Chapter 620
Roman, who had been bawling his eyes out, froze at Hera's words. His heart leaped into his throat.
Linda had sent all the bodyguards away before Roman pulled Xavier into the water. It was the perfect time to act.
He had taken action because Aurora said the drug she obtained from the backyard was for her baby. Hence, the Killian family was trying even harder to look into this to find out who the perpetrator was.
Roman felt guilty about it. Xavier had seen him talking to Linda before, so he feared that Xavier would tell others about it.
Roman wanted to give Xavier a warning, but he never expected Hera to appear out of the blue and ruin his plans.
Looking at how terrified Xavier was at the moment, Roman felt a sense of pleasure. However, his glee was short-lived because Hera had started questioning him, and he started to fret.
Hera demanded, "Why don't you tell us why you pretended you didn't know how to swim and dragged Xavier into the water?"
"I-I didn't!" Roman stammered, frightened at how cold and hostile Hera was.
After almost losing his life in the water, he was terrified of Hera. She really had the guts to take his life!
Seeing how frightened Roman was when he faced Hera, Linda quickly stepped in and said, "Stop all that nonsense! You're lying! You kicked Roman away and dragged him underwater! How dare you say that you tried to help Xavier!" "Are you done?" Hera snapped, turning around to glare at Linda. "Why didn't you jump into the water to save him, then?"
Linda stiffened at the question for a while before retorting, "Why, you sure have a way with words, don't you? I might not be able to win this argument, but don't you dare think you can fabricate such lies here in the Killian residence!" "That's enough, Linda!" Karen hollered. "Why did the two of them fall into the water together?"
"Talia?" Gemma called out, glancing at Talia, who was the only witness.
Talia responded, "Mr. Roman and Mr. Xavier got into a fight beside the lake and accidentally fell into the water. I don't know why they got into a fight in the first place. Ms. Linda said she lost the earrings Mr. Rhett gave her in the garden and asked me to look for them." She continued, "When I came back, I saw Mr. Roman stuffing Mr. Xavier's mouth with mud, and then the two of them fell into the lake."
Gemma's eyes turned bloodshot after hearing what Roman did to Xavier. No one knew if she was mad at Roman or simply sympathized with Xavier.
"What do you people have to say?" Karen turned to the bodyguards beside them. "Why didn't any of you try to save Xavier after he fell into
the water? Your job is to ensure the
safety of all the Killians."
The leader of the bodyguards lowered his head, abashed. "We were looking for Ms. Linda's earrings. None of us realized that somebody had fallen into the lake." Feeling everyone's gaze on her, Linda took out a golden earring from her pocket.
"That's right. They found it. The earrings were an anniversary present from Rhett. I lost one of them and started panicking, so I asked the bodyguards to look for it. When they found it, I heard someone's cries and immediately brought them here with me.
To make them less suspicious, she added, "It's strange, though. Talia, why were you the one who brought Xavier here? Where's Marriot?"
Talia was Aurora's caretaker, while Marriot was Xavier's caretaker. Marriot had always stayed by Xavier's side to take care of him.
For some reason, she wasn't here with Xavier today. People would become suspicious of her because such a major incident happened when she wasn't present.
Talia was afraid that Linda would blame her for what happened, so she said, "Marriot asked for leave today. Her daughter-in-law was hospitalized, so she had to go back home to take care of her grandchild. She asked me to look after Mr. Xavier."
"Marriot did ask for leave," said Gemma, her eyes still red.
Marriot and Talia had been working for the Killian family for the longest time. The two of them came from the same town and were good friends.
Besides, Marriot rarely asked for leave. Aurora and Karen were well aware that Marriot asked Talia to watch over Xavier in her stead. So, there wasn't anything strange about it.
The fact that Linda purposely brought this up made it seem like she had other motives.
"I see... " Linda muttered, realizing that she'd made a blunder.
