Chapter 145

The young man said to Simon, “Sir, are you here to get a divorce? I’m number three in the queue. Would you like to take my place?”

Simon frowned upon hearing this. They had tried their best to delay the inevitable, and now this person suddenly appeared.

“I don’t think that’s necessary. You should keep it for yourselves,” Simon said quickly, glancing at Mercer’s ashen face.

“It’s okay. We’re not getting a divorce. We’ve patched things up!” The young man grinned, holding the woman’s hand, and she looked just as happy.

Simon was speechless. He had handled many tricky situations for Mercer, but he never encountered something so odd.

While Simon hesitated, Calla looked at Mercer. His hands were in his coat pockets. His face was ice- cold, and his anger probably hadn’t subsided yet.

The next moment, Calla made up her mind. She took the number slip from the young man, and exclaimed, “Thank you!”

Calla’s action stunned Simon, and Mercer’s brow twitched slightly.

“Number three, please proceed to Window One,” the clerk announced just then.

Calla didn’t expect the number to be called so quickly. Her legs felt like lead, unable to move.

Mercer, still fuming with anger, strode toward Window One first. Though heavyhearted, Calla followed

after him.

They sat side by side at Window One. They handed over their IDs and their marriage certificate. After a few questions, the clerk presented the divorce certificate for them to sign.

Mercer took the pen without hesitation and scribbled his name. Calla followed his lead, sining her name briskly.

After leaving the courthouse, the two of them had nothing to do with each other anymore.

Neither Mercer nor Calla spoke a word. Simon suggested, “Why don’t we come back tomorrow?”

She had thought she’d feel relieved after the divorce, but now she felt more conflicted than ever.

Mercer didn’t say a word to her. He walked down the steps and got into his car.

Calla slowly followed, ready to leave, when Simon caught up with her.

“Mrs. Gar-” He stopped and corrected himself. “Ms. Sherman, please get in the car.“.

“I need to go back and get my luggage.” She was no longer Mercer’s wife, so she needed to leave quickly. She had packed her bags the night before.

“Mr. Garland is heading home too. It’s on the way,” Simon explained quickly.

Hearing this, Calla still refused. “I don’t think that’s necessary. It’s easy to hail a cab here.” Simón hesitated, then asked, “You’re moving out of Mr. Garland’s place. Shouldn’t you do it when he’s there?”

In an instant, Calla understood what Simon meant. Mercer wanted to watch her leave to make sure she didn’t take anything valuable from his residence. Realizing this, Calla’s lips trembled slightly. Did he think so little of her?

Angrily, she stepped into the car. This time, she chose to sit in the front seat, not in the back with him.

If she had any lingering feelings for him before, now she truly despised him. He turned out to be another jerk, no better than her cheating ex–boyfriend,
