was that doctor from around here? He doesn't seem like someone from the focal clinic," Alexander asked suddenly, breaking the silence.
Clara paused, her fingers hovering o
"screen. She glanced ugrat him, hesitating; for a jnment before replying.
"A volleague recommended him."
She kept her explanation briet, Clara distn't want to mention Filan's involvement. His background wasn't simple, and she wasn't sure where Alexander came from newhsche was here. Revealing too much could complicate things for Mlun, and she didn't want to risk that. Alexander raised a brow. "The guy who dropped you off the other night?"
Alexander's mind flashed back to the man who had picked her up Friday night. He'd only caught a glimpse of his profile, but something about him seemed vaguely familiar. He couldn't place a fingri on it, though
Since Clara didn't seem inclined to elaborate, Alexander dropped the conversation. "Well, thank him for me."
"I will," Clara replied with a nod
Alexander studied her for a moment longer, then leaned back against the headboard, pretending to be casual as he asked, "You seem to like painting a lot. So why did you come out here to trach instead of sticking with it?
Casa's hand froze mid-motion. That was the first time Alexander had asked such a personal question.
Her fingers curled slightly, her palm pressing into her lap as she quelled the flicker of unease rising inside her. She timed her gaze to him, her voice ever. "What about you? You don't seem like you're from here, either. So why are you in this little town?" Alexander blinked, momentarily caught off guard. He hadn't expected her to flip the question back on him. He'd thought she was the type to quietly deflect, but clearly, he'd misjudged her.
A grintugged at his lips as he leaned against the headboard, his tone light but with a tinge of amusement. "Touché. You're not as docile as you look, huh?" Casa
a didn'tnse to his bait. She wasn't someone who pretended to be soft-spoken-she'd just learned to adjust her demeanor around people.
Growing up under Wren's watchful eye, she'd become the person he wanted her to be: agreeable, polite, and sweet. But that part of her no longer mattered Care stood and walked over to the IV stand, adjusting the tubing as she replaced the finished saline bag with the next one. Her movements were careful but efficient, just as Dr. Lincoln had instructed.
"This is the last one. Once it's done, you can take the needle out yourself. I'll head back and start lunch"
She turned to leave without waiting for a response, but Alexander's voice stopped her at the door. "Are you still mad at ine?"
With that, she left.
Back in the city, Willie had been left scrambling to manage everything in Wren's absence. He had left abruptly, leaving Willie to handle the tallout.
vy had been trying to reach lam for two days, and her calls went straight to voicemail. At first, she'd thought ignoring him and complaining to Carlisle would make binitome crawling back out of guilt, but no Wren hadn't i botleted to send a message. Furious, Ivy decided to stop walling.
she caught the first flight back from Havenbrook and headed straight to his offer. As someone holding a prominent title in the company, she didn't have much trouble walking past the reception desk toce inside, she made a beeline for Taylor, catching her in the break room.
"ME Jennings," Ivy began, her tone slap but friguing politeness. "Has Mr. Zachman been the office these past few days?"
Taylor hesitated, the kaew lwy and Wien were set to announce their engagement soon, but she also low the real reason Wren had been pulling all-nighters in his
