When Fate Intervenes (Giselle and Anthony)

Chapter 11

After leaving Jadeston, where she lived for years, Giselle went to the train station and bought a ticket to a random place she pointed at. Then, she started on her first trip after her divorce. Within a day, Giselle traveled from the northern part of the country to the south where the weather was considerably warmer and more humid.

She took her bags with her and got off the train in a strange new town called Longville.

It was quite different here than it was in Jadeston, which was like the city center hub of the country. Life here in this tiny town wasn't as fast-paced.

Giselle found a hotel and checked her bags into her room. Then, she started to wander aimlessly around town for food and sightseeing.

She ordered some spaghetti from a curbside restaurant and sat down at a table closest to the street. She felt herself relax completely as she sipped on some iced tea.

Her phone suddenly lit up with a notification. She only had a handful of contacts in her newly registered phone number, so she saw both of lan's messages at once.

"I say, Ms. Lockhart, why didn't you properly tell me who you were when you said you wanted a divorce? I'm kind of caught in the middle now... Anthony's mad at me because I refused to give him your new number. But anyway, here's a letter he wrote to you. Maybe have a look at it when you're free?"

Giselled had expected Anthony to get mad. But, she didn't think he would write her a letter. She was mildly surprised at this.

She tapped on the document file and downloaded it. The document was filled to the brim with words. But, the first thing she looked at was the total number of words at the bottom of the screen. Eight thousand words?

It was just a divorce, so why did Anthony write an eight-thousand-word letter to her? Was it even necessary? Surely this wasn't a letter to sue her for anything, right?

Still, Giselle was in a good mood because she'd just successfully managed to leave him, and she didn't want anything to ruin it. She wasn't about to read something that would affect her now.

So, with this thought in mind, Giselle closed the document and set her phone to silent mode before digging into her spaghetti bolognese.

After she was done with her food, she then wandered into the local supermarket and bought all sorts of snacks while browsing around. She then ate her heart out as she exchanged all of the complex emotions she'd accumulated in her for a huge appetite.

She got back to her hotel room later that night and sent lan two messages. The first one was to thank him, and the second one was a document file. Anthony was overjoyed when he received the forwarded document file. He finally felt as if he could finally be at ease, even if just for a little bit. He tapped on the document file with a heart full of hope. However, when he read the words in the file, he was too stunned for words.

"Too many words. I'm not reading this. We're divorced, so stop bothering me."

There were only three short sentences in the file. Anthony could hear his heart being dashed to pieces as a tsunami of emotions enveloped him.

His fingers started typing away on the keyboard as he composed a reply, wanting to send it back to her. However, he recalled the line saying he wrote too much and started hitting the "backspace" button in anger.

Finally, Anthony ran out of all his patience. He threw his phone onto the bed and slid to the floor in a boneless heap, closing his exhausted eyes.

His messed-up mind started playing Giselle's video in his head again. The scenes were clear and vivid.

Anthony reached toward the table and took the camera. He dragged the slider to the end and rewatched the ending part. Finally, he paused the video just as Giselle brought Melanie's name up.

Finally, 36 hours after Giselle left him, Anthony found the reason for his divorce.

As it turned out, Giselle knew that something was up between Melanie and himself.

However, as soon as he came to that realization, Anthony felt his heart skipping a few beats. He started to panic. He held his head in his hands as he tried to recall when and where he'd made his first mistake.

The scenes from the past few days replayed in his head. Anthony stopped when he came to the day he was moving out of his house.

While he and Castor were busy bringing boxes of his belongings downstairs, Giselle and Melanie seemed to have been alone for quite a long while.

But counting back, that had already been the ninth day of the divorce cooling-off period. Even if Giselle accidentally learned about something only on that day, she still wouldn't have been able to predict it in advance.

If that was the case, then Anthony had to go all the way back to the two days she went to the law firm and lied to him about needing his signature on the house deed.

When Anthony finally remembered what happened the day before that, his face turned deathly pale in color.
