Chapter 223 Haven't You Played with Me Enough?

"My brain is fine, but... are you sure there's nothing wrong with yours?" Caroline asked, arching a brow. "I say so many things in a day. How the hell am I supposed to remember the very last thing I said?"

"It wasn't something you said. It was the last thing I said."

Caroline immediately shot back, "If I can't even remember what I said, do you really think I'd remember what you said?"

David's expression darkened even more.

"I'm not wrong, am I?" Caroline put down her spoon. "If you remember it so well, just repeat it to me now. Why are you forcing me to recall something I clearly don't remember?"

What's the point of this?

David let out a cold scoff. "I won't say it again. If you didn't hear it, then forget it."

Caroline shrugged. "Fine by me."

She didn't care what David had said. Besides, if he refused to say it again, what difference did it make whether she heard it or not?

But her indifference made David's face turn even darker, his mood plummeting into a stormy abyss.

With a sudden slam, he smacked his palm against the dining table. The bowls and spoons clattered, and some of the porridge spilled over.

Caroline blinked in surprise. "What are you getting all worked up for?"

Why is he acting so strange?

He narrowed his eyes. "Did you really not hear it, or are you just pretending?"

The car had been dead silent. Just the two of them.

How could she not have heard me?

And besides... she had only just closed her eyes back then. It wasn't possible for her to have fallen asleep so quickly.

Caroline let out a sigh. "What exactly did you say? I'm asking you just repeat it. Or at least give me a hint, okay? Maybe it'll come back to me. David, I'm exhausted-physically and mentally. Can you stop nitpicking over something so trivial?"

I just want to eat in peace. Is that really so much to ask?

David's lips pressed into a thin, rigid line.

So that's how she sees it. My confession. My quiet, careful admittance of love. To her, it was nothing. Something so trivial, so forgettable. An insignificant little sentence, completely unworthy of her attention. David suddenly realized... maybe he was out of his mind.

her. She must have put some kind of spell on me.

He abruptly stood up. "Caroline, don't expect to ever hear those words from me again."

"Oh, big deal."

She couldn't care less.

Caroline always had a way of infuriating David beyond belief while leaving him utterly powerless against her. Noticing that he was still standing beside her, eyes sharp as knives, she casually took a bite of her bun, chewing slowly.

"I'm someone who barely has the energy to survive. I don't have the time or interest to dwell on anything else. You can call me insensitive, unromantic, or clueless about love-I don't care. If you want to have fun, there are plenty of women out there willing to play whatever games you like."

"But if you really want to know the only thing you said last night that stuck with me, the only thing that's been echoing in my head ever since... It's when you told me that you were going to change the way you play with me. That's the only thing I remember."

Caroline let out another sigh.

"David, what are you even thinking? Haven't you played with me enough? What more do you want? How else are you planning to humiliate me?"

David raised a brow. "Humiliate?"

"Yes." She met his gaze directly. "Or torment, degrade, ruin... Take your pick."
