Finding Them

Chapter 20

It was now Friday and everyone had the day off to welcome the grandparents. Daniel was nervous about how the twins would react to the new people, especially his mum. He had spoken with his dad several times and tried to explain she would need to tone down her behaviour otherwise the twins would react badly but his dad kept informing him that his mother was a force to be reckoned with and no one could tell her to calm down. Daniel and his eldest son had tried to prepare the twins for the grandparent's visit but the twins didn't understand.

Angie and Charles pulled up at the house armed with many gifts for her new grandbabies. She adored all her grandkids but it had been years since the boys were young and now they often avoided her. Her other son Bill, didn't have children at all and never wanted them. Now though, she had 6 grand babies. "Charles hurry up. We have missed enough of those babies' lives already" Angie called out. "Calm down love, remember they are fearful of new people, loud noises and sudden movements. We don't want to scare them" Charles stated attempting to calm his wife down. "Don't you tell me what to do. Those are my grand babies in there and they will love me just like the older boys did" Angie fumed out stomping her foot at the front door. All of her grandchildren had been fearful of their grandmother at some point because of her behaviour.

Charles knocked on the door waiting for someone to answer while his wife stood tapping her foot impatiently. She wanted the door opened immediately. Daniel walked to the door ready to greet his parents while his older sons stayed playing with the twins. "Mum, dad ..." Daniel started only to be cut off by his mother whacking him in the arm. "Don't you mum, dad us. You are not too old to be taken over my knee. You kept those babies from me long enough. Your brother will be here tomorrow, he didn't even know he had two more nephews" Angie rambled out. "Nephews? Mum Darcy is a girl" Daniel told her stopping her in her tracks. Charles smiled, he had a little princess to spoil finally.

"A girl? Darcy is a girl? Daniel, why the hell didn't you tell me? I brought all boys toys" Angie fumed out slapping Daniel on the head. "Get out of my way I need to meet my grand babies" Angie called out pushing past her son and storming into the house. "We have a princess?" Charles asked his son. "Yeah Dad we have a princess, she is so innocent and sweet even after everything she has been through" Daniel told his father as they both entered the house going to the lounge room where all Daniel's children were waiting.

Dakota was standing in front of Darcy watching the new people in the room. Angie was standing still looking at the twins while Darcy was hiding her face in Mitty’s chest. "Oh my grand babies come to give your nanny a hug" Angie called out to the twins throwing her arms in front of her causing Dakota to flinch slightly. Charles immediately went to his wife's side. "Angie dear small movements" he reminded her. "Nice to see you too Nan" Mitchell laughed out earning a glare from his Angie. Dakota glared right back at her not liking the fact she was glaring at big Kota. Charles laughed at the kid, he didn't know who he was glaring at and if he wasn't careful Angie would give him a warning. "Don't get smart with me Mitchell I will whoop your behind" Angie told her eldest grandbaby.

"Be nice big Kota" Darcy said turning to look at the people talking. "That's right baby you tell your brother to be nice" Angie smiled but Darcy shook her head and pointed at Angie "Be nice Big Kota" she repeated causing Daniel and Charles to chuckle. "My love, I think she is telling you to be nice to her big brother," Charles told his wife. "Mum, Darcy is protecting Mitchell" Daniel told his mother proud of the fact that Darcy was sticking up for her brother. "Big Kota?" Angie asked causing Darcy and Dakota to nod their heads yes. "Yes I am Addy and that is big Kota or Mitty. Then we have Hunty, Jay and Ed" Daniel responded.

"Darcy and Dakota this is Nanny and Poppy" Daniel told his youngest while sitting next to them. Darcy peeked at Charles and then looked at Daniel before staring back at Charles "Big addy" Darcy whispered. "That's my dad" Daniel confirmed to Darcy. "Hmm" she acknowledged and then looked at Angie who was smiling at the twins with tears in her eyes. Darcy didn't really like the person called Nanny, she was loud and unpredictable. Dakota was weary of all new people, especially around Darcy so he stayed right beside her the entire time.

Charles and Angie sat catching up with everyone while the twins continued to play with the toys. Once they had finished catching up, Charles got up grabbing the bags that had the presents for the twins sitting on the floor next to his son. Dakota was watching and moved even closer to Darcy in case Charles tried to get to her as he didn't trust new people. "We have a few presents for both of you," Charles told the twins. "Yes, but your father failed to tell me Darcy was a little princess so I will have to go shopping again for her" Angie butted in. "Yeh thanks for the presents for us Nan" Eddie sassed out. "Oh, I got you all something just wait your turn. Turning into the middle child already I see" Angie sassed right back. Eddie was shocked, he usually got special treatment as the youngest but not now.

Daniel and Charles laughed at Eddie while Hunter ruffled his hair. "You will get used to the middle child title Eddie, welcome to the club" laughed Hunter. "Least you aren't the baby anymore" Jamie joked out. "Just means at Christmas you have to wait now" laughed Mitchell. The family had a tradition that the youngest got to unwrap their presents first from Nan and Pop because it was unfair of them to have to wait. Eddie used to love taking his time to rile up his brothers. Now he was going to have to wait for two others to finish.

Darcy and Dakota were looking at the neatly wrapped presents. They had never received a present before and didn't know what to do. "Go on, open it" Charles told the twins who just looked at the present. "Dad, I don't think they know what to do" Daniel told his father who nodded his head. Charles patted the stop next to him for the twins to come over so he could help them open the present. Dakota took hold of Darcy's hand and they both slowly made their way to Charles. Darcy squatted next to Charles looking at the present while Dakota kneeled next to her.

"You take the paper off the present and there is something special inside" Charles told the twins as he gently ripped the paper off the present. Darcy was watching the paper while Dakota was watching Charles to make sure he didn't hurt his sister. "He won't hurt her bud" Daniel reassured Dakota who nodded his head once. As more paper came off the present Darcy got excited "Kota wook" Darcy squealed when she saw the cars inside the wrapping paper. Dakota peeked in the paper and saw the red racing cars smiling. "Cc car," Dakota told his sister who nodded her head excitedly. Neither twin moved to take the cars once it was unwrapped, they just looked at it. "Would you like to play with the cars?" Charles asked the twins amazed that they hadn't tried to take the cars from him yet. "Ta peas Pa," Darcy said earning a chuckle from Daniel. Charles looked at his son raising his eyebrow. "She was saying thanks and please and you now have a new name Pa," Daniel told his father causing him to smile uncontrollably.
