Two Alphas, One Mate

Chapter Happiness Does Not Wait

Diana

He’s not dead.

He’s not dead

HE’S NOT DEAD!

HE’S NOT DEAD!

I kept repeating those words in my head in a panic, but I couldn’t sense his heartbeat. He hasn’t moved from the floor since he initially collapsed.

His life was fading away faster than I could breathe in air.

After realizing what happened, I froze, unable to comprehend what was happening.

My brother and Damian were both lifeless on the ground. They both came here to save me, and I couldn’t do a damn thing to save them.

Tears were pouring down my cheeks, and throat was so tight I couldn’t bare to breathe again, but I had to do something.

We were heading towards the doorway as Aria, Aaron and the others stood silently, watching us make our exit. My arms were tightly wrapped around Loki’s neck, and my legs were too weak to walk, but I felt a new power within me, giving me the strength to go back.

I looked up to Loki, “Let me say goodbye.”

He stopped his pace and sighed heavily, “Luna…” He looked back to Damian on the floor, “There’s no time.”

“If she wants to waste more time before our reinforcements get here, then so be it. Makes it easier for me to catch up to you.” Aria smirked and latched her arm around Aaron, like they were watching a performance.

Loki took a deep breath in, “As you command Luna.” He carried me back to where Damian’s body laid motionless. I wish I had the time to say goodbye to Adam again, but there wasn’t enough time. I could hear Eric’s voice in the background of my head yelling that more warriors were closing in fast.

We were walking on a thin line, and I had to make it quick.

I got down from Loki’s arms and limped over to Damian. My hands went onto his cold body. It was chilling to feel his once warm, almost furnace like heat turn into ice cold stiffness, but out of all the coldness, his face was resting peacefully as if he was in a deep sleep.

Staring at him reminded me of all the things I was going to miss without him.

His soft touch and grizzly voice.

His caring personality that would never dissipate over time, instead, grow deeper with age.

His body, his smile, his eyes, and lastly...

His lips.

I leaned over and softly brought my lips to his. The kiss immediately sparked a tidal wave of emotions and memories that made me hold onto him a little tighter.

There were so many good memories, and the sad part was, those good memories were for such a small amount of time of actually knowing him.

But even though we were not together for long, the memories would last a lifetime.

Memories of our first time together.

The day we watched the sunset overlooking Fenrir territory.

His expression the day I told him I was pregnant. He never thought he was going to be a father, and the way he looked at me that day would be imprinted in my mind forever. It was pure joy, and now, I wasn’t sure if our family would be whole again without him.

Damian and I were not one, but two souls combined, connected to our pack like parents connected to their children.

I took his hand and placed it on my stomach. Another burst of tears poked through my eyes, streaming down my cheeks onto Damian’s lifeless body. It felt like there was a literal golf ball in my throat, choking me into submission.

I couldn’t comprehend my new reality.

He was gone and there was no coming back.

I placed my lips on his one last time, but the kiss wasn’t the same, it was cold, and the sparks were no longer there.

“We will always love you Damian. I couldn’t have asked for a better father for our babies,” I whispered softly to him as I kept his hand on my stomach, hoping my touch would give him new life, but there was nothing.

I couldn’t heal him if he was already dead.

“I love you forever, in this world and the next. You can rest now.” I gently wiped the tears from my face and got up to my feet.

Loki put his hand up to me, “We must go, more are coming Luna.”

My heart skipped a beat, something was pulling me to him.

I looked over to Holden laying on the bed across the room. “Wait.”

“LUNA WE MUST GO NOW,” Loki pushed his hand to me, but I started walking towards Holden.

I had to say goodbye. I kept thinking of their mother, Luna Soyra, looking down at her sons, both dead in the same room, alone, most likely to be tossed into an unmarked grave.

Aria started to laugh, “If your crazy Luna wants to stay here, be our guest!”

I narrowed my eyes onto Holden’s face poking out onto the side of the bed.

“Diana what the hell are you doing? You said goodbye, LETS LEAVE NOW!” Loki anxiously stepped forward, but thankfully didn’t press me further.

I kept hearing a woman’s voice but was unable to figure out what she was saying. I don’t know why or how, but I felt like she was telling me to say goodbye to both of them.

I knew in my heart it was Luna Soyra speaking to me. She was filling my head with her thoughts, and her feelings right up until the day she died. Maybe it was from my delirious state, but it was like I was embodying her. I felt a piece of her inside me, telling me to let them go.

No matter what Holden did in my life, he was still my first mate, and the father of one of my children.

I had to do this.

I sat next to him and softly ran my hand across the side of his face. He had the same peaceful expression as Damian, like he was in a deep sleep.

Of course his countless deceptions will never be forgotten, but I had to look past it. I had to see what Luna Soyra was showing me.

A child who lost his mother.

A child who was alone for so long, with only his barbaric father to whisper in his ear for years after, filling his head with hate and tyranny.

He was a child that sought out love but forgot how to love another. His walls were built so high that not even I was able to climb over them.

Maybe near his end he managed to see the light, but it was too late.

Unfortunately for all of us, happiness does not wait. It can disappear in the blink of an eye.

“I forgive you,” I whispered and softly kissed his lips, holding myself there only for a brief moment.

His skin was much colder than Damian’s. It was like the flame was put out and he was just a bare wick to a candle.

I let go and watched Holden bask in a peaceful slumber one last time. I wondered if he really found peace in the end, or was he aimlessly wondering in the afterlife, hoping to fill the void he tried so desperately to fill for so many years.

“Diana?” Suddenly Adam’s voice emerged from the floor.

He was alive.

I gasped, “Adam?!” I turned my head to see him sitting up from the floor. My adrenaline was kicking into overdrive as I ran over to his side, “Oh my god! Your alive! We have to go now!”

His hand patted onto his chest. “Damian doesn’t joke around with his body armour.” He pulled out the bullet embedded into the chest piece and threw it the ground. “Wait…” He looked over to Damian on the floor, “What happened?”

“There’s no time, we need to go.” I pulled onto his arm, and he started to get up.

I looked over to Loki, “Help him get out of here, I can walk.”

He immediately narrowed his eyes to me. “NO, he’s fine, but you are not,” he lifted me up into his arms without a moment’s hesitation, but I didn’t resist because he was right. I was the weakest I’ve ever been in my entire life, and I was only getting worse.

Just as we were approaching the doorway, I caught view of Adam, staring at Damian’s body on the ground. Adam’s eyes were cloudy, reddened, and almost to the point where he was going to tear up. I’ve never witnessed my brother cry but seeing him watch Damian look the way he did sent shivers down my spine. I wondered what got them to this point, but there was no time to chat, there was barely enough time to escape.

“Tic tock Luna, time is running out. Our pack is almost here for the clean up.” Aaron smiled one last time before exchanging looks with Adam.

“I’ll find you again you bastard. I will never forget this,” Adam growled.

“You’re lucky I’m letting you walk. I’ll take that as a submission for your Alpha title.”

Just before Adam could reply, Loki placed his hand on his shoulder and pulled him out of the room.

“We can worry about hunting them down later. The reinforcements are already here, and since I’m speaking freely, there’s a slim chance of getting out alive, but if we have to fight our way out… THEN SO BE IT.”
