Finding Emery

Chapter 11

Emery woke up and was still on her uncles lap. They had changed location though and she had no idea where she was. She did have a blanket draped over her and was nice and warm and comfortable. Emery stretched her arms up, she wasn't sure what time it was but she knew she had to get back to the shed for the night.

Uncle Mike smiled down at Emmy as she stretched, she looked like a little kitten curled up on his lap. He had brought her to his office after she fell asleep because he had wanted her close. The boys had wanted her to be place on the couch in the living room so they were close but uncle Mike refused. He had done his work with Emmy on his lap. "Afternoon baby, did you have a good nap?" Uncle Mike asked Emery.

Emery jumped, she wasn't expecting uncle Mike to speak to her. Emery nodded her head and then asked "what time is it?". "It's almost 4pm, you slept for a few hours. The doctor said you probably would sleep a lot until you get healthy". Emery again nodded her head. She knew that she had to get back to the shed because it would be dark soon.

Emery tried to wiggle off her uncle's lap. She wanted to use the toilet and then would make her way to the shed. "What are you doing?" Uncle Mike asked as Emery was wiggling to get off his lap. "I got to go bathroom" Emery mumbled. Uncle Mike smiled at the little girl and put her down on the ground pointing to a door. "Over there is the bathroom" he told Emery who nodded her head before going to the bathroom.

When Emery returned back to the office and looked at her uncle who was writing on the papers. Mike was finishing off some paper work and felt eyes on him. He looked up seeing Emery before opening his arms for her to come back and sit with him. Emery shook her head no, she had to get going but wasn't sure the way out.

Uncle Mike frowned, he wanted Emery to come back and sit with him. "Ummm, which way is out?" Emery asked. "What do you mean?" Uncle Mike asked. "Like how do I get out? I need to go back to the shed before it gets dark" Emery explained while standing in front of the desk. Uncle Mike stood quickly startling Emery in the process who took a step back and fell on her bum.

"Emery, you are not going back to the shed" Mike gritted out. They had discussed this already and it was frustrating that Emery was still in the mindset of returning to a shed instead of staying with her family. Emery glared at her uncle "I have no where else to stay. It's safe and dry there" Emery stated throwing her hands in the air. "It's safe and warm here and there are people to take care of you" Uncle Mike counteracted. "I can take care of myself" Emery stated stamping her foot in the process.

Jasper had come to check on his cousin and had walked into the office to see Emery stomping her foot and yelling at her uncle. He raised his eyebrow at Emery wondering what the hell was happening especially because his father look annoyed. "What's going on?" Jasper asked to try and break the starring contest between his dad and Emery. "Emery here wants to be shown the way out so she can head back to the shed for the night" Michael fumed out.

Jasper sighed, he didn't understand why the little girl wanted to go back to the abandoned shed at all. "Emmy, don't you want to stay with us?" Jasper asked kneeling in front of the little girl. Emery wouldn't look at Jasper because she did want to stay with them but she couldn't at all. She didn't want to be relying on other people at all. She also didn't know if it was safe because the man who had chased them was at the house working with uncle Mike.

"Emmy, look at me" Jasper stated. Emery looked at Jasper's forehead instead of looking him in the eye. It was a trick her daddy taught her for when she was scared. "Emery, we want you with us sweetheart. We want to be in your life and see you grow up" Jasper explained. Emery nodded her head in understanding and was thinking of a solution so they could still be in her life but wouldn't have to be in charge of looking after her.

Emery tapped her finger on her chin and then smiled. She knew what she had to do and how they could still see her but she didn't have to live with them. "I know, seeing daddy isn't coming back, I can come here in the day and then leave before it's dark to my shed" Emery said excitedly. She had come up with a solution to the problem and was excited about it.

Uncle Mike scoffed at the idea and Jasper tried not to laugh. Yes it was a compromise, but not a workable one at all. "And how do you get food?" Jasper asked. "Umm, I could have something here in the day. I don't eat much or I could work here to get money to buy some" Emery stated smiling. "And how are you going to go to school?" Jasper continued.

Emery didn't know what to say, because she had not thought of that at all. She kept quiet not knowing what to say and Uncle Mike and Jasper took that as a win. "Come on sweetheart, let's leave uncle Mike to his work and we can go and play or watch a movie" Jasper stated taking Emery by the hand. Emery would think of a game outside to play so she could get to the shed. She was determined to stay in her shed so she wasn't relying on anyone. She had made up her mind and there was no changing it. She was as stubborn as any other Quake in this house.
