Chapter 246 My Duty To Serve You
The meeting just ended, and everyone left the room. Nancy and Charles were the only ones left in his office.
The shareholders always gave Charles a hard time. Nancy could not help but worry about him.
How he handled the situation surprised her. The meeting was smooth and easy. Charles didn't say much, but every word he spoke was firm and irrefutable.
"The shareholders... Did they always do that on purpose? Deliberately make things difficult for you?" Nancy walked towards Charles and stood behind him. She lightly rubbed his shoulders with her uninjured arm. He seemed at ease, but he was probably stressed and tired.
He turned to face her, took her hand, and kissed it gently. "Earning more money is all they care about. All these years of huge profit and they still haven't realized why it's possible at all."
"That's not true. They know it; at the end of the day, they still follow your lead," said Nancy softly. She looked at him intently with her honest eyes.
"I like it when you flatter me. It's not like you." Charles let out a chuckle.
"Don't read too much into it!" Changing the topic, Nancy asked, "By the way, what kind of video do you want to make? How do you want it to turn out?" "I want a video of the kids with you and me!" "Can this mitigate the negative impact?"
"You really wouldn't mind showing up in the video?" Charles answered with a question.
"If it would help control the damage, why wouldn't I be willing?"
"That's good to know. I'll come with you when you shop for the clothes that you were last time so people wouldn't think we're lying," Charles suggested.
"Alright. Sounds fine with me." Nancy nodded in agreement.
"Hey, you seem a little different today. Is something bothering you?" Charles stood up and hugged her gently.
"In what way?" She had no idea what he was talking about.
"Here." For a moment, Charles leaned back and pointed at her heart.
"It's the same as it had always been beating. How is it different now?" replied Nancy, pushing away his hand.
"Beating as it always had been, yes... beating for yourself and for children. But now it's beating for one more person, too," Charles said with a warm yet playful smile on his face.
He wasn't always like this. In the past, he never really understood what it meant to fall in love. He could have what he wanted-that was his mindset, at least.
Others didn't even have the right to refuse.
It had always been that way until he met Nancy and got to be with her day in and day out. To his surprise, there was so much more to life than he always imagined. Life didn't need to be extravagant. It could be plain and simple yet so fulfilling.
He used to be the overbearing and bossy Charles whom one wouldn't imagine living a typical and ordinary life.
"How sentimental! You're fooling around with me," Nancy teased and complained.
"Oh, c'mon! I know you like it when I'm being sentimental." Charles wrapped his arms around Nancy and kissed her on the cheek. "Attend a meeting with me!
"You seriously want me to go with you?" "He must be kidding,' Nancy thought to herself and looked at him in disbelief.
"I just want the whole world to know that you, Nancy, are my beloved. Is there anything wrong with that?" Charles ran his hand through Nancy's hair, asking and convincing her to join him.
"Okay, okay! I'll go with you," answered Nancy who knew that she wouldn't be able to say 'no'.
"Great! Let's go." He held her hand as they walked out of the room.
Charles' secretary, stationed outside his office, was taken aback by the sight of her boss holding hands with a woman. Her eyes widened, unable to hide her surprise. 'Am I really seeing what I'm seeing? My boss, the most cold-hearted man in this city, is holding a woman's hand in public?
What is he up to?' she could not help but wonder.
'Could the relationship be for real? Would it last?'
Seeing the secretary's reaction, Nancy blushed. She lowered her head as she closely followed Charles' footsteps.
On the contrary, Charles brimmed with confidence. He walked briskly with a calm expression on his face.
His lips curled into a smile.
"Everyone, are you seeing what I'm seeing? Our CEO is actually smiling!"
"Yes, he is! Nancy is the woman who got entangled with our CEO on TV, isn't she?"
"It doesn't seem like it, but we can never really tell what's going through our CEO's mind!"
"That's true. But our CEO is nothing like Jay. The fact is, we don't know the truth; we know so little so we better not talk nonsense!" "Exactly!"
