Chapter 405 Shirley Was Kidnapped
Jean took out her cell phone. As soon as she saw the name on the screen, her face had a complicated expression appear on it.
"What is it?" Zed watched the change of expression of Jean's face and immediately realized something was wrong. Wanting to know what it was, he quickly asked her. After heaving a long sigh, Jean passed the cell phone to Zed.
Zed took it with puzzlement. After he saw the name "Joy" on the screen, he realized what the problem was. "Let me talk to her," Zed said wanting Jean to relax.
In truth, Jean really didn't feel like talking to Joy, so she nodded her head to Zed's offer.
Zed pressed the connect button. Before he could open his mouth, Joy's anxious voice came through the other end of the line. "Jean, Shirley is in big trouble. Could you please save her......" Zed quietly heard until she was finished.
Realizing she was done, he said, "Jean is taking a shower. I will ask her to call you back when she comes out." A moment of silence followed on the other end of the call, but Joy's worried panting was still audible to him. A few seconds later, Joy seemed to make up her mind and her tone was somewhat composed. She begged, "Zed, could you please help me to save Shirley? Winner is gone. Now all I have is Shirley. I can't let anything bad happen to her again. So please save her for the sake of the Wen family, as you are Henry's son-in- law, okay?"
Zed wrinkled his nose. He was well aware that Joy had the tendency to change her tone when she needed something.
"I am sorry. I don't think I have such a close relationship with you. So I have to say no." Zed turned her down without giving it a second thought.
"Zed, please. I beg you. I will do whatever you want me to do. I will give you anything you want if you help me now. Okay? Please..." Joy used a pleading tone and carried on begging. After a while, She started to cry on the other end of the line. Zed frowned and looked at Jean who was watching him carefully.
Actually, Zed had put her on speaker when he pressed the connect button, so Jean had heard the entire conversation between them.
Confused, Jean wondered what had happened that put Joy into such a condition. Joy, who had been selfish and arrogant, was now asking for her help.
'This is an opportunity that has been sent me! I shouldn't let it go,' she thought secretly.
Jean set aside her self-esteem and decided to take the phone.
Moving forward, she took the phone from Zed's hand.
Zed didn't want Jean to get involved in it which was why he answered the phone himself.
Now seeing Jean take the phone from him, he showed concern on his face. But he had no choice but to let her do it.
From Joy's tone and attitude, Zed deduced something serious must have happened to Shirley.
'Why did Jean want to answer the phone?
Joy didn't dare talk to me in a rude tone.
However, if Jean talks directly to Joy and refuses to help then Joy will put all the blame on Jean. And we don't know what happens to Shirley now. If it is too complicated, I don't want Jean to get involved that mess,' thought Zed feeling worried. "What's wrong with Shirley?" Jean cut to the chase as soon as she talked on the phone.
"Jean..." Joy was startled. She hadn't expected Jean to talk suddenly while she was still focusing on persuading Zed. When Joy spoke, it was in a choking voice. "Shirley! That silly girl got into trouble. Jean, please help me save her. After all, she is your sister....." "Are you calling the wrong person?" Jean asked sarcastically. "Though we share a father, we are anything but sisters. Besides, Shirley has been bossy and bullying. She has strong connections with people. If she has trouble, why can't they help her? You'd better go and speak to them...."
On the other hand, Zed was hearing the conversation with confusion. But somehow he relaxed when he heard Jean spoke impolitely with Joy.
"Jean, if I wasn't out of options, I wouldn't have come to beg you. I knew you wouldn't agree to help, but I still wanted to try my luck. Even if I get mocked, humiliated and insulted by you, I don't care. I am willing to sacrifice everything for Shirley. And I will do whatever it costs, even if it means giving my life away." Joy was weeping quietly on the other end.
"I have a question about Winner. Why didn't I see you being so sad when Winner died?" Jean was still bloodthirsty and spoke with a hint of sarcasm.
"Winner..." Joy broke down suddenly. "Shirley was kidnapped by the guys who killed Winner... My poor Shirley. I didn't know she would end up in the hands of these people. I really don't know how and where she is now..."
Joy couldn't hold it anymore and let out a shriek.
Jean answered the phone just because she thought Joy was a nuisance. All she wanted was to get rid of her after mocking her briefly.
But to her surprise, something big had happened. Her heart pounded when she heard about it.
She suspected that Winner's death had something to do with Shirley. But now she was informed that Shirley was kidnapped by the people who killed Winner.
Things started to become more and more complicated.
"If it is a case of kidnapping then why don't you call the police instead? I can't save Shirley. It is useless for you to come to me,"
Jean said to Joy coldly.
"These people warned me not to go to the police. If I do that then they will kill Shirley!" Joy wept and wept thinking about this.
Jean nodded after she understood the explanation. 'After all, Winner was killed by these people. This kind of threat worked effectively on Joy. She would easily believe their words because she didn't want to lose another child,' thought Jean.
Now she turned her eyes to Zed who had been silent all the time. He was sitting behind her and had a look of contemplation on his face.
Noticing her stare, Zed looked at her and shook his head slightly.
Jean felt worried and put her hand on the cell phone to stop Joy from hearing her conversation with Zed. "It is a matter of life and death after all. No matter what grudges I have with Shirley, I can't sit back and do nothing..."
"You'd better do nothing about it!" Zed watched Jean and sighed. "You can't get involved in this. I won't let you put yourself in danger."
"Zed..." Jean watched him feeling defensive. "You know, if I don't help and something bad happens to Shirley in the end, then I will feel guilty all my life. Joy will hate me for the rest of her life too because of that. I don't care if I can succeed in saving Shirley or not, but I still have to give it a try."
"Idiot..." Zed sighed. "It has nothing to do with you. Why do you have to get involved in that trouble? Either Shirley is alive or dead, it is none of your concern."
"But the Wen family is not what it used to be. Winner had been killed. If something happens to Shirley, the Wen family is all gone..." Jean wouldn't give up persuading Zed to let her help.
Zed watched Jean's face and then sighed looking disappointed. "Okay. You say yes to her. But you can't do it. I will do it."
"No, Zed." To his surprise, Jean shook her head and watched Zed. "I agreed to save Shirley because I have other intention."
"What intention?" Zed was startled and he asked without thinking.
"You heard it just now. The person who kidnapped Shirley also killed Winner. I have to know how Winner died," Jean said gravely. 000
