Unwanted

Chapter 40 - All Fall Down

Wendy’s P.O.V.

When I see the look on Richard’s face, I stand up and try to run out of the room. He grabs me by my hair and throws me to the floor. I look at my mom, but she’s too busy screaming about me having sex with her mate to notice we’re in danger.

“What the fuck do you think you’re doing having sex with your stepfather?” She asks as I stand up. I put on my robe and back away from Richard.

“Mom, he knows you’re sleeping with other men, so don’t try to act like you care.” I try to get her attention, but she just continues to yell. I don’t have time for this. I can tell Richard means exactly what he said.

“What do you want from us? My father is already dead, so you got your revenge on him.” I argue. Mom finally shuts up long enough to listen.

“Your dad drugged my mate to make her sleep with him. She was so ridden with guilt that she killed herself. He took everything from me. My mate and our pup. She was pregnant when she died. He killed my family, so now I’m killing his.” I can’t believe it. I know my mom and dad slept with others. They had also offered me to others to get what they wanted, but I didn’t know they were drugging anyone. I try to shift into my wolf, but nothing happens. I try again, but still nothing. When I try to talk to my wolf, she’s not there. In fact, I haven’t heard her speak in weeks.

“What did you do to my wolf? Why can’t I shift?” I yell at Richard. He shakes his head.

“I didn’t do anything. You did. You know our wolves leave when we do things they don’t like. Your wolf left because of you. Think of everything you’ve done recently and ask yourself if those are deeds of a decent wolf.” I sit on my bed as the realization hits me. He’s right. She did try to stop me a long time ago, but I refused to listen. All I cared about was my greed and desire to be a princess. When my tears fall, Richard laughs.

“It’s all becoming clear now, isn’t it? Well, I still have my wolf, and he’s out for blood.” I watch in horror as Richard shifts into a large dark brown wolf. The rage in his eyes makes me scream. My mom runs to the door, but the wolf grabs her leg and throws her across the room. Before she can stand, he’s on her, tearing her into pieces. I scream, too scared to move at first as the blood flies around me.

I run toward the door, and just as I open it, I feel teeth biting into my back. I cry as I’m pulled back and fall to the ground. The last thing I see is the wolf’s face before I feel his teeth biting into my neck.

Richard’s P.O.V.

After I kill Wendy, I shift back, sit in the middle of the blood and body parts, and cry. I look around at what’s left of Wendy and Peggy, and I feel sick. Leaning over, I vomit. I thought when I killed them, I would feel better, but I just feel broken. I’ve become the monster.

This isn’t going to bring Gail back or get rid of the guilt I feel for letting her go out alone the night she was drugged. I sob as I stand. There’s only one thing left to do.

I walk to my bedroom, open my nightstand drawer, and pull out my gun. There’s one bullet in it, a silver one. My wolf howls in pain, knowing what’s coming, but he knows it’s the right thing to do. I hold the gun to my head and close my eyes, picturing Gail’s sweet face.

“I love you,” I say as I pull the trigger.

Adrian’s P.O.V.

I can’t believe Richard killed Wendy and Peggy before he killed himself. I didn’t know him well, but I’ve seen him around, and he seemed like a decent guy. When the investigators searched the house, they found a letter from Richard’s first mate, Gail. She had written it before she killed herself. After reading about what Cline did to her, I can see why Richard would be filled with rage.

I look over to where Victoria is braiding Raquel’s hair. She had practically adopted her, just like I knew she would. I know she’s anxiously awaiting our grandpups. Logan and Emily’s pup will be here soon. Logan also let us know that Teegan’s in heat, so hopefully, we’ll have a second one on the way. Raquel is a smart girl and strong, too. I think she’s going to make an excellent addition to the family.

My mind starts to wonder to what Logan said about someone in the palace sneaking around. Eric has confirmed that he’s noticed a few things as well, but he doesn’t have anything solid. Sometimes, it’s exhausting being king. I’m looking forward to stepping down and letting Logan and Emily take over.

“What are you so deep in thought about?” Victoria asks as she sits on my lap. We mated over fifty years ago, but I still see her as the young woman I fell in love with long ago. She is as beautiful now as she was the day we met.

“A few things. I was thinking about what made Richard snap. I was also thinking about someone being in the palace who we can’t trust. I don’t like not knowing who I can trust.” I mindlink her so no one else can hear.

“I don’t either. Especially now with Raquel here. I don’t want someone doing something to her to get to us. Eric hasn’t found anything yet?” She mindlinks back as Raquel looks over the books on one of the shelves. That girl is thirsting for knowledge.

“Not yet. Hopefully, he’ll find something soon. It’s lunchtime. Are you ready to eat?” Victoria kisses me and nods.

“Raquel, sweetheart, are you ready for lunch?” She asks her. The girl pulls a book off the shelf and walks over. She looks so much better than when she first arrived.

“Yes, ma’am.” She replies.

“Honey, you can call me Victoria.” She reminds her as she does every day. Raquel looks away and then looks up at my mate shyly.

“Can I call you Grandma?” She almost whispers. Victoria’s tears start falling right away as she hugs her.

“Of course you can, and you can call him Grandpa. Oh, you just made me so happy.” Raquel beams at both of us, and I can’t help smiling. This is what life’s about. Giving love and hope to those who thought they would never have it.

We go to the dining hall and sit down to eat. There are only a few people here, and I don’t recognize most of them. Our drinks are put in front of us, and I take a sip while studying the people at the other tables. They’re not eating; they’re watching us.

“Adrian, I feel funny.” Victoria grabs my hand as the room starts spinning. I look at Raquel as she falls onto the floor. The last thing I see before everything goes black is someone smirking at me. I can’t believe it. He’s the traitor. Why would he do this? I trusted him.
