Chapter 333
Brook was over there, struggling and mumbling like he was trying to speak but couldn't get the words out. It left everyone scratching their heads, wondering what he was trying to say.
Noticing Selena's silence, Old Man Wang strode over to Brook and kicked the chair, sending it toppling over and Brook with it. He crouched down, grabbed Brook's hand, and pulled out a dagger from his belt, hovering it dangerously over Brook's fingers. His grin was downright wicked. "Ten billion. I'll give you some time to pull it together. But if you don't, I'll chop off one of his fingers every hour. A gambler like him? He's not worth keeping alive anyway. Hahaha!"
"And don't even think about calling the cops. Unless you want to find your uncle's body when they show up..."
With a click, the call ended.
Selena frantically tried to call back, but nobody picked up. Even from that short call, her keen journalist instincts told her these folks were seasoned pros. They were... outlaws!
It hit her hard-if she didn't play along, they'd really start cutting off her uncle's fingers!
Time was ticking, and she couldn't afford to sit and plan. She needed to gather the money fast and get him back safely.
But ten billion...
Where on earth was she going to find that kind of cash?
Grandpa?
No way, he was fading in and out of consciousness, and the hospital had already issued two critical notices. Dr. Campbell was practically living at the hospital, on call every second. Everett?
Yes, he was the only one who could possibly get that amount of money together quickly.
Selena immediately dialed Everett's number, but all she got was: The number you have dialed is turned off...
She'd forgotten he wouldn't answer her calls.
But she couldn't let their past drama get in the way. Her uncle's life was on the line!
Selena rushed out of the hospital and flagged down a taxi, urging the driver to race to Bennett Corporation. The car zipped through traffic, picking up speed.
Ava hadn't seen her return and called her. Selena quickly laid out the situation and told her to head home. Ava could only say, "Please be careful, ma'am, and try not to rush."
The taxi pulled up at Bennett Corporation.
Selena
her and usually let heret
daily, so the security guards
os no caned to bring meals here
a hitch.
But today, they stopped her.
Selena was confused, "Don't you recognize me?"
The two guards exchanged awkward glances.
One of them explained, "Mrs. Bennett, it's not that we don't recognize you, but Mr. Everett ordered us not to let you in. We're really sorry..."
She wasn't allowed in.
Selena felt a wave of disbelief wash over her.
She had already stepped aside for him and Margot. What else did he want from her?
Did he really despise her that much, hate the child, and never want to see them again?
Her grip tightened, nails biting into her palms, but she felt no pain.
She didn't force her way in, mindful of her child.
But she didn't leave either. She pulled out her phone and called Derick, who picked up immediately. "Ma'am, how can I help you?"
Selena felt a small sense of relief.
She didn't mince words, clearly
laying out the urgency of the
vel
situation and asking him to pass on the message.
She swallowed her pride and pleaded, "Please, ask him to meet with me!"
Derick, understanding the gravity, rushed straight into the office.
Behind his massive desk, Everett sat bathed in morning light, his features almost godlike.
He lifted his eyes, giving Derick a frosty glare, clearly annoyed by the interruption.
Derick's heart skipped a beat, but knowing how urgent it was, he blurted out.
"Mr. Everett, there's trouble. Madam, she..."
