Chapter 139

Half a month passed quickly, and Calla’s complexion gradually improved. Although she was still melancholic, she had regained some of her vitality to some extent.

One sunny afternoon, the winter sun was especially warm. Seeing Calla cooped up inside every day, Jasmine kindly suggested, “Mrs. Garland, you’ve been recovering for a while now. The weather is so nice outside, why don’t you go out for a walk?”

“I still feel drained,” Calla replied. She had been lethargic these past few days–lounging on the couch, her mind elsewhere.

Today marked a month since what was supposed to be the birth of her baby.

She also wondered if Mercer would come back to propose divorce?

She both longed for and dreaded this day. She longed for it because she would finally be free. Yet, she dreaded it because it would mean they were truly over.

“The more you lie around, the worse you’ll feel. It’s better to go out and clear your mind,” Jasmine advised.

Calla frowned but finally heeded Jasmine’s words. After all, life had to go on, and staying in this daze every day wasn’t a solution. She still had to take care of her mother and sister, so she needed to get better quickly.

She changed into a sky–blue dress, which lifted her mood a little. Slipping on white flats, she headed out the door.

As she stepped out of the apartment building, Calla hesitated, unsure of where to go. Suddenly, she heard a voice.

“Calla!”

She turned around and saw the gentle Harlan standing about thirty feet away. Surprised to se she watched as he walked up to her.

After looking her up and down, Harlan asked with concern, “How are you feeling?”

“As you can see, I’m fine,” Calla replied with a bright smile, though her voice was still weak.

“You still look very pale,” Harlan said with a frown.

Calla touched her cheek and smiled. “I’ll probably be better in a while.”

Harlan’s concern was evident in his eyes. Calla could feel it, and a warmth flowed through her desolate heart. Knowing there was no possibility of anything blooming between them, she kept her distance…

“What are you doing here?” she asked. The surrounding area consisted entirely of high–end residences. A university professor like him had no reason to be here. Was he looking for her?

Harlan smiled sheepishly. “I’ve been very worried about you lately, but I didn’t have your contact

information. So I often walk around here, hoping to see you. Today, I got lucky.”

Calla felt a mix of emotions. After a moment’s hesitation, she quickly smiled. “You don’t need to worry about me. My husband treats me well-”

Before she could finish, Harlan stepped forward’and grabbed her shoulders. “How can you call that treating you well?”

“He sent me to the best hospital and bought me the most expensive supplements. He also hired a private caregiver. Isn’t that good enough?” Calla’s gaze fixed on Harlan.

She knew better than anyone how insincere her words were. For Mercer, these gestures were effortless and of no significant meaning. She wanted his genuine affection. However, hoping for such sincerity from him was a fantasy.

At that moment, a black Bentley slowly pulled up to the side of the road–unbeknownst to the two. The rear window was quickly lowered, revealing a stern face.
