just stood and stared at Carlos as he continued to hold my gaze, he was out of his mind, me and Lewis were just friends, there was no way he was in love with me, the man in front of me was definitely delusional.
“What are you talking about?” I asked absolutely bewildered that he would even suggest such a thing, especially when we were in the palace, the king literally had eyes and ears everywhere. If someone had heard him then it really would not just be me to get it in the neck, but the royal beta would too.
“There’s no way, a wolf would ever come to our defense like that without there being a reason.” He argued, but it made no sense. Lewis had already had a mate, and was rejected, and it’s a known fact a wolf doesn’t just take any partner, they will only take a mate.

“No, I’m not. But that’s because I got punished three weeks ago, and I haven’t gotten my strength or my full range of movement back yet. Im still very much restricted, it’s just my chains aren’t visible.” I shrugged, casually leaving out the part about King Josh almost killing me. “Onto a more pressing concern… Do you know what would happen to me and Beta Lewis if you were caught saying something as ridiculous as that. We are just friends. He’s a wolf, surly you know they only accept their mates, they don’t get to choose who to be with.”
Well I suppose they do sort of, as it is very possible to reject their one and only mate, however most of them die from a broken heart before they’re even able to look at someone else. Never mind forcing themselves into a relationship that doesn’t feel at all natural.
“That’s not entirely true…” the beta spoke to me and had my full attention drawn to him after his words had met my ears. “We are actually very capable of choosing our own mate if our goddess gifted paring ends in either death or rejection.” Well, I wasn’t aware of that.
“I didn’t know that!” I really didn’t, I really have to do more research on the werewolf species. It might help me navigate my current situation better. “So our mates can quite easily reject us, they just choose not to?” I of course spoke in regards to mine and Carlos’s current circumstances. It’s a known fact that neither of us wanted this life and yet here we are, unfortunately fated to members of the royal family.
“They can, but Its not something a wolf would typically do, rejecting your mate, well thats an extremely rare occurrence, and there’s absolutely no going back once it’s final. Only a handful of people get rejected or loose their mates anyway, and being able to survive the heartbreak is even more rare. So actually finding someone who a broken wolf feels could make their soul complete once more, well that’s a phenomenon that happens once in a blue moon.” Wait, so if not many lycans, actually manage to survive being rejected then how did he?
