Chapter 199 Awkward Breakfast
Thinking back to what Daniel had said, the vibe got super awkward for a moment, and Emily felt a bit embarrassed. Just as she was about to say something, Michael came down from upstairs.
Emily was surprised to see Michael, especially since she hadn't noticed his sports car outside earlier.
According to Bryan, it seemed like this guy got wasted last night and was brought back to the Smith Mansion.
Did he not want to step into Emerald Lake Manor anymore?
Or maybe he went back to the Smith Mansion to clear things up with Mason about him and Sophia.
Anyway, things were different now.
Emily quickly looked away and stared at the food in her bowl, lost in thought.
Veda saw Michael wobbling down and noticed the awkward atmosphere, so she quickly said to him, "Why did you come down so fast? Did you drink the hangover soup? If you keep drinking like this, I won't care about you anymore!" Seeing Michael sit down without responding, just glancing at Emily and then quickly looking away, not daring to look directly at Mason, Veda tried to lighten the mood. "Michael, what's bothering you so much that you went out drinking? If something's wrong, why not tell me? If I can't solve it, Emily surely can!"
The atmosphere got awkward again.
Seeing Mason's face turn grim, Emily pursed her lips, intending to say something, but then heard Michael, sitting opposite her, speak in a harsh tone. "You can't solve it."
Then he paused, his voice gradually lowering. "She can't solve it either."
Hearing this, Emily's eyelids trembled, and she couldn't help but let out a cold laugh.
She really couldn't solve it. Sophia was pregnant, and that child would be the rightful heir of the Smith family. As for her, she was nothing but a joke a joke that would be cast out of the Smith family, forced to leave with her child and go far away.
After a while, Lexine brought the dishes to the table, and one of them was Ceviche.
It was the chef's specialty and Emily's favorite dish since she got pregnant.
Sure enough, as soon as the Ceviche was on the table, she stared at it without blinking and couldn't help but swallow.
Mason said, "Come on, let's eat."
Mason spoke very little today, mostly just eating quietly and occasionally listening to Veda's chatter, with Emily responding once or twice.
Michael only picked at the Ceviche, finding the rest increasingly unappetizing.
Veda suddenly said, "No wonder you two have lived together for so many years; even your tastes are so similar! You both love Ceviche so much! Michael, how about we switch seats? You can sit over here, and both of you can easily reach it instead of being so far apart."
"Veda, if you don't speak, no one will think you're mute." Before Veda could finish, Michael interrupted her. His interruption made the atmosphere even more tense.
Veda meant well, but her actions unintentionally added pressure to both Emily and Michael.
Since they were on the verge of divorce, sitting together and pretending nothing happened, playing the loving couple, seemed pointless.
Finally, Mason spoke, "Veda, you can leave now. Order whatever you want for takeout, my treat. I have something to discuss with Michael and Emily." Seeing this, Veda didn't stick around. She didn't ask for anything and obediently left.
Emily and Michael stopped eating.
As Mason put down his fork, their faces grew more tense.
Mason said, "I heard you two are getting a divorce? Didn't you say before that you were going to hold off for the sake of the Smith Corporation? What, now that the public opinion has passed, you can't wait to bring it up again? You've dealt with the reporters and media in Emerald City, do you really not know their intentions?"
Seeing the two remain silent, Mason became furious, his eyes bloodshot, but he was powerless.
Mason added, "Of course, Michael, if Emily wants to leave you, I won't stop her. After all these years, you owe her so much, and if you can't give her love, it's better to let her go and live the life she wants. But let me say one more thing today, divorce is a matter of feelings, are you sure there's no love between you two?"
The last sentence struck a chord in Emily's heart.
She couldn't lie; she did have feelings for Michael.
Not only that, she was carrying his child, nurturing it carefully until today.
As for Michael, he was troubled and couldn't give a definite answer to Mason's question. As for Emily, he had an indescribable reluctance to let her go.
But when it came to Sophia, it was love and responsibility.
"Grandpa, Michael and I, we both..." Emily was about to explain, but Michael interrupted again. "Grandpa, Sophia and I have reconciled."
He felt that he had to explain this himself, as a responsible man should admit his actions.
Emily's spoon fell to the ground.
Even though she already knew, hearing Michael say it out loud was unbearable, and she felt a deep sadness.
Mason was also shocked.
He was asking about the couple, so why did that damn Sophia come up again?
"Sophia? Emily's sister? Michael! What mistake have you made again? I knew it was you, you useless fool, always messing things up!"
Saying this, Mason slammed his cane on the table, startling everyone present.
Emily and Benjamin quickly stepped forward to stop Mason.
Michael just sat motionless in his chair, as if resigned, waiting for Mason to reprimand him.
There was no choice; Sophia was carrying his child.
Michael said, "Grandpa, I didn't do anything wrong. I'm telling you now, we're not kids anymore, we have our own choices. Why do you always force us?"
He continued, "As for the reporters or shareholders, I can handle it myself if something goes wrong. It's my responsibility as the president of Smith Corporation, I don't need anyone's help. Besides, you always scold me without understanding the situation, have you ever considered my feelings?"
"Fuck!" Mason didn't even think before retorting. "Now you remember you're the president of Smith Corporation!"
"Who was the one clinging to Emily, asking her to help you through the public opinion mess? You have your choices, and you can handle it if something goes wrong?"
"Michael, bullying your wife doesn't make you a hero. If you're really capable, find out the mastermind behind the rumors and the kidnapping of your sister!"
