Chapter 16 This Is So Weird
Henrik never thought Michael would just hang up, leaving him no room to wiggle out.
He was just trying to buy some time and refused to hand over the parchment once he was safely away from the school.
But Michael's quick decision left him freaking out.
And worse, those footsteps behind him were back.
Michael's earlier tips had only bought him a little time from the ghost tailing him.
"What now? Without Michael, I'm toast. That ghost's gonna get me. I don't wanna die. My life's just getting started. With the parchment, I could totally rule this world. No way I'm dying here." Henrik freaked out and started running again, hoping to lose the footsteps behind him.
But it was useless; the footsteps were getting closer.
The darkness around him felt like it was swallowing him whole.
"No, I can't die. I'll give him the parchment. Michael's right. If I'm dead, knowing more won't help. Plus, I already get the gist of the future info. The parchment isn't as big a deal for me." Facing death, nothing seemed worth holding onto.
Henrik's hand shook as he grabbed his phone and redialed David's number.
The call went through.
"I'll give you the parchment, just get me outta here," he blurted out before the other side could speak.
Michael's voice came through. "Drop the parchment on the ground and I'll come get it."
Without thinking, Henrik pulled out a stack of dark brown paper from his pocket and tossed it on the ground.
"I did it. Help me, I don't wanna die."
Michael said, "I'll show you how to lose the ghost. Go right."
"Okay, thanks." Henrik, panicking, followed Michael's directions.
"Go right again," Michael continued.
Henrik did as told, and it worked like a charm.
The footsteps behind him started to fade and eventually disappeared. Henrik was both shocked and thrilled, knowing he was safe for now.
Michael put down the phone, a cold smirk on his face. He stopped and watched Henrik stumble around in the woods ahead, looking both shocked and thrilled, which he found hilarious. The footsteps behind Henrik weren't a ghost; it was him.
Henrik was terrified of ghosts and couldn't see through the Ghost Realm. He didn't know the person following him was just a regular guy.
"Is this the parchment with future info?" Michael picked up the thing from the ground.
The brown leather was soft and kinda cool, like it had just come out of a freezer, giving off a creepy vibe.
As soon as he touched it, the eye on the back of his hand opened, glowing faintly red.
'This isn't parchment, it's human skin and something's seriously off,' Michael thought, shocked.
After opening it, a line of text appeared on the parchment.
"My name is Henrik. By the time you read this, I'll be dead. Don't freak out, I'm you from ten years in the future, using a special method to send you this info. Pay close attention to what comes next." "Ghosts are real, no joke. By the time you read this, it'll be too late. You'll be at least six months behind other Ghost Handlers."
"Watch out for your classmate Michael. He's a nightmare in the future. He killed me, so you gotta take him out first, or you're toast. Remember, kill Michael."
"On June 20th, during evening study, you'll meet an Interpol agent named Nikolai. He'll drop some crucial knowledge on you. Nikolai's a Ghost Handler, codenamed Ghost Baby Nikolai, but he's just passing through, so don't get too attached." "Be wary of the Ghost Baby that comes out of him. In a few months, it'll grow. Best to steer clear, or you're dead meat."
"You gotta join Interpol ASAP. Remember it: gold, paper. Stay away, escape. Ghost."
As Michael read this, the writing on the parchment started to blur and fade.
Key info was being wiped out by some force, vanishing right before his eyes. The once-packed notes turned into a blank sheet.
Like characters on a computer screen, they disappeared one by one.
Michael hadn't even gotten anything useful before the writing, which held future info, completely vanished.
"What the hell is going on?" He frowned, flipping the parchment back and forth.
Yep, all the writing was gone without a trace.
Faced with this weirdness, Michael couldn't help but think of a movie he'd seen. If the past changed, the future changed too.
Could it be that by taking Henrik's parchment, he made the future him erase the traces?
But before Michael could think too long, new stuff started to appear on the parchment.
Bit by bit, it showed up, like an invisible person was writing.
"My name is Michael. By the time you read this, I'll be dead. I'm you from ten years in the future, using a special method to send you this info." Seeing this, Michael freaked out, staring at the parchment in his hand, "What the hell is this?"
This definitely wasn't just a parchment with future info.
He could feel the creepiness of this human skin. The writing that appeared earlier wasn't erased by future Henrik but by the skin itself.
It had changed owners and was erasing the old info, now generating Michael's info.
Michael thought, 'Don't trust this thing. It can't be kept.'
Michael's eyes flickered, feeling an unknown fear.
He looked around, wanting to chuck the human skin into the sewer to get rid of it forever.
But new writing appeared on the parchment, "Don't throw me away. I can help you."
"Without me, you're dead, you're dead."
Soon, all the writing disappeared, leaving only, "Keep me."
The words repeated, in all sizes, covering the entire piece of human skin.
