The Palace Beast

Chapter 94 - Unexpected

Ramsey leads the way to the castle. He was riding in front followed by Bonnie with John riding beside her. The rest of the knights were riding behind John and Bonnie.

The castle was built by the late King because he was a person of importance and has wealth. He could afford to build a large and imposing castle that rivaled the royal castles. The courtyard which is called a bailey was protected by a ditch and a palisade, strong timber fence. The entrance was protected by a lifting bridge. Inside the bailey were stables, workshops, and a chapel. The motte was the final refuge in this castle.

As they got inside, Ramsey mounted down from his horse, followed by Bonnie and John. "The King will be pleased to see you. Follow me," said Ramsey.

John brought his mouth close to Bonnie's ear and then whispered to her, "Is like he doesn't know your brother has been trying to kill you."

"I'm not sure he or anyone else knows."

"Then be ready for anything because I won't let any harm befall you."

Approaching the throne hall of the king, the entrance door was shut. The entrance door was made of thick wood. Two guards were standing by the corner fully dressed in their armor with spears and shields.

Seeing this, Ramsey realized the King was seated in a meeting with his council. He turned towards Bonnie, "I'm sorry my Lady, your brother seems to be in a council meeting. Perhaps I could show you around and refresh your memories of what here used to look like."

"Of course, that will be nice."

Ramsey leads the way as he shows Bonnie and John around the castle. Inside the castle walls have a magnificent hall, comfortable chambers, and a beautiful chapel. It's a large castle and has its own fish ponds, orchards, and vineyards, as well as gardens that supplied vegetables and herbs. It also has a small private chapel near the lords' chambers.

After the sightseeing, it was brought to Ramsey's knowledge that the council meeting is over. "Hurry, come with me. It's time for a reunion," said Ramsey as he leads them back to the throne hall.

On getting to the throne hall, the King was about to retire to her chambers when he saw his sister walking into the throne hall. It wasn't hard to recognize her daughter after all these years. A brother can easily recognize his kin whom she has not seen for years.

He wasn't happy seeing Bonnie and neither was Bonnie. He turned and faces Ramsey and yelled, "What is she doing here?" His countenance is of rage burning with fire.

At first, Ramsey was happy that the king could recognize his kin without any introduction. But what he couldn't make sense of was the king wasn't happy seeing Bonnie. He was lost in his thought and couldn't give the king any response but lowered his head slightly.

Bonnie's face flared as she furrows her brows. She approaches her brother with a haughty glare at him, "Why send people to kill me?"

The king brought his face closer to Bonnie, fuming in every step he takes. "If you fail to turn and leave now, I will raise the alarm and they will know what you are," whispered the king.

Their voices can't be heard by John or Ramsey. Ramsey glances at John wondering why the king and the Princess are speaking in such a low tone. 'What could they be talking about? This is not the reunion I expected to see.' His thought was deep that he couldn't hold back his curiosity anymore. He turned towards John and asked sternly, "They are both not happy to see one another, do you know what they are talking about?" "I've no freaking idea."

"What?"

"It means I don't know."

It's now clear to John that people around here find it hard to understand him when he uses certain phrases. They speak plain English but John confuses them with some phase he uses.

The verbal argument between the King and Bonnie is getting fierce as Bonnie grabs her brother by the arm. This calls for concern as Ramsey quickly made his way towards them. "My Lady, you will let go of the King' arm now, please." "Not until he tells me why he hates me so much," Bonnie glances at Ramsey still holding her brother's arm and almost twisting it to hurt him.

"I understand how you feel for him not coming to look for you over the years but I am sworn to protect him and you are hurting his arm. I don't want to use force on you. Please let him go, for the sake of your father, King Gilbert." The love Bonnie shared with her father is pure unlike what she's getting from her brother now. Her heart is beginning to grow cold with him just like it was with her mother. If her father was alive, perhaps he wouldn't have banished her and sending men to kill her. She accepted her banishment but not being hunted for.

Remembering the moments she shared with her father, while she was a child, tears rolled down her cheek as she slowly unhands her brother.

Rubbing her arm, he glared at Bonnie. His heart continued to race rapidly, "You and your friend are not welcomed here. Turn and leave." Turning to face Ramsey, he continued, "See to it they leave and never come back." This order was harsh and Ramsey couldn't understand why such decree. He expected them both to be happy seeing each other and not wanting to tear one another apart in the fit of their rage.

He couldn't resist the King' decree. He slightly lowered his head, "Yes Lord King, I will see to it." Turning to face Bonnie, Ramsey said in a sad tone, "My Lady, you need to come with me, please."

Bonnie took a few steps towards her brother, "This isn't over. I have drive pleasure seeing you have no remorse sending people after me, you are worst than the creatures you claim to hunt."

Ramsey still can't make sense of what's happening and didn't bother to ask because is against the knights' creed to question the King or his successor after he has passed a decree. He kept his peace but was deeply bothered by what was happening. He doesn't want to see Bonnie be put away by her own brother for no just reason.

John who has patiently been watching couldn't be calm anymore. He angrily makes his way towards Bonnie. His anger wasn't for Bonnie but her brother who have ordered her to leave. "We shouldn't have come here," he said. "I know. It's just a waste of time. Please take me out of here."

As John held Bonnie's hand to walk out of the throne hall, a loud terrifying screams broke the silence of the moment followed by the barking of the faraway dogs.

"What's going on?" asked the King as she glances at Ramsey feeling terrified.
