Chapter 9
Sam and Charlie were called downstairs for breakfast. Charlie stayed with Sam and sat on his lap. She was thinking about what it meant to die seeing Sam had told her that's what happened to her mummy. "Charlie, I'm really sorry I scared you this morning by not waking up," Byron said. Charlie nodded her head, she wasn't mad at Byron at all. She was scared but now she knew that mummy wasn't sleeping.
"Mummy not sleeping mummy died" Charlie replied still not quite understanding what that meant. Everyone was stunned and looked towards her and Sam. "What? She needed to know the truth. It wasn't fair on her and I didn't want her to be scared if any of us was sleeping" Sam told them all. "He is right" Uncle John added before continuing "Charlie do you know what that means?". "Mummy had bad ouchie so she is gone to the sky" she replied remembering what Sam had told her. "Sam love Charlie now" she added. "That's right baby girl but mummy still loves you even though she can't be here" Sam added.
Charlie nodded her head. "Charlie stay with Sammy now?" She asked. "Yes, baby you're going to live here with us now. We are your big brothers and that's your uncle" Sam replied pointing to her brothers and uncle. Charlie nodded her head trying to understand it all. John saw his niece struggling with the information she had just been given. "Guess what Charlie?" He said to his niece "We all love Charlie very much" he added. Charlie smiled a genuine smile that lit the entire room up.
When they all finished breakfast the boys and Uncle John soon realised that they had no one to look after Charlie. "Ah, what do we do with her while we all go to work?" Oliver asked. Oliver was a personal trainer and had clients today that he needed to see. He worked in a gym, he probably could take Charlie and use the crèche there but he wasn't sure if they had space for her or not. "I took the week off when I got the call. She can stay with me but we will need to get a nanny for Charlie" Sam added. He was a lawyer and was a junior partner. He followed in his father's footsteps and still worked at the firm his father owned. He would take over the firm once his father stepped down. Luckily for him when they kicked their father out he moved cities and worked from the other office so they never had to see each other. Liam also had become a lawyer and was working in the firm as well. He was making a name for himself working from the bottom up just like Sam had done. Neither of them had wanted to gain anything by being that awful man's son.
The other boys didn't want to be anything like their father so they chose a different path. Byron the youngest had finished school last year and had decided to head to uni to become a graphic designer. "I can watch her. Uni is finished for the year. I was just going to hang out with my mates" Bryon suggested. "I'm off till Monday so you go be with your mates. We might need you next week if we can't find a nanny" Sam replied. "Why not put her in daycare?" Asked Uncle John. "She is too little" Liam replied not happy he had to go to work today. He hasn't been there long enough to have the week off. "She is three you all went to preschool and you were fine" John replied. "It's different we just get her and don't want her leaving us" Oliver said. John shook his head at his nephews, he knew they were going to be overprotective of their sister he just hoped she could handle it when she got older.
"You do realise that she is going to grow up, get a boyfriend, get married and have children one day?" John asked his nephews. He had been protective of his sister Sally but had let her down, he didn't want his nephews to make the same mistakes he had. He had pushed his sister into the hands of her abuser because he had tried to stop her growing up. "No, she is going to be my baby girl forever. Charlie promise me you will never have a boyfriend ok?" Sam said. "Ok Sammy" she agreed before saying "Sammy what's a boyfriend?" Liam stepped forward "Something you my dear will never have" he said before tickling her tummy and heading out the door to work. "Charlie I'll tell you when you're older what a boyfriend is. I won't let my nephews make the same mistakes I did with my sister" Uncle John said before kissing his niece and heading off to his work as an electrician. With the mention of their mother, the boy's mood turned sombre. They all blamed themselves for what had happened to their mother at the hands of their father. They never wanted that for Charlie at all, hell they didn't even want it for their own mother.
Byron and Sam got Charlie ready for the day after the others left. When they opened her suitcases they found the letters and the Biscuits from their mum's house along with the Christmas ornaments. Sam put that stuff on the table and made a note they would need to get Christmas decorations for the house as well. The boys hadn't really decorated since their mother left as it was always her thing and reminded them how they failed. Sam would do it this year for Charlie, she deserved to have Christmas. They also needed to go get things for Charlie and organise furniture for her own room.
Byron had blown off his friends as he wanted to spend time with his baby sister. She seemed to light up the world with her innocence and her smile. "Now baby girl we are going to go shopping and I want you to stay with Byron or me ok? I don't want you getting lost" Sam told his sister who nodded her head. When she went shopping with mummy she would sit in the trolley and if she was good she would get a treat, she hoped that would happen today too. "Charlie get a special?" She asked. "Ok, baby you can have a special" Byron replied, he couldn't say no to her at all.
