Chapter 9
Work has just ended and everyone at the company has begun to leave one after the other. Charlotte had a lot to do at work so she waited for a few more hours.
"Are you really, not going home now?" Bella asked for the umpteenth time. "I think you need to rest, ma'am."
Charlotte smiled. "You don't have to worry about me, Bella. You can go home."
"Promise me, ma'am, that you won't stay in the office for too long."
Charlotte nodded. "I won't. Now, get going." She gestured with her hand.
Bella picked her bag up. "See you tomorrow, ma'am."
Charlotte only waved but said nothing. After Bella left, she picked up some documents and began to work on them; she needed to organize all the documents for her early meeting with the executives tomorrow. She also needs to work on the real estate documents and get them ready so they can get to work by tomorrow.
She stared at the wall clock and sighed. She had been working for an hour now and she is yet to finish up.
How she wished she had someone to help her out. She thought. That would have been easy.
She had thought about asking Bella for help which would have been a good idea but she doesn't want to be selfish and make her work overtime.
"You are not going home?" Someone asked.
Charlotte looked up to see Melvin staring at her. She could tell for some reason that he wasn't asking because he cared but because he suspected she could be up to something.
"I will leave when I am done." She replied.
Melvin furrowed his brows. "And when will that be?"
"Thirty minutes."
"Fifteen," Melvin replied. "You have fifteen minutes. You can't keep others waiting for your selfish reasons."
Charlotte was shocked at Melvin's words to her. How is she selfish when all she was trying to do was get her work done?
She sighed. There was no point explaining anything to him; he wouldn't believe her anyway. She has no reason for her to stay at the company either; he doesn't trust her. Neither would she be going with any of the documents or he might accuse her of something else; she will have to resume work so early tomorrow to get things done.
She stood up. "Fine, I will leave now."
Melvin shrugged but said nothing. She began to arrange her table. She could see Melvin still waiting at the door.
He is not going to leave until she is out of the office. She thought.
She picked up her bag and headed downstairs leaving Melvin who had entered into the office behind. As she headed to her car, she wondered why he entered her office but shrugged off the thought.
He can search all he wants; she doesn't have anything to hide. With this thought, she entered her car and drove home
Melvin came out of the company a few minutes later and instead of heading home, he headed to a bar to join his friends. Just a few days ago they had agreed to meet up in a bar but Melvin's busy schedule prevented that and they had to reschedule their meeting. Melvin got to the bar just a few minutes after David, his best friend walked in and sat down.
"Thought you were not coming," Matthew his close friend, yet his business competitor said.
"You must be disappointed seeing me," Melvin answered.
"I guess I am," Matthew picked up his glass of wine. "How are you today?"
Melvin sat down. "Don't tell me you guys are having fun without me."
"You don't expect us to sit here doing nothing while we wait for the almighty Melvin to show up," Ryan said with a smile.
"I am not mighty, please," Melvin mumbled. "Can I at least get a glass of wine, Matthew?"
Matthew frowned. "You did not reply to my greeting. Why should I be the one to get you a glass of wine?"
"Because you are closer to the bottle of wine," Melvin replied. "Be a good friend and fill up my glass." Matthew scoffed but said nothing.
"I will get you the wine," David spoke up for the first time. "Here you are."
Melvin took the glass of wine from David and muttered a thank you, before sipping from it. "What have you guys been up to without me?" He asked, dropping his glass cup on the table. "Women," Ryan answered. "Beautiful women with great physiques. Do you want me to get you..."
"He doesn't need that. He is married for crying out loud." David answered.
"He doesn't look married to me," Matthew answered. "His lifestyle hasn't changed a bit. I feel for the woman he married. She is such a beautiful soul with a good brain. Do you know the saying of beauty with a brain? It's referring to her." David nodded. "I heard she won so many contracts in the last few months. She is good at what she does."
"But that doesn't change the fact that she doesn't deserve our friend," Ryan replied.
"What is that supposed to mean?" David asked.
"I would like to know too," Matthew answered.
"Come on. You both know what I am talking about. Her background is a no for me. She doesn't belong to the same class as him. And her method of work..." Ryan shook his head. "She is too aggressive."
"How?" Matthew asked, his arms folded.
"It's a do-or-die affair for her when it comes to getting a contract. It doesn't matter what way she uses." Ryan answered.
David shrugged. "She hasn't hurt anyone with her method, has she?".
Ryan shrugged but said nothing; he knew that though her method could be aggressive at times, it was at times the best.
"Ryan, you might not like her method of approach but that doesn't change the fact that she has brought nothing but progress to the company and she hasn't hurt anyone yet. That is what matters. Melvin, you should treat her better."
Melvin stared at Matthew but said nothing.
"Melvin, I am sure you know she doesn't deserve you. You do not need her either. You are just keeping her because of your late father's instructions right?" Ryan asked.
David frowned. "You are not suggesting that he divorce her, are you?"
"If he gets the chance he should. He can't keep wasting his time with her. I wished Alexia was with you before your dad died. You would have married her instead." Ryan said. "Ryan, you should not be a bad influence on him. He is married to her. He can't change that."
"He can just divorce her," Ryan said. "Or you make her divorce you."
Melvin had nothing to say to them. As much as he would like to divorce her, he has no right to do that and he can't force her either. He can only hope that she gets to divorce him, herself, or leave after his ex-girlfriend shows up like they had agreed.
David was angry at Ryan's thoughts about Charlotte and how he kept insisting that Melvin get a divorce. Matthew was also angry at how silent Melvin had been about the issue.
It's his marriage life they are talking about here, why should he be silent?
Matthew picked up his glass of wine and sipped. He dropped it on the table. "Tell me, who is ruling the entertainment industry? I have not been able to follow up for a few days now."
He had just changed the topic and everyone seemed to be okay with it.
"It's Moriana Stone," David replied.
"Did you watch the news this morning? I don't think you do." Ryan answered. "Bella has taken over now. She sings better than anyone. What do you think, Melvin?"
"There is no one who sings better than Alexia. You can agree with me that she is leading the industry," Melvin said, his eyes brightening up.
"That is because she is your girlfriend," David said
Matthew smiled. A heated argument had already begun between them, taking their mind off Charlotte. He loves how he has been able to change the topic and get everyone's mood lighted up. "I support Melvin on this. I think Alexia sings better." He replied.
"I know you will," Melvin answered.
