The Palace Beast

Chapter 6 - Getting Through

"My princess!" the captain called out, running toward her. He looked terrified as well, and so were the rest of the knights with him. Seizing the princess by the arm, he dragged her back to her cart. "We need to turn and head back to Maxis,

now!"

"I am not going anywhere without getting to my destination."

She pulled away from the captain. All she was thinking about was the Crown Prince and his sweet lips. She was not ready to turn back halfway, even though she looked more terrified than the rest.

"You know I can't do that," the captain declined. "The king will hang me."

"Perhaps, but I am not going back." She pushed the captain away and started running toward the direction of the bridge.

"After her!" the captain ordered the knights who were meant to guard her cart carriage.

Maiden June watched in silence as the knights ran after Princess Bonnie. This isn't what they signed up for. They have all defiled the King's decree by venturing on an unsafe journey with the princess. It wasn't their fault, though. The princess threatened to relieve them of their duties if they failed to accompany her to the Saxon village to meet with the Crown Prince of Wex.

The rest of the knights have abandoned the bridge. They are all mounted on their horses and ready to head back to Maxis at the captain's order. When they first heard the pitched howl, the captain ordered them all to return to their horses and wait for his last order. Seeing the princess run past them got them confused.

"Let go of me!" the princess cried out as she squirmed continuously. Even in the face of death, she's so desperate to meet with the Crown Prince of Wex to celebrate her 23rd birthday together in his arms.

She squirmed and squirmed, wanting to break free from the knight that seized her from behind, but he was too powerful for her.

"Forgive me, my princess, but the captain is right. We need to head back to Maxis while we still have the sun to guide our path."

He lifted the princess and placed her on his shoulder. She continued to squirm.

The pitch howl is getting closer each minute.

The captain hastily held the door of the princess' cart for the knight, as the knight lowered her into the cart. At the captain's order, he locked the door from the outside.

"Go! Go! Go!" the captain made a quick hand gesture at the rider of the cart carriage. He too ran back to his horse and humps on.

"Stop this cart now!" the Princess screamed in frustration. She kicked and kicked for the door to open, but she wasn't strong enough to kick open a cart carriage door locked from the outside.

Her maiden tried to stop her, but she pushed her away and continued with her kicking. She seems frustrated already. It was meant to be a quiet and smooth journey down to Saxon village. Her plans to see the Crown Prince of Wex have been ruined.

As they galloped along the rocky road, it became clear that the creatures after them might be close to their trail. They never stopped riding as fast as they could to get away from the creatures.

At the captain's command, the Knights unsheathed their steel swords as they continued to ride. The Princess' cart carriage trailed off the rocky road and continued in a snaking path guided by shrubs as the knights followed the cue.

Princess Bonnie was bursting with curiosity and couldn't contain her thoughts. She needed to see for herself what they were up against. She peered through the window. "Oh, no!" she gags automatically. "They are right after us." When she peered through the window, her gaze was drawn to two furious, hairy beastly creatures running after them at a terrifying speed. Their fangs glistened in the reflection of the sunset, and their eyes glowed red.

"We will all die," the Princess muttered in a frightened voice. She had not seen the hairy beastly creatures before, but only with her ears had she heard about the beastly creatures.

Maiden June took hold of the Princess' hand to comfort her. "We will survive this." She was also terrified and wasn't sure of the outcome of the situation they had gotten themselves into. Her voice was unstable and betrayed her false courage. "I am sorry I pulled you into this." The princess' eyes blurred with tears.

Maiden June couldn't respond. She tried to speak but was choked with tears. The fear of dying has its grip on her. It was as if invisible fingers were already running down her spine.

The first hairy beastly creature was already closing in on the Knight behind. Its speed could be compared to the speed of the fastest horse. Propelling itself into the air and then making a rough landing on the horse's back, forcing the horse to crash, and with its claws, the beast grips the knight.

A bloodcurdling scream escaped the lips of the knight. It was too late for him. None of his comrades could help him as the beastly creature sank its fangs into him, aiming for his stomach.

The Princess's heart raced, wanting to jump off her chest. Her worst nightmare had become a glimpse of reality. "Oh, no!" her eyes lit with fear. She folded her arms across her chest, trembling. Beads of sweat streamed down her soft cheeks.

The second beastly creature locked into his target and made a quick pounce, sinking its fangs into the fragile skin of a knight.

The captain glanced over his shoulders. "We are losing men!" he cried out.

For a moment, the beastly creature came to a halt and howled continuously. It looks like they have given up on their targets, but they have not. They are just alerting their pack some meters ahead.

Out of treacherous sharp bend emerge half a dozen beastly creatures. They emit a sharp howl and then ran the princess' cart off the glassy road.

Princess Bonnie's eyes gleamed with horror. Her bones rattled, and her muscles screamed with the horror that had overtaken her. She felt fear in the hair on the back of her neck as she continued to drift in and out of consciousness. "My Princess!"

"Princess..."

"Princess... Bonnie..."

The words of Maiden June to keep her awake were hard for the Princess to hear. It sounded empty and fading away with horror.

Maiden June couldn't help but let out a sudden terrifying scream when the cart carriage door was ripped open from the outside. The beastly creatures have them surrounded. There's no getting away from this n
