Chapter 42

Charlie said lightly, “He’d been waiting for you. Why are you so late?”

“Oh, filming delayed me a little bit.”

Kamryn put her bag down on the sofa and stared at it for a while.

Seeing Kamryn staring at her bag, Charlie asked confusedly, “Why do you keep staring at it?”

“If I don’t deserve it, I’ll be in for a disaster.”

Kamryn didn’t think she was worthy of a $1 million bag.

All she knew was that it was a Hermes bag. She had thought a Hermes bag would cost a few thousand dollars at most, but she didn’t expect it to be a limited edition bag that would attract other’s attention.

Charlie did not understand what Kamryn meant for a moment.

“What do you mean?”

“This bag is too good for me.”

Charlie was particularly keen. Sensing Kamryn’s dejection, he realized that she must have suffered.

“Who bullied you?”

There was a trace of inexplicable anger in Charlie’s deep voice.

Kamryn waved her hand. “Nothing. Never mind.”

Kamryn didn’t want to talk to Charlie about those negative things.

Eugene could also discern Kamryn’s weariness and disappointment as if he could empathize with how she felt. Suddenly, he pulled her out onto the balcony.

The room was a large presidential suite with two balconies. The balcony facing the living room was a large, circular open–air balcony decorated with flowers, perfect for a romantic candlelit dinner.

In fact, there was really a candlelight dinner waiting for Kamryn.

Kamryn saw two candles and some exquisite desserts on the small glass table.

She could see that the candles had been burning for some time because they were nearly half burned.

“A candlelight dinner?”

Kamryn was somewhat surprised.

Eugene took her hand, led her to her seat, and motioned for her to sit down.

He had the very grace of a gentleman.

Kamryn felt so surprised. She sat down, and just as Eugene was about to sit across from her, Charlie suddenly appeared behind him, lifted him to the side with one hand, and sat across from Kamryn with ease.

Eugene’s cheeks puffed out when he saw that his seat had been taken. He crossed his arms in a defiant manner as if warning Charlie to leave his

seat.

‘Good boy, sit here.”

Charlie patted the small chair beside him and added, “This is where you sit.”

Eugene turned his head reluctantly.

Seeing that, Kamryn didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. She couldn’t get Charlie and Eugene to switch

to her and said to Eugene, “Is that okay with you?”

Eugene was a little reluctant at first, but he sat down to listen to Kamryn’s words.

Charlie rang the bell. After a while, a waiter swiped his card and walked in. He first removed the burning candles, replaced them with new ones, and

lit them.

The pink candles went perfectly well with the gilded candle holder.

The waiter bowed, stepped aside with a smile, and said softly, “Have a wonderful dinner.”

Kamryn stole a glance at Charlie and asked in a low voice, “Did you prepare this?”

Eugene looked at Charlie.

Charlie calmly wiped his hands with a wet towel and explained lightly, “This is a special service for the suite.”

Of course, he wouldn’t admit that he had specially prepared it.

Kamryn had never had such a formal candlelit dinner. She first wiped her hands with a wet towel like Charlie, then wiped Eugene’s hands clean, and finally picked up her knife and fork. Her stomach rumbled when she saw the fine dessert.

*Grr…”

Kamryn clutched her stomach and looked around awkwardly. “My stomach is gurgling! I hope it doesn’t spoil the fun!” she thought.

Eugene covered his mouth and giggled. The waiter pretended not to hear the noise and looked straight ahead. When he saw Kamryn peeping at him, he smiled politely at her.

Next to Kamryn was a rose–flavored truffle, a famous French dessert. She took a bite, and the sweetness seemed to flow straight to the bottom of her heart through her taste buds.

“It’s so good…

“I’ve never tasted anything so good in my life,” Kamryn thought.

As a matter of fact, she was born into a decent family, but she had been living in poverty as a student since her mother passed away.

Jenna got a few thousand dollars as pocket money each term, while Kamryn only got a few hundred.

Back then, Bruno told Kamryn that his company was not doing well, that the family expenses were high, and that the few hundred dollars he had given her had been set aside specifically from family expenses.

Kamryn was deeply moved and ashamed at that time. She was very frugal with her money, and she could save more than half of her pocket money each term. She didn’t know until she graduated from college that Jenna’s pocket money was ten times as much as hers.

It was not only in this respect that they were treated differently.

Bruno had to attend many dinners because of his business, but he never took Kamryn with him. Instead, he took Jenna with him.

Besides, Bruno was always happy to spend a lot of money on Jenna’s clothes or her music lessons.

Kamryn resembled her mother in character. She was never in the mood for competition. However, her stepmother and her daughter used it against her to force her out of the house eventually.

“Jenna must have enjoyed a lot of candlelit dinners like this,” Kamryn wondered.

She still remembered the time when she was kicked out of her family. She worked hard only to make ends meet. Occasionally, she would use her phone to check out Jenna’s daily life on Twitter. Jenna posted pictures of either beautiful beaches or upscale resort hotels.

When Charlie saw Kamryn staring at the dessert beside her hand blankly, he slightly raised an eyebrow. “What’s wrong?”

“I forgot to take a picture of such a delicious dessert.”

Kamryn smiled at Charlie and continued, “Thank you for this lovely candlelit dinner!”

Charlie’s heart skipped a beat. The way Kamryn smiled at him made him want to give her all the best things in the world.

Such dinners were commonplace to Charlie, and he was tired of them.

He had no idea that Kamryn would be so moved.

“You like it?”

“Yes.”

Charlie immediately handed Kamryn the rose–flavored truffle he hadn’t eaten yet, and Eugene did the same.

Kamryn looked at the two extra desserts and asked surprised, “Aren’t you gonna eat it?”
