“I understand how you must be feeling, I assure you, you may speak freely with me.” I watched Carlos’s face drop and his head bowed.
“I’ll mind my tongue, lord beta, but please do not tell Lorellia.” I could see Carlos begin physically shaking as his eyes remained on the floor in front of Lewis, he was terrified of his mate, what had she done to him? I thought he was just a prisoner with obviously the occasional physical activity, but his fear, was worrying me.
“Hey,” I placed my hand gently on the man’s quivering shoulder and stepped in front of him, prompting him to raise his head. “You have no reason to trust me, but you are safe in here. Beta Lewis, won’t say anything to anyone.”
“How can you stand there and say you trust a wolf?!” Carlos practically yelled in my face, his shaking getting worse and worse as he stared at me in disgust. “How can you trust him? He’s not even just a wolf he’s the royal beta? He’s the kings best friend, do you think he got his title by sitting pretty during the take over?! No, he’s just as guilty of slaughtering our people as the king is himself. Are you that desperate for interaction that you’d get it from the likes of him.”
I never actually thought about it too much, but Carlos did have a point. Lewis must have helped in some regard. Otherwise the king wouldn’t have appointed him as his beta, however Carlos was severely out of line. Sure, he had his own problems but he didn’t have a clue what I had been through.
“Don’t judge me, you have no idea how hard it has been.” Carlos sneered and looked me up and down before jingling his chains.
“Your right, because while you were up here living the fucking life of a queen, I was left to rot down there.” Lewis said nothing, he simply remained quiet, watching my interaction with the kings step uncle.
“I’m not saying you’ve not had it tough these past few months, but I’ve been in complete solitude for years.”
He was right, it’s only been a few months for me, he has dealt with being a prisoner for years. I couldn’t imagine going through all of this for as long as he has. No wonder he was so scared, especially now as he’s finally out of the dungeon, after all that time it must be so strange to walk freely, well semi freely as he was still in chains.
“Hang on a minute.” Beta Lewis quickly piped up at Carlos’s words, maybe he was angry at being called out. “Look, you can say whatever you want about me, but don’t stand there and dismiss everything Dylan has gone through just because she hasn’t been here for as long as you have.” He was coming to my aid? I thought he was going to defend himself. “While you were obviously left down there alone for so long, Dylan hasn’t only had to survive his graces treatment but she has also had to do so while being solely and directly in the public eye.” He rambled on, I wasn’t sure when his hand had begun to rest on my shoulder, but I relished in the warmth it gave me.
Carlos looked completely taken aback by the betas words and actions, his sight was darting between the two
of us so fast I thought he might have gone dizzy. His eyes made their way to where Lewis had placed his hand
and a frown made it way on his face. A thousand questions began to quickly flood his orbs, but only one came blurting out, as he looked me straight in the eye.
“How the Fuck did you get the Royal Beta to fall in love with you?!”
