Chapter 10
"You and I both signed the agreement a month ago. So, from today onward, we're both free and single once again. Don't come looking for me after I'm gone. I wish you all the best with your new lover, Melanie Eastwood.
"I hope you'll also wish me well for the rest of my life."
Every single word Giselle said felt like an explosion inside Anthony's head.
He couldn't believe his ears. His eyes widened into plates as his lips started to quiver.
What had Giselle meant by them both having already signed the agreement a month ago? What did she mean when she said they were already divorced?
When had he ever signed any agreement of this sort?
The camera fell from Anthony's hands onto the document folder, sending it crashing to the ground.
The folder opened, displaying the first page of the document with the huge words "Divorce Agreement" printed out in bold letters in the center.
Anthony quickly picked it up and flipped all the way to the last page. He saw Giselle's signature on it at once.
There was also another signature in the space next to hers, just about an inch away. And, Anthony was more than familiar with this particular signature, because it was his own penmanship. His name had been scribbled in the space with a flourish. Suddenly, all the tiny pieces of the puzzle he'd ignored finally fell together in his head.
Back when he saw Giselle at his law firm, she'd told him that she'd gone there to get his signature for the deed. However, she'd descended the stairs at that time, and lan's office was located on the floor above his.
lan had asked him to pass the divorce property division agreement to Giselle at the restaurant bar the next round, and Giselle had looked slightly panicked when she saw him appear.
And for the past month, whenever he realized that something was missing from the house, it had always been something that once belonged to her.
Anthony thought about the layout of the things and furniture at his new house and came to the conclusion that she had done all of these deliberately.
Giselle had told him a massive lie and did everything right under his nose, even secretly having him sign off on the divorce papers, before finally leaving by herself.
After finally managing to piece everything together, Anthony was enraged. He grabbed the documents and the camera before running out of the place and driving straight to the law firm. Then, he rushed into lan's office on the second floor and slammed the documents down on his desk. "Were you the one who handled this divorce case, Mr. Lawson?"
lan set down the mug of coffee in his hand when he saw how impatient Anthony looked. He then took the document from the table and flipped through the pages.
"Yes, it was me. What's the matter?"
Anthony could feel his anger peaking. He couldn't think rationally any longer as he roared at his own colleague, "Why hadn't you told me earlier about Giselle's case?"
lan still couldn't make heads or tails of the situation. What did Anthony mean by this?
"No, everything in this case is compliant with standard procedure and has already been sent for trial. There shouldn't be anything wrong with it. Why should I have told you about it?"
"It's related to me, so of course you should have told me!"
lan's jaw dropped as he finally made sense of Anthony's words. He quickly flipped to the last page and looked at the name of the male divorcee.
It said, "Anthony Grayson".
Wait, Anthony Grayson?
Giselle Lockhart's husband was Anthony Grayson?
Anthony was married? Since when? Wasn't he supposed to be single?
There were too many questions in lan's head. His facial expression wouldn't stop changing every split second.
"I had no idea Ms. Giselle Lockhart was your wife! Aren't you single?"
lan's words felt like a bucket of ice water to Anthony's head, quenching all of his fires at once.
After recollecting his senses, he realized that he'd gone overboard with his actions and hurriedly apologized.
lan didn't care much about it. However, he now wanted to know what exactly was going on.
But, Anthony was in a hurry to find Giselle. He wasn't in the mood to explain things to lan.
"Mr. Lawson, I'll tell you everything next time when I have the time for it. Can you please just tell me how to contact Giselle now? I've lost all contact with her. But as her lawyer, I know you've got the means to get a hold of her."
Giselle had indeed left behind her contact number and address before leaving. However, lan was an experienced old fox in the legal field and refused to give Anthony her contact.
"Anthony, you're also in the legal field, so you should know that it's against the law to leak our clients' information. Don't make this hard for me. Ms. Lockhart is your ex-wife after all, so you can surely find a way to contact her if you just think harder. "Don't get impatient and slowly look for her. Her emotions have been in check for the past few days, so she's fine and not in any danger."
However, lan had severely overestimated Anthony.
Even though Anthony had been married for three years, he didn't have the contact numbers of any of Giselle's family members or friends. He couldn't even get in touch with Giselle's parents and had no idea where her family home was. Anthony had absolutely no way of contacting her, so he tried his best to convince lan by getting sentimental and pleading with his words.
However, no matter what he said, lan still rejected him.
Since Anthony couldn't think of anything else, he decided to take a step back and ask lan to forward his letter to Giselle via a text message document.
After work that day, lan texted Anthony, saying that Giselle had seen his message but hadn't replied to it yet.
Anthony hurriedly opened up his WhatsApp wanting to send Giselle a message. However, he realized that her photo had turned gray and her status now said the number was no longer registered on WhatsApp.
Did Giselle really have to cut off all ties with him as soon as she divorced him like this?
For the first time ever, after knowing Giselle for ten years, Anthony suddenly felt as if he was only just starting to learn about her.
