Chapter 147

At that moment, Mercer’s cold gaze swept over Jasmine. Calla followed his gaze and looked at Jasmine as well.

Seeing her with her head bowed, Jasmine appeared timid and shrinking.

Calla suddenly understood that Jasmine had told Rose everything. Jasmine had worked for the Garland family for many years, and Rose was her true employer!

Although a little annoyed, Calla realized Jasmine was only being loyal to her employer. After all, she had to listen to whoever paid her salary. In her case, it was the Garland family, so Calla let it go.

“Mr. Garland, I’m only a helper. When Mrs. Garland Senior asks, I have to tell the truth,” Jasmine explained. She tugged at her collar, unable to

bear Mercer’s stare.

“You can pack your things and return to Sedonia,” Mercer said coldly.

“Yes, sir.” Relieved at this outcome, Jasmine quickly went to her room to pack.

Calla grabbed the handle of her suitcase and turned to leave.

Sophie’s eyes darted to the coffee table, noticing the bank card, diamond ring, and necklace. She stepped forward in front of Calla,

blocking her path.

“What do you want?” Calla looked at Sophie with contempt.

Sophie crossed her arms and sneered, “I heard your family is from the lower class and isn’t very well–off.”

“What are you trying to say?” Calla knew her next words wouldn’t be kind, but she couldn’t back down.

“There are many valuable items in Mercer’s residence. Make sure you

haven’t accidentally dropped any expensive things in your suitcase.” Sophie’s eyes were full of mockery and provocation.

“Sophie, have you said enough?” Mercer suddenly stood up.

Hearing this, Calla turned and looked at Mercer, who was already frowning. The next moment, she brought her suitcase to Mercer, bent down to unzip the bag, and dumped all its contents out.

Clothes and personal items from the suitcase were scattered across the carpet. “Look, is there anything of yours in here?” Calla said, lifting her chin and staring at Mercer.

Mercer’s eyes flickered, and he asked softly, “Is this necessary?”

“Check thoroughly now. I don’t want to be accused of taking your things in the future,” Calla said. Her voice shook with emotion.

She had thought she could handle this calmly, but it turned out she couldn’t. It was clear that she still had much to learn about self–control.

Calla’s words made Mercer frown. She knelt and began shoving the clothes and items back into the suitcase. Mercer watched her in silence, his lips pressed together.

After locking the suitcase once more, Calla didn’t spare Mercer a glance. She pulled the suitcase and walked away.

She eventually came to stand before Sophie, whose eyes were gleaming with the light of victory.

“If anyone should check, it’s the owner of this residence. You’re not in a position to criticize me yet.” With that, Calla turned to leave.

“You-” Sophie was too angry to speak, knowing full well that she wasn’t the lady of the household yet.

As she reached the entrance, Calla suddenly turned back and smiled at Sophie. “This residence and this man are both things I don’t want. If you

like them, take them all. I’m starting a new life from now on!”

With those words, she walked away, leaving Mercer and Sophie stunned.

Those words were meant for herself as much as they were for Sophie. It was time to let go of everything and start a brand new life.
