Chapter 5
Nathan did not like studying, so every minute in class would feel like years to him, especially his least favorite subject, mathematics. He thought he would never have to experience that feeling again after starting university, yet it happened on that day.
When Annabelle came out of the operating room with a pale face, Nathan’s clothes were already drenched with sweat. As soon as he heard of the door being opened, he immediately jumped up from his seat.
“Anna? Are you all right? Does it hurt? Can you walk? Do you want me to carry you?” Nathan spluttered in nervousness. When Annabelle could not speak, he glared at the nurse behind her and demanded, “What’s the matter with you all? Don’t you know she just had an operation? How can you let her walk out like this?”
One of the nurses did not feel sorry at all, and she even rolled her eyes at him.
Seeing that, Nathan was so furious that he wanted to go forward and berate the nurse. “I would have beaten her up if she wasn’t a woman! How could she roll her eyes at me when she’s in the wrong?” he grumbled.
Fortunately, Annabelle was there to hold her agitated brother back. While soothing him, she apologized to the nurse. “Why are you apologizing to her? She…”
“I didn’t do it!” Annabelle blurted out when she saw that he still could not calm down.
With that, Nathan immediately fell silent.
Lowering her head, she explained quietly, “I got afraid.”
Everything about the abortion deterred her from going through with it, be it the silver gleam of the surgical equipment, the fact that she was asked to remove her pants, or the irreversible harms of the surgery described by the doctor.
Seeing Annabelle’s ashen face, Nathan instinctively comforted her, “It’s all right! We don’t have to do it if you’re afraid! Let’s go home!”
Both of them apologized to the hospital staff and left the hospital.
However, the sister and brother duo hesitated upon arriving outside their house. Their parents cared deeply about the family’s reputation, so they would never let Annabelle keep the child. At that, they were apprehensive about going home, fearing the consequences that might await them.
However, they also had nowhere to go.
Annabelle and Nathan exchanged looks with one another but could not come up with a solution at the moment. It was their other sibling who helped them make a decision.
Ashley had just returned home. After seeing both of them wandering at the entrance, she rolled down her window and asked with her brows raised, “Didn’t you go for the surgery just now? Why are you two standing here?”
Thus, Annabelle and Nathan decided to stop pressuring themselves into finding a way out of the matter. Resigning themselves to their fate, they followed Ashley’s car into the compound.
As expected, Madeline flew into a rage when she found out that Annabelle did not get the abortion. “What are you trying to do? Haven’t you disgraced us enough? Will you only be satisfied when you sully our family’s name completely? It’s your own choice to be degenerate. Do you want to ruin Nathan and Ashley, too?” she roared.
Ashley glanced at Annabelle, who hung her head silently, and appeased their mother in a gentle voice, “Mom, don’t be mad. If Anna doesn’t want to undergo an abortion, why don’t we let her give birth to the child?”
“No!” Madeline objected to it without hesitation. “How will she marry anyone in the future if she has a child out of wedlock? What would outsiders think of her? What would they think of the daughters of our family?”
At the end of the day, she was most apprehensive that Ashley would be affected if others were to doubt the upbringing of her children.
She did not want to experience the feeling of being mocked and made fun of whenever she went ever again.
Ashley put her hands on Madeline’s shoulders and said firmly, “Mom, let me finish! Of course, we won’t let Annabelle give birth to the child while in the Ross family.”
Madeline, who was so furious that she almost snapped, slowly calmed down after hearing Ashley’s suggestion.
“Yeah! If Annabelle wants to give birth to the child, she’ll have to leave the Ross family!” she thought.
After seeing that her mother had calmed down, Ashley sat down beside her. She then looked at Annabelle, who was standing there silently, and said, “Now that things have come to this point, aren’t you going to tell us who the child’s father is? The best solution right now is for you to marry him!”
Annabelle’s face did not relax despite Ashley’s good idea. She only knew that the man’s last name was Walker and nothing else, Besides, even if she did, she had no plans to marry him because he was someone who would not brush his teeth after eating garlic.

Madeline saw her reaction and knew Annabelle did not know who the child’s father was. Immediately, she started forming random speculations by herself.
Enraged by her imagination of Annabelle fooling around with a group of people at the bar, she lost all her grace as a wealthy wife and stood up to hit her daughter.
While striking the latter, she also berated her for her shameful behavior.
Ashley tried her best to calm Madeline down. Nathan still remembered that Annabelle was still pregnant because she dared not go through with the abortion. “It would be bad if she had a miscarriage!” he thought as he shielded Annabelle behind.
him.
His face was scratched by his mother in a bid to protect Annabelle from her.
Upon witnessing that sight, Ashley could not help but narrow her eyes.
His protectiveness toward Annabelle made her feel uncomfortable.
“Mom, Mom! We can talk things out. Remember how well–bred Annabelle has always been? She’s not the kind of woman who would do such a thing!” Nathan pleaded.
“How can you still defend her when she’s already pregnant? She’s just a whore!” Madeline screeched.
Her last sentence caused Annabelle, who had been silent the whole time, to shudder. She could not believe that the derogatory remark came from her own mother.
“I admit that this is my fault!” Annabelle tried her best to widen her eyes as though that would prevent the annoying tears from falling. However, the change in her voice was beyond control as it turned hoarse. “However, if all of you didn’t leave me alone on my birthday, I would have never gone there! Why did you all do this to me? Have I stopped being your daughter after Ashley returned? Aren’t you all worried that something had happened to me when I didn’t come home that night? You just keep hitting me and cursing at me! I won’t get the abortion, and I don’t have anyone to marry! Just kick me out if you think I’m a disgrace!”
Afterward, she sobbed while running upstairs.
Nathan looked at Madeline in mild disappointment before running after Annabelle worriedly.

Madeline was utterly stunned from being shouted at by her daughter. When she returned to her senses, she almost fainted
anger. “She’s still trying to drag Ashley through the mud? And she’s even saying that it’s our fault that she fooled around at the bar?” she grumbled inwardly.
Ashley sat Madeline down on a chair. Then, she frowned and said softly, “Mom, don’t be mad, lest you fall sick. If there’s no other way, let’s do this…”
Upstairs, Annabelle cried for a while and came to a realization that she was being too impulsive just now. “Mom scolded me because she was upset with my behavior. This whole thing is my fault to begin with. No one held me at knifepoint and forced me to go to the bar that night. Besides, I was the one who kept pestering the man,” she thought.
Blinking her reddened eyes, she looked at Nathan and asked, “Did Mom get even angrier?”
He immediately consoled her in a soft voice, “It’s nothing. You know what our family is like. Everything will be fine after you
down and apologize to her later.”

Both of them made their way down the stairs. Before Annabelle could apologize, Madeline demanded that she leave the country.
“If you want to give birth to the child, you can, but do it abroad. And don’t bring him back after you give birth,” Madeline
snarled.
Annabelle was at a loss for words when she heard that.
