David continued, "Right now, it seems like you want a divorce more than I do. Caroline, how could I possibly let you get what you want?"
She couldn't take it anymore. Without thinking, she lunged forward and bit his shoulder.
This man is absolutely infuriating!
She was furious-beyond furious!
But David didn't react. He didn't cry out, didn't push her away.
After all, Harper was watching.
The dining room fell into silence.
Caroline realized that biting David changed nothing. Worse, to outsiders, it probably looked like they were just flirting-like they were a loving couple teasing each other.
A sense of helplessness washed over her. She slowly let go, her heart sinking into despair.
If she couldn't get out of this marriage, she would never truly be free.
"I get it. I get it now..." Caroline murmured, more to herself than anyone else. "David, so this is what you meant by changing the rules of the game!"
He patted her head indulgently. "That's right. You finally understand."
Watching the two whisper to each other like this, Harper suddenly felt like an unnecessary third wheel. She stood up, tactfully excusing herself. "Alright, I should get going. When you two aren't busy, come visit me more often."
David and Caroline walked her out together.
And the whole time, David kept a firm grip on Caroline's hand, their fingers interlocked.
Only Caroline knew the truth-he wasn't holding her hand out of affection. He was restraining her.
Every time she tried to pull away, he would tighten his grip, making it impossible for her to escape.
To an outsider, they looked like the perfect couple, standing side by side, smiling at Harper, chatting about everyday things.
Harper waved goodbye and was about to get into the car when suddenly, a red sports car sped through the gates and came to a smooth stop near the garden.
"Mr. Ellison!"
Elizabeth stepped out, her voice syrupy sweet.
She didn't even notice Harper-her eyes were locked on David as she marched straight toward him, trying to wedge herself between him and Caroline.

Because... David wasn't about to let Caroline go-not when there was still a risk she might blurt out the truth to Harper.
If she ran over and spilled everything, that wouldn't be fun at all.
Caroline, on the other hand, wanted Elizabeth to push her aside. She even stepped back voluntarily, hoping to break free.
But just as she moved, David yanked her right back to his side.
His gaze turned cold as he looked at Elizabeth. "What do you want?"
"Mr. Ellison, I..."
Elizabeth hesitated, unsure of what to say.
She had come to check if Julia's plan had worked-to see if Caroline had been dealt with.
But from the looks of it... Caroline was completely fine! She was even standing next to David, holding hands with him, looking perfectly happy!
What the heck was going on?
Panicked, Elizabeth instinctively reached out to grab David's other hand.
But before she could touch him, a firm, authoritative voice rang out.
"And who are you? So rude and pushy-why are you clinging to David like that?"
Harper's voice carried a natural sense of authority. As David's mother, she usually carried herself with
dignity, though she never acted high and mighty in front of Caroline.
After all, Caroline was her daughter-in-law-she treated her like family.
But to outsiders? Harper was a completely different person.
She had presence. She had power.
Elizabeth turned to look at her, confused.
She didn't recognize who Harper was-after all, Harper had spent years at the orphanage and rarely appeared at Ellison family gatherings or public events.
