Chapter 33
Five
“Whose mind should I read next?” Eric asks as he rubs his hands together. We are sitting by the bar, and his red eyes are studying the people mingling all around us.
I roll my eyes at him. “This mind–reading ability has seriously gotten to your head.”
He grins. “Maybe, but can you blame me? I’m having a lot of fun with it.”
I just shake my head and grab the drinks menu, studying it from top to bottom. “Are any of these drinks tasty?”
“Try this one,” Eric taps at one of the pictures on the menu, still grinning. “It’s called the Five. Just like your name.”
I glance at the picture, my eyes lingering on the deep red liquid in the glass. “What’s in it?”
Eric shrugs. “I don’t know, but it looks good, right?”
I can’t argue with that. I signal the bartender and order us two Fives.
As we wait for our drinks, Eric spots a woman at the other end of the bar, her eyes scanning the room anxiously. “Her,” he says, pointing towards her. “I want to read her
mind.”
I follow his gaze but quickly look away when she catches me staring. “No, Eric. We are just here to have a good time. We are not going to invade people’s privacy.”
“Oh, come on, it will be fun!” Eric gives me a little pout that makes him look less menacing and more adorable. “Pretty please? We can spy on people’s lives and find out who is living their best life.”

“That sounds like fun, actually,” I admit and lean closer to my mate, smiling as I try to find the best person to spy on. When I see a man that looks stressed, I lean closer to Eric and whisper, “Read his mind. He looks like he is dying on the inside and hates the world.”
Eric chuckles. “Alright, alright… let me focus.”
Eric closes his eyes and takes a deep breath, his concentration so intense that I can almost see the energy crackling around him. After a few seconds, he opens his eyes and turns to me with a grin. “You were right. This guy is a mess.”
“What’s going on in his head?” I ask, taking a sip of my drink.
Eric leans in closer, his voice low and conspiratorial. “He’s getting ready to rob a bank.”
I nearly choke on my drink. “What? Are you serious?”
Eric nods. “Yeah. He has been planning it for weeks. He’s got a whole scheme worked out.”
I shake my head in disbelief. “This is insane. We have to do something.”
Eric raises an eyebrow. “Like what?”
“I don’t know,” I say, my mind racing. “Call the cops, maybe?”
Eric starts shaking as if trying not to laugh, and that’s when I realize he is messing with me
-the bastard.
I growl at Eric and push him in the shoulder. “You’re such a dick. Do you know how scared
I was?”
“Sorry,” Eric dries a tear from his eye with a smile still playing over his lips. “I saw an
opportunity to mess with you, and I took it.”
I sigh. “You’re acting more and more like Logan, you know, Since when did you become

“I’ve always been funny, but I had too many aggressive emotions locked up in my heart, you know? Mean father. Dead mother…yada yada.”
“Ah, and now that’s changed?”
“I actually feel happier now that I’m a hybrid,” he smiles. “The vampire genes and my newfound abilities are fun. Way more fun than being just a werewolf. Now I have the best
of both worlds. And, of course, I have the best mate in the world as well,” he places a hand
over mine. “Shall we look into the mind of another person?”
I blush at how cute he is being and smile. “Alright, let’s see…how about you look inside
the head of…” I look around the bar with searching eyes. “How about that blonde over there?” I point out a girl with short, straight hair. She is sitting by herself on a couch,
drinking fruity cocktails out of a glass with a tiny umbrella in it. She is wearing a red dress and high heels and looks about my age.
“Yes,” Eric says, his eyes twinkling with mischief. “I would like to do that…I just need to get
closer.”
He stands up and walks over to her, sitting down by her side on the couch. I watch as he starts chatting with her, and a small smile forms on my lips. Eric is so good at this. He doesn’t even need to touch her to read her mind. I can see that his magic is working, and soon, he returns to me with a puzzled look on his face.
“So umm…I think we have found Emily’s murderer,” he looks back at the girl. “Her boyfriend is a newly turned vampire, and I believe he was the one who killed our pack member.”
“Really?” I ask, absently looking at the girl. She looks like a normal human girl, but she could boyfriend could indeed be a vampire. “How do you know?”

“I asked her what mysterious secrets she might be sheltering, and her mind immediately went to thinking about her murderous boyfriend. He has been acting strange lately, and I saw this scene of her trying to lock him up in their bathroom. But he broke the chains she had on him and went on a rampage. He murdered a girl, and his girlfriend saw the body. It wasn’t an accident, though. Her boyfriend enjoyed doing it. He enjoyed drinking her dry. Eating her.”
“Sweet Jesus…” I whisper.
“Agreed,” Eric says, his expression solemn and serious. “So that girl over there is terrified of what her boyfriend has become.”
“Well, that’s how it usually goes,” I say quietly. “I know it must be hard for her. Discovering that your boyfriend is a changed man isn’t easy, but it’s wrong of her to keep it a secret
that he murdered someone.”
“Really?” Eric questions. “Because if you murdered someone, Princess, I would pretend it never happened in order to protect you. I rather watch the world burn than turn you in.”
I stare at him, my heart pounding fast in my chest. What he is saying is crazy but also very romantic. Does he really mean it? He couldn’t, right?
“Do you mean that?”
He smirks. “What do you think?”
My eyes stayed glued on his face for a while longer until I notice the girl is leaving. “Umm…the girl is leaving the bar.”
Eric stands up from his chair. “Let’s follow her. Chances are that she will take us straight to her murderous boyfriend.”
