Chapter 259 A Small Accident
Charles stood up and poured himself a glass of wine. The liquid glided into the smooth vessel, settling into a thick, dark red pool. He brought the glass to his lips and took a slow sip. "I don't know who it belongs to. It was from Nancy. I asked her, but she didn't tell me anything. She's so adamant in keeping it from me, but I have a feeling it has something to do with the hospital. As a shareholder, I have to get to the bottom of things."
"Mr. Fu, why don't you just leave it to Hobart?" Hiram suggested. Then he added, "If he can't handle it, you could always step in."
Charles considered this for a moment and saw sense in what he said. "You are right."
Then, his eyes went to the notebook in Hiram's hand. "What about this?" he asked.
"I'll make a copy and give it to Hobart. It would be best if you return it to Nancy as soon as possible. I'm sure she has her reasons for not telling you." Hiram treaded on his words cautiously.
"If that's the case, then get on with it," Charles said.
"Yes, sir."
With that, Hiram quickly made a copy of the notebook and handed it back to Charles.
Hiram was right. The sooner Charles returned the notebook, the better. He absolutely didn't want Nancy to find out that he had taken it, so he got off work early in the afternoon and went to the kindergarten to take the children home.
Meanwhile, Nancy only had a minor operation scheduled in the afternoon. It was one of those rare days when she would be able to got off work on time.
On her way back, it suddenly hit her that she had left the notebook that Erin gave her at home.
Her nerves started fill with an anxious edge. She hoped that Charles wouldn't find it.
That notebook was the only thing on Nancy's mind the whole drive back, and as soon as she arrived home, she ran into the bedroom in with frantic steps.
It was there-right where she left it on the cabinet
At the sight of it, she let out a breath. Its contents were safe. Nancy hid the notebook, mulling over things. It was a complicated. She needed to think about it some more before telling Charles. Hobart turned furious when he received the message from Hiram.
He printed a copy, grabbed his clothes and was about to head straight to the hospital.
His angry steps were halted with a knock on the door.
Quickly, he strode towards it and flung it open. David was standing outside.
Hobart was surprised, but he greeted him politely, "Mr. Wang, to what so I owe this pleasure? Come on in."
David was a distinguished figure within the business circle. He did not mingle with just anyone.
"President Hobart. Thank you for taking care of Anna in the hospital," David said as he sat down on the sofa.
Hobart hurriedly asked his wife to prepare tea for their esteemed guest. "You're welcome, Mr. Wang. What brings you here today? Is there anything I can I do for you?"
A person of his standing would not be paying someone like him a visit unless they had a very specific purpose.
"Anna has always been following Jessie. Jessie is getting on in years, and she has become a little irritable, and her language is quite harsh as well. Anna thinks that the years she had spent studying abroad meant that her own professional ability is similar to that of Jessie, so I am here now..." David paused thoughtfully for a while and continued, "As you may know, my wife passed away early. It was not easy for me to raise Anna and play the role of both father and mother to her all these years. It may be because of my own shortcoming as her parent, but my daughter has grown to be quite proud. Despite this, I believe that her capability measures up to standard. What do you think, President Hobart?"
Hobart was not stupid. He didn't need to think hard to understand the real meaning behind David's words. The thought of his daughter being only an ordinary doctor did not please him.
Among the shareholders, Charles had the most influence. Apart from him, there were only a few minor investors, David being one of them.
In the grand scheme of things, Hobart was merely a trivial figure. The final decisions were always at the hands of the shareholders, especially Charles.
"Mr. Wang, what do you mean?" He asked tentatively, "Are you proposing that Anna be the vice director?"
A shadow crossed David's face at his question.
Hobart continued, "She has only been at the hospital for a short time. If she takes an important position so soon, it will only create resentment among the others who have been there far longer than her. Her credibility will always be in question, and she would have no respect from her colleagues."
In truth, Hobart did not think Anna was suited to be the vice director at all, but of course, it was not something he could say out loud, so he chose his words carefully.
David's face darkened even further.
"But Nancy managed the Second Pediatric Department not long after she came back. President Hobart, my daughter also specializes in pediatrics. She went to a prestigious medical school, so there is no question of her knowledge or training. If Nancy was able to do it, I don't see any reason why Anna can't," he said.
"Nancy has contributed to a lot of international journals and publications. She is a widely-recognized pediatric expert, but Anna..." Hobart argued helplessly.
The truth was that David knew that there was still a huge gap between Anna and Nancy. It was something that even he could not deny. His tone softened his tone as he said, "President Hobart, I am not asking for Anna to take Nancy's place. I just want her to have a place in the department. Even if her she is not yet as good as Nancy, she is still better than Jessie, isn't she?"
As he spoke, his eyes fell on the paper on the table. "President Hobart, what is this?" he asked, momentarily distracted.
"Oh, this is nothing," Hobart said as he reached for the paper, but David stopped him, his eyes raking on the information on the sheet.
"Well, I am a shareholder of the hospital. What are these figures? Are these regarding finances?" David took the paper from Hobart's and scanned it more thoroughly. "I heard from Anna that Jessie is very greedy. So is this..."
"Ah, Mr. Fu gave it to me." Hobart knew that he could no longer hide it, so he told the truth.
"Mr. Fu gave this to you?"
Hobart nodded grimly. "Yes. A doctor from the hospital was found to be extorting money from the patient's families. I was about to check it, when you came." His shoulders dropped as he continued, "I always, always emphasize that we as doctors should be above all ethical and put patients first, but these people..." Hobart shook his head sadly.
"You said it was Mr. Fu who gave it to you? Then it must be from Nancy. She was the one in charge of pediatrics. Among the doctors in that department, Jessie is the one who has the position to ask for money right?" David commented. "Oh, but that is only my own speculation. I guess you'll have to find the result for yourself."
"Jessie?" Hobart pondered over his words for a while and said, "It is possible. I will investigate it first."
This day came as a great surprise for David. He just might get what he came for.
He stood up and said, "Okay, I won't keep you from your work any longer. Goodbye!"
Hobart saw him out and set to work.
Nancy had no idea of all this.
The next day, whispers and pointed glances greeted her as she made her way to her office.
The moment she stepped in the Second Pediatric Department, Erin was in front of her, looking frantic and pale.
"Nancy, we have a problem!"
"What's the matter?" Nancy asked with a smile, attempting to calm her down.
"Jessie has been suspended and is under investigation. Anna will be temporarily replacing her position as director. Jessie... she won't be able to come back until after everything has been solved." Erin looked around and went closer to Nancy. "That notebook..." she whispered.
"No, I have it!" Nancy answered in disbelief.
As soon as she finished her words, she heard a shout from the outside. "Director Nancy, President Hobart asked to see you in the meeting room!"
"Alright," Nancy replied calmly, even as her heart was pounding in her chest.
She went to the meeting room and found Anna and Jessie there.
Jessie was pale and dejected, her head hanging low as her eyes were fixed on the floor.
