness coated the surroundings, Nancy sat alone in her office.
Everyone had already clocked out, and she was the only left on that floor.
Just like the ambiance outside, she intentionally left her office dim. With her heavy breathing and exhaustion, she leaned against the chair. "Director Nancy, why are you still on duty?" Erin suddenly came over.
In fact, she was about to get off work, but upon seeing that Nancy was still in the office, she stayed for a while.
She didn't intend to disturb Nancy and planned to leave after her.
Unexpectedly, it seemed that her boss had no intention of leaving anytime soon.
So Erin came over to ask.
"You can get off now. I'll leave soon," uttered Nancy tiredly, stroking her temple to somehow ease the pain.
"Well, I'm gonna head off." Then, Erin changed into her casual clothes and left.
When she went downstairs, she gazed up at Nancy's office's dark window, and her heart trembled.
'I wondered what's bothering her,'
Erin thought, remembering that she had saved Charles' phone number when the latter called her while sending her the medicine.
Perhaps she could call to inform him about Nancy.
At this time, Charles had already prepared dinner.
"Bobby, why hasn't mommy come back yet?" Nadia with a depressed look, sitting at the table.
"She probably had an operation. I bet she'll be here in no time!" replied the young boy, already eyeing the food with his salivating mouth.
"But, I'm already hungry." Nadia looked at the dishes on the table and gulped.
"Then, you eat first!" He picked up the chicken wings and put them into Nadia's bowl. "Here, eat this."
"I have to wait for mommy!" Nadia insisted, sporting a pout on her lips.
While the kids pondered on the dinner, Charles came out of the kitchen and glanced at his wristwatch.
Nancy would usually be back before eight o'clock in the evening, but she seemed to be late today.
If she had an emergency operation, she would have already called him.
'What happened? Where is she?'
Charles thought while taking out his phone to call her.
However, after attempting several times, he found her phone was turned off.
"I'm going to pick up your mommy. You two be good, understand?" Charles warned the kids with narrowed eyes.
"Okay, daddy." The two kids nodded obediently.
At the same time, Charles received a call from Erin as he was about to get out of the house.
"Hello, Mr. Fu," Erin greeted, sounding a little embarrassed from the other line.
Because it was an unregistered phone number on Charles' end, he asked indifferently, "Who's this?"
"Mr. Fu, I'm Erin, one of Nancy's subordinates. We met a few days ago when you came to deliver medicine. I just called to tell you that Director Nancy doesn't seem to be in good shape today. Actually, her operation didn't go very well, and she is alone in the office right now with all the lights off. Please pick her up. She's in there."
"Thank you for letting me know," Charles shortly replied. It was lucky for Nancy to have such a colleague worry for her-not to mention, a very cautious one.
"You're welcome. Goodbye, Mr. Fu," Erin uttered before hanging up the phone.
She was a little elated to hear such a well-respected man express his thanks to someone like her.
So with that, Erin went out of the hospital feeling a little lighter than she did just a while ago.
On the other hand, Charles immediately drove to the hospital, beating all the traffic lights as much as possible. At this point, all he thought of was Nancy.
And sure enough, the lights in her office were all switched off.
He walked into the ward building and went straight to her office.
Inside was Nancy, who threw herself into the darkness while her painful memories came rushing in her head.
The unbearable past, like a poisonous bonny, strangled her neck, rendering her almost suffocated to her seat. While those memories filled with misery haunted her, she suddenly felt useless and helpless.
How could she call herself a doctor?
She blamed herself over and over again while wanting nothing but to be eaten by the darkness of the night.
At this crucial point, Nancy only wished to be left alone so she could reflect on her thoughts.
However, the lights suddenly turned on, revealing the familiarity of her office.
And to her utter surprise, Charles appeared in front of her, panting as though he ran all the way here as fast as he could.
"What's wrong, honey?" His gentle voice almost sent her tears rolling down her cheeks.
But Nancy refrained herself from crying and instead flashed him a bitter smile. "Nothing. What are you doing here?"
she asked in a weak tone.
Staring at his delicate handsome face, she thought, 'Can I tell him about my past?'
Nancy grew up keeping all her painful experiences to herself. She had always been a reserved person who never felt comfortable opening up to people.
And the strong facade she mustered was just a disguise to deceive herself and the people around her.
"Nancy, what happened?" Charles asked again after noticing the hesitation on her face.
"Nothing. I'm just a little tired," she said, wishing he would just drop the subject.
"Too tired to turn on your phone?" This time, Charles walked closer and kneeled before her.
She stood up, unbuttoned her white coat, and said slowly, "I'm sorry, I forgot."
Charles straightened up, and intently stared at her with a pair of calculating eyes.
He never liked it whenever she was in guard. Even if they were practically a couple at this point, she still hesitated to share secrets with him.
'How could she not trust me?
What was she so afraid of?'
Charles couldn't help feeling depressed and beaten as he thought of these questions.