Still caught by surprise, everyone was gazing and talking about Charles and Nancy walking together. But the two paid no attention it.
Inside the meeting room, a group of senior executives was waiting for the meeting to finally begin.
Their moods shifted when Charles and Nancy entered the room hand in hand. Their eyes and the expressions on their faces could not hide their surprise. Suddenly, the room was quiet. "Why? What's so strange?" Charles asked plainly, breaking the silence.
"Nothing at all. With Mrs. Fu joining the meeting, this one's going to be smooth!" one of the executives joked.
"I like the sound of that!" Charles replied with a smile.
From then on, the atmosphere became fun and lively.
"Truly, Mrs. Fu, you are so beautiful!"
"Yes, Mrs. Fu. I even heard that you are a famous pediatrician. Maybe I could come by your hospital department some time; my child has been complaining about a toothache recently." "Mrs. Fu is an orthopedics doctor, not a dentist." "You are so ignorant. Didn't you know that Mrs. Fu is so talented she can do just about anything?"
Everyone liked Nancy. They all wanted to strike a conversation with her. The atmosphere was as lively as it could get.
People were talking to Nancy simultaneously. She couldn't respond to each and every one of them, so she just laughed and smiled.
"Alright," Charles interrupted the chatter, "you can all have your toothaches and headaches checked by Nancy at the hospital some other time. For now, let's have our meeting." Charles pulled a chair and motioned for Nancy to sit beside him.
Nancy had attended numerous meetings, but this one was different. She felt nervous and uncomfortable, almost embarrassed. She knew exactly why: Charles was in this one.
"One cup of black coffee for my honey, please!" Charles called on the secretary.
"Yes, I'll bring it right over, Mr. Fu!" the secretary courteously replied. She immediately poured a cup of coffee for Nancy.
The senior executives couldn't help but notice and react to what they were witnessing. Charles appeared to genuinely care about her.
Hadn't he always been indifferent to women? Moreover, he had a domineering personality contrary to what he was displaying.
How could it be?
Did this mean that the old Mr. Fu was now history?
Or maybe he just hadn't found the right woman-his match-before?
In any case, Nancy was heaven-sent! Perhaps God appointed her to deal with the tough Mr. Fu!
Nancy felt a tinge of embarrassment from all the care and attention that Charles was giving her, but deep down her heart was filled with joy.
To be spoiled by a man was probably every woman's guilty pleasure. Nancy was a strong woman, she knew she is. But feeling her heart flustering the way it did, she felt like a little girl.
Shocked and partially disturbed by her realization, Nancy sipped on her cup of coffee to keep herself composed.
The coffee was still a little hot, causing her to frown and fidget.
Her reaction didn't go unnoticed. "Be careful. Don't get yourself burned!" Charles uttered softly in a low voice. He grabbed her cup and gently stirred the coffee with a small spoon, all the while engaged in the meeting.
"Let me do it myself. You have to focus on your meeting," Nancy whispered, insisting.
Charles didn't respond to Nancy and kept on stirring her coffee. "The secretary will give you a copy of the documents for your review. Please go over it a few times then let us know of your comments and suggestions."
"Alright, Mr. Fu!" Just in time, the secretary came in with all the documents and provided a set for each executive.
They picked up the documents and started going through the pages with a serious face.
For a while, the room was quiet. Only the sounds of flipping pages and the spoon inside the porcelain cup held by Charles could be heard.
The slight mix of sounds was actually calming and pleasant to the ears.
When the coffee was no longer too hot but not yet cold, Charles handed over the cup back to Nancy.
She took the cup and said in a shy but appreciative tone, "Thank you."
Charles flashed a charming smile and said something that caught everyone's attention, "It's my duty to serve you, Nancy, my dear woman."
"Wow..." Everyone was in awe and couldn't believe what they just heard.
Mr. Fu, the company CEO, always served by his secretary, by everyone, now was the one serving?
Was this really the arrogant and moody Mr. Fu speaking?
If they didn't witness it with their own eyes nor heard with their own ears, they never would have believed it.
