When fate plays its hand Chapter 828
Chapter 0828
Mindy’s ears buzzed, and her mind went blank for a brief moment. The next thing she knew, the world spun around her as she was hoisted onto someone’s shoulder. She got carried away with her head dangling down.
Before they left, Mindy fixed her gaze on the burrow where Nelly was hiding. Their eyes met. Mindy saw panic, fear, and tears in Nelly’s gaze.
At that moment, she didn’t think too much–she didn’t have time to. Instinct alone made
her choose to trust.
She mouthed silently, “Escape and call the police.” However, she was unsure if Nelly could even understand.
Meanwhile, the abductors began to argue among themselves. “We only caught one. What if the other one gets away and alerts the cops? We’re screwed!”
“I bet she didn’t get far. She must still be hiding nearby. Why don’t we search a bit more?”
“No way! Who knows if they already called the police while escaping? We need to switch locations now. We don’t have time to waste.”
“Lucky for us, we caught the rich one. That maid? Forget her. She’s not worth much anyway.”
“True…”
But their leader wasn’t so easily convinced. He ordered Mindy to be set down, then grabbed her hair and yanked her head back. His voice was sharp and menacing as he demanded, “Where’s the other one?”
Mindy spat venomously, “That bitch! She ran off on her own and even stole my diamond necklace and bracelet! I… I swear, as soon as I get home, I’ll have my dad fire her! She’s nothing but a worthless thief! I’ll kill her myself!”
Her furious outburst made the abductors roar with laughter. Did she really think she was ever going back?
If the maid had stolen valuables and fled, she wouldn’t dare involve the police. Feeling reassured, they abandoned any idea of pursuing Nelly.
The group didn’t return to the original warehouse. Instead, they transferred Mindy to a cargo truck, then eventually onto a ship after several detours.
To prevent another escape, they forced her to take a sedative. Under its effects, her limbs grew weak, and her body went limp; she couldn’t even stand. Most of her days blurred into extended periods of unconsciousness, leaving her disoriented and unaware of time or place.

Still, she clung to a sliver of hope.

“I kept thinking that by now, Nelly must have called the police,” Mindy said. “If they started investigating from the warehouse, they would track the abductors‘ escape route. My rescue was only a matter of time.”
Standing under a sky of swirling snow, the glow of the lights illuminated her face. It was pale, almost ethereal, yet her eyes shone with a piercing intensity.
She stepped closer to Nelly, her gaze locking onto hers like a relentless interrogation. Her voice cut through the frigid air, sounding sharp and direct as she asked, “So, Nelly, did you call the police after you escaped?”
Nelly shrank back, retreating step by step until her back hit the cold wall. Her entire body trembled as her expression filled with terror, and no words escaped her lips.
“I’ll take that as a no.” Mindy sighed softly. “Honestly, I suspect that noise wasn’t accidental either. You made it deliberately, didn’t you? Just to lead the abductors to me.
“Of course, you knew it was a gamble–there was always a chance they’d find you instead. Or worse, both of us. But even then, you couldn’t resist rolling the dice, could you? What did I ever do to you? What grudge is so deep that you even wanted me dead?”
At first, Nelly’s gaze darted frantically. Her face was a picture of panic and helplessness. But slowly, she steadied herself as a chilling calmness replaced her fear.
“So, you never lost your memory after all.”
