Wolf Pack

Chapter Lumberyard

“Could I go meet the lumberyard tomorrow?”

I asked, because I wanted to know everything there, and maybe do something there to feel useful.

I wanted to know everything, and maybe even work a little.

“I’m loving knowing everything here, but I’ve been working since I was 16, maybe there’s something I can help there, even if it’s a contract to do, feeling useful can be good.”

I finished smiling.

“I think it’s a great idea, you’ll be very useful indeed.”

Jack said a little before biting into the pasta carbonara we made.

“If you like my granddaughter, we can even organize a position for you there, I would love to see you working in the lumber.”

Hughes said, wiping his soaked gray beard.

“How’s the adaptation going?”

Jack asked me worriedly, his green eyes narrowed

“I had some memories, mainly in my room now, which used to belong to my parents. But I don’t feel the headaches anymore, and the memories, they don’t come with pain, they come with longing. I won’t deny that it’s all new, but I’ll soon use to everything.”

“I’m sure of it Luna.”

He said smiling and finishing his pasta.

We arranged for Jack to have breakfast with us, and we would go to the lumberyard together. After dinner, Jack went home, and after saying goodbye to everyone, I organized my room as much as I could until I fell asleep, I was exhausted, it had been a great day. My room still didn’t look like me and I tidied everything up temporarily, but I was feeling that I wasn’t going back to my old apartment, and I liked that, I liked my new life.

“I ran through the woods, bare feet, felt the wet mud get under my fingers, and I heard a sound of branches breaking and dry leaves breaking to my right, and a wolf came out of the woods, he was gray, the moon lit his shiny fur and his eyes shone a very light and intense gray, his eyes were like mine, he narrowed his eyes and looked like he was going to attack me, suddenly he jumped on me…”

And I woke up, it was already morning and practically breakfast time, I got ready, went downstairs and still had time to help Alina finish the toast.

Soon Jack arrived, we all sat at the table and had our coffee together, but soon Edward left, he needed to organize all the guard for the Ball tomorrow, they told me that there is a law that allows all wolves to walk free in all lands in the Moon Ball, but at the same time that they can walk free, they cannot carry out any kind of violence, because it is a night of love (and sex as Alina explained to me too) all wolves can move freely, and this allows their Soulmeet If you’re from another Pack, or even the Forsaken, you’ll meet without any obstacles, even so the guards were needed to act in case someone needed it.

“You’re thoughtful today, did something happen? Is it the memories?” Jack asked worriedly. “You hold the handle of your mug against your face when you think.”

I laughed at his noticing it, and indeed I was resting the handle of the mug against my face instead of drinking.

“I had a dream that night, with a gray wolf, I’ve never seen him before, I don’t know if it’s a memory or if my mind created him, but it was very real.”

“Isn’t that one of the Forsaken who attacked us? One of them was a gray wolf.”

“No, this one was different, he wasn’t mixed, he was completely gray, even his eyes were gray, but I can’t explain how. Never mind, it must be my imagination.”

“Do you think she…” Alina was about to say something quietly to Hughes, but he cut her off with,

“It’s about time we went to the lumberyard.”

Alina looked awkward, with a worried expression on her face, but Hughes winked at her, held out his hand to me, smiling, and we left.

“What was this?”

“This what?” My grandfather answered me trying to disguise his nervousness, I had known him for a short time, but I was always good at reading people.

“Hughes, I’m your granddaughter, but I’m not a child. What happened between you and Alina now?”

“Nothing my child, don’t worry.”

I knew there was some secret involved in this, I trusted them, but I didn’t like not knowing everything.

Jack drove and the three of us went to the lumber yard, and it was hugely bigger than I imagined, there were at least 5 huge production halls, and a 4-story office building.

“That’s where all the sustenance of the village comes from.”

Hughes said proudly.

“Each wolf chooses his place here, many want some more physical work, we are very physical beings, so many work in planting, caring for the land, cutting trees, handling the cutting, transport, distribution, wood treatment, and then invoicing and final transportation.”

We were passing by the sheds and the processes, and everyone was waving to the three of us, it was amazing to see how, in addition to being a respected Alfa, Hughes was also a beloved boss. I wasn’t sure I had any leadership skills, despite being talked about all the time in high school and college, but walking with the two of them side by side was almost funny, the two exuded power, especially within the lumber yard. From posture, to behavior, and how people governed them, even though they were dear, it was visible that the command came from them.

We arrived at the office building, as Hughes said goodbye, heading towards the sheds.

“And here, it’s more Jack’s area, it’s all the administration of the logger, we manage everything together, both the logger and the village as a whole, but let’s say that Jack understands the bureaucratic part better.”

We went up through the floors of the building by the panoramic elevator and it was possible to see everything widely, and in addition to the reception on the ground floor, there were many tables in office cubicles, and Jack was showing each sector.

“On the first floor we have the reception, on the second floor we have all the billing and invoices, on the third floor we have the truck tracking and logistics sector, on the third floor we have the accounting sector, and on the fourth floor we have my office and Hughes, and as we have plenty of space, you can stay there for a while.”

While Jack explained we went up each floor, and when we reached the last one, the doors and partitions were made of glass, it was the most beautiful part of all, with a beautiful view of the forest and the village, but before we entered there was a reception with a desk right next to the elevator exit. She was a tall, slender woman, with straight black hair, she had a sweet face and blue eyes, which drew attention in her black framed glasses.

“Who is this?” She asked losing all the sweetness in her face, speaking bluntly.

“Mina, this is Luna, Hughes’ granddaughter. Luna, this is Mina, my assistant.” Jack spoke introducing us, but the woman just made me look up and down and almost with an expression of disgust she gave me my hand lightly and said:

“Nice to meet you.”

“The pleasure is all mine. ”

I said knowing that her sentence was completely false.
