Chapter 1
Present day
Sitting at the table with his dad was Blair, they were talking about what Blair wanted to do now he had finished school. He and his dad were the closest. Blair lost his mum at 13 and always hoped she would reach out to him but five years in she never did. Nelson wanted a fresh start with his boys but Blair begged his dad to stay where they were thinking his mum would snap out of whatever was going on and come back. Not necessarily to the marriage, but to her children, more specifically to him. They older boys had more time with there mum but he only had 13 years and wanted more.
Bodie and Brax were out for the night. They had some party to attend but that's wasn't Blair's thing. They had invited him but he hadn't felt like going. Losing his mum had a huge impact on Blair and he was more introverted then the others. Brax and Bodie had mourned the loss of there mother but then got angry when they saw the damage she had done to Blair. They would never have anything to do with her again.
Blair's phone rang with a number he didn't recognise. "Hello?" Blair answered his phone. No one rang him that he didn't know. Someone having his number that he didn't know always caused Blair anxiety. "Blair, I need help" Melanie said into the phone. Bailey was still screaming and Melanie was in no state to try to comfort her daughter.
"Bailey shut up" Melanie yelled which was heard by Nelson. "Mum?" Blair questioned. Nelson was sitting up more alert now. "You need to come get Bailey now. I'm in trouble. Tyrone will kill Bailey. I'm leaving with him now, I'll text the address" Melanie rushed out before hanging up the phone. Nelson sat looking at his son who was looking at his phone.
"So what did your mum want?" Nelson asked. "She said I have to pick up Bailey. There was a baby screaming in the background. Apparently someone wants to kill Bailey. She wants me to get this Bailey and is texting me the address" Blair stated. He felt sick in the stomach. His mother had called but not for the reason he wanted her to. She just wanted him to get Bailey whoever that was.
Blair's phone pinged alerting him of a text. It was from the same number that just called him. '16/244 Lexington place Maroubra door is open we are leaving now hurry'. "Dad she sent me an address. Should we check it out?" Blair asked his father.
Nelson sat watching his son, not sure if they should check out the address or not. He could see his son conflicted about it. "What do you want to do?" Nelson asked his son, he didn't want to make the decision for Blair. Blair was watching his father "will you come with me?" He asked. Nelson nodded and stood up grabbing his keys. "Let's go" Nelson stated before heading to the door.
Twenty minutes later Blair and Nelson were at the door of a broken down unit. "Should I knock?" Blair asked his dad. They could hear a baby screaming but didn't know where it was coming from. "Just once" Nelson stated. Blair nodded his head and lifted his hand knocking on the door. As he knocked on the door, the door cracked open which caused the crying to get louder.
Nelson pushed the door open to the home. He heard the baby in distress and wanted to make sure the baby wasn't in the house. Regardless of what he felt for his ex wife, if there was a child in trouble he would help. Nelson and Blair stepped into the house seeing the pigsty that was Melanie's home. On the table was lines of coke, rolled up $5 bills and a card for cutting the coke. There was broken furniture and rubbish all in the lounge room. The kitchen looked like it was infested with bugs, the floor was brown in colour except near the fridge which had the door hanging off the hinges, there were specs of white tile just near the feet of the fridge.
The cry was louder and Nelson snapped out of his shock at the state of the house and went in search of the crying. Blair was stuck in shock with what he was seeing. How could someone live like this? He knew what the stuff on the coffee table were drug related, he was a teenager after all. He just didn't understand how his mother could end up like this.
Nelson walked deeper into the place searching for where the crying was coming from. As he got to the bathroom he peeked in and saw a baby who looked no more then 12 months old sitting in the bathtub, clearly in distress. He rushed into the bathroom and went to pick the child up. The baby's nappy was so full that it was triple the original size and slipping down the babies legs.
What Nelson saw broke his heart. As the nappy slipped he saw the little baby was a girl and had serve nappy rash which had began to blister. "Oh sweetheart" Nelson whispered. Nelson took the full nappy off the little girl and ran some warm warm to wash the little girl in hopes of helping with any pain the little girl may be in.
As the water hit the little girl she screamed in pain which brought Blair running into the bathroom. "Dad what's going on?" He called out causing the little girl to flinch. "Shh sweetheart it's ok" Nelson attempted to comfort the little girl and finish washing her with water. "Blair find a clean towel and check for nappy's" Nelson told his son.
Blair searched the place and found a towel which was semi clean but couldn't find any nappys. He also found a letter addressed to him on the nightstand in what looked like his mother's room. Blair walked back into the bathroom and held the towel out to his father who grimaced seeing the towel but took it none the less. He wrapped the towel around the little girl and then held her to his chest to comfort her.
Bailey held on for dead life, she had no idea who this person was but he had been the first person in a long time to comfort her. "I don't suppose there is any food here for this little one, she looks like she hadn't eaten in days" Nelson surmised looking at the little girl. Blair shook his head no before looking at the letter in his hand then back at his dad who was holding the little girl just as much as she was holding him.
