Chapter 61
Lily's feelings for Xavier died just when they had reached their peak.
The divorce had come so suddenly that her heart had instantly been shattered to pieces, but her feelings for Xavier couldn't be withdrawn so quickly.
She could only assure herself that experience was the best teacher she had, and that after this, there would be no next time.
"Are you underestimating me? I've had at least five... two boyfriends, you know," Maryanne retorted, feeling somewhat diffident when it came to relationships.
She had once envied how Lily's eyes would sparkle when she talked about Xavier, and she also wanted to find a man who would make her look like that. She eventually dated two men, but both relationships ended because of various reasons.
After breaking up, Maryanne felt more relief than sadness. Her feelings for her exes barely counted as love; she merely fancied them.
Hugging her legs, Lily curled up on the couch. She couldn't detach herself from the bad mood caused by
y being deceived by Xavier. Maryanne couldn't bring herself to reprimand her anymore. "Just think of it as getting bitten by a dog. It's not the first time, after all." That was what Lily thought when she was coerced to go back to him last time. It helped to ease the pain in her heart.
"Eat something." Maryanne handed her the breakfast she bought. "You still have to work. Don't wear yourself out..."
Lily took the breakfast and forced herself to wolf it down. Along with the food, she swallowed down her bitterness and complicated feelings.
In fact, the anxiety over the unfinished materials from last night also plagued her. She had no idea how Nadia would make things difficult for her.
Xavier naturally woke up at 6:30 am. Even though he was tired from the night before, he still woke up on time.
Lily, who he had been holding in his arms, was gone. The messy bed was empty except for him.
He had a feeling that Lily had left.
She wouldn't be downstairs preparing a hearty breakfast for him like usual. She wouldn't urge him to come down and eat. Xavier grabbed his phone from the bedside table and dealt with a few urgent work matters. Then, he sank into thought.
A sense of uneasiness prickled at him. Something about what happened between them last night didn't sit right.
But it was Timothy who lied, and Lily had dressed like that because she wanted to seduce him.
Why should he feel guilty?
With that thought, Xavier felt more at ease. The frustration in his eyes cleared.
Lily, who ran off this morning, was just as ungrateful as always.
Scoffing inwardly, Xavier got up and put on his suit. Timothy had just arrived to pick him up when he went downstairs.
Seeing him come out, Timothy quickly got out of the car and opened the door for him.
Xavier crossed his legs once he got in the car, and picked up his iPad to skim through his schedule.
"Mr. Fulton, the police have news," Timothy said, revving the engine as he continued. "It turns out that the culprit responsible for Mrs. Fulton's car accident is part of the victim's family in Hayden's case." Whether they intended to frighten Lily or murder her remained unknown.
The police had just found concrete evidence this morning and informed Timothy. They were planning to make an arrest. Only after the person was caught and interrogated would they know the truth.
"How's Mr. Hammock doing with the investigation?" Xavier glanced at him. His voice was cold.
Timothy had been in contact with Sylvester. "He's still looking for the final piece of evidence."
Xavier frowned. "Tell him to hurry up."
Lily would only return to him once Hayden's case was resolved. The inconsistency in their relationship was affecting him, which in turn, affected his work.
