Chapter 2221
Chapter 2221
"But..." Renee insisted.
"This is worth it. I was able to gain Benjamin's trust and calm his anger, which in turn helped us leave. I would've done the same thing again without hesitation."
Liam looked relaxed and sounded casual, as if he didn't have a close brush with death. Rather, he treated the whole thing like a game he nearly got disqualified from and in turn rewarded for. The result was worth it. He took everything as an exciting adventure rather than a life-threatening incident.
"Oh, you're always so casual. What do you mean, worth it? If that knife reached your heart or the doctor wasn't skillful enough, you would've been killed. And I... I might have to watch you die just because I left things to chance!" Renee yelled.
She couldn't dwell on what had happened. The memory chilled her blood, and she hated herself for being so scheming.
Renee could feel herself changing. Before, she was direct, bold, straightforward, and did everything she could for the sake of justice. Now, she had turned into an overly cautions coward.
She hated this version of herself, but she could only live with it since she was afraid of changes...
"Okay, stop overthinking. Even if the process was full of twists and turns, the result is good enough," Liam said positively. He was optimistic, and tried to console Renee and Leia. "Get ready and pack up your things. When I recover, we can ride an exclusive plane home."
After staying at a fort full of violent people for such a long time, he got affected by them. For a moment, he became a cruel and heartless person who could do anything to achieve his goals. He also believed he would never leave that place. He acted like Mateo, trying to win people over, full of schemes-all just to gain more power.
However, Renee and Leia's appearance made him suddenly regain his wits and revert to his usual self after being negatively affected.
He still yearned for an ordinary world, and desired to get out of there. He no longer wanted to have anything to do with that place-except for...
Suddenly, Amber's face appeared in his mind, filling him with disappointment.
Renee caught Liam's disappointment and hit the nail on the head. "Are you going to leave just like that? What about Amber?"
"She's going to lead her life. It's none of my business," Liam said, his tone casual and indifferent.
He knew he and Amber belonged to two different worlds. They should never have anything to do with each other. Previously, he was forced to agree to marry her. Even so, he always reminded himself not to take it seriously. If not, he could never leave the fort.
Renee could sense Liam lying to himself and tried to get to the bottom of his heart. "None of your business? You blocked the knife for her! You weren't such a great person, either." "Well, you know now," Liam replied, ignoring her. He didn't want to face that question.
He had no idea what he felt about Amber, but he knew he would be doomed if he stayed and let his feelings for her grow.
Amber was just an accident in his life. He had lost control of himself since he risked his life to save her. He needed to stop and take care not to lose control of himself again.
