Stella wiped away her tears and said to Yvonne, “Yvonne, could you help me with the ointment?”
“Of course.” Yvonne treated Stella like a child.
She applied the ointment to Stella’s butt with a cotton swab while instructing, “Mrs. Foley, be good today. Mr. Foley wants you to stay at home and not go anywhere.”
“Fine,” Stella replied gloomily. It was Saturday anyway, so she had no plans to leave the house.
At noon, Brian called Yvonne to check on Stella’s condition. Yvonne replied, “Mrs. Foley is fine. She has applied the ointment and is having lunch at home.”
Stella was eating nearby and overheard that it was Brian on the phone. She said, “Yvonne, give me the phone. I’ll talk to him.”
Yvonne handed her the phone. When Stella took the phone, Brian remained silent on the other end. After a while, Stella felt anxious and called out, “Brian…”
Why wasn’t he speaking? Did something happen?
“Yeah?” Brian finally responded.
“How’s Sharon?” Stella squeezed the phone, feeling a strange nervousness.
“She just finished the tests and is resting in her room now. We won’t know the results until tomorrow morning at the earliest,” Brian replied.
Stella didn’t know what to say. Sharon had hidden the fact that she had been coughing up blood from Brian, so Stella didn’t dare to bring it up. She fidgeted with her fingers and decided to wait until the results were out tomorrow before discussing anything further
“Have you eaten your lunch?” Brian asked.
Stella nodded. “I’m having it now. You should stay with Sharon at the hospital. I’ll behave at home.”
In truth, she wanted to go to the hospital to see Sharon, but Yvonne had just told her that Jessica was there taking care of Sharon. Since Sharon liked Jessica a lot, Stella knew she wasn’t needed there.
Sharon now saw Jessica as a prospective daughter–in–law, making Stella feel like an outsider.
At the hospital, Brian stood in the corridor, smoking. It was a rare habit that he only indulged in when he was particularly agitated.
Just then, Jessica came out of Sharon’s room and whispered, “Brian, Mrs. Foley has fallen asleep.” For the past few days, she had been tirelessly looking after Sharon at the hospital, and the latter had come to see her as a prospective daughter–in–law.
Brian glanced at her. “Thank you for these past few days.”
“It’s what I should do.” Jessica hesitated before saying “Mrs. Foley mentioned wanting to give a name to
the baby in my belly. Do you think it’s okay?”
Brian remained silent for a moment. “Let her do what she wants.”
Jessica’s eyes lit up at his response. With her continued care at the hospital, if Sharon turned out to be fine, Jessica was confident she could marry Brian.
Her wish was finally about to come true. She only prayed that Sharon wouldn’t die. After all, Sharon was her trump card.
Brian stayed at the hospital until late in the evening before returning home. He had dinner with Sharon and watched her fall asleep before leaving.
It was already 9:00 pm when he got back home. A light was on in the hallway. Brian took off his coat and was about to sit down when he noticed a slender figure descending the stairs barefoot.
“Brian?” Stella took small steps down. Her long hair cascaded over her shoulders, and her pale face showed a hint of confusion. “Is that you?”
“Yeah,” Brian replied under the dim lights before sitting down on the couch.
When Stella walked over, his gaze fell on her feet. “Why aren’t you wearing shoes?”
“I forgot.” She had heard the car outside and rushed down without thinking too much.
Brian watched her silently. The feeling of someone waiting for him when he came back made him suddenly feel a sense of belonging.
He beckoned to her. Stella sensed that his mood was off. It seemed different from this morning. She had/ a premonition that Sharon’s condition might not be good, so she obediently approached and sat down
next to him.
“Why are you sitting so close?” he asked, surprised by her proximity.
