The Palace Beast

Chapter 3 - Urgent Matters

The king's matter is urgent. Prince Eliot understands this. Without giving thought to finding Prince Oswald, he left with his men at once, just like Prince Damon did.

His horse and that of his men galloped down the rocky roads. They rode furiously as if they were trying to catch up with someone.

At the palace of Maxis, the princess has been looking everywhere for them. None of them told her he was leaving. When she got word from the guards at the tower that they had seen Prince Damon and Prince Eliot leave with their men, her face turned pale. The corners of her mouth drew downwards.

"Not even a kiss from the princes to melt my heart?" she grumbled.

Her mind raced with thoughts of the princes. She pictured all of them on the same bed with them all at once. Her thoughts flew wild as she continued to imagine what it could be to be in their arms all at once. Princess Bonnie's thoughts were suddenly interrupted by the voice of her father. "So, where did we stop?" he said from behind, startling her.

She flicked around with haste and beheld her father standing in front of her. His face looked mean and furious. Her heart raced inside her chest. "Uhm... Uh... I don't remember." she stammered and scratched her pointed noise. Since the day dawned, she had been trying to dodge her father ever since he brought up the conversation about why she left the palace. That was the conversation they had been having before the nobles assembled. "I still remember," he said, scowling at her. "Tell me, what made you leave this palace."

"Father, we have a lot to worry about and not..."

"Silence!" the king roared at her, forgetting she was the princess and her daughter. His face fired up with indignation. "Do you know how many knights were killed because you led them out?"

The king's face hardened against his daughter. This conversation he had been eager to have since she returned barely alive. Losing her will take a lot out of him.

Realizing how angry her father had become, she didn't want to stir him up with more ire. She hastily lowered her head and squeezed out a few words that could turn down his ire. "I am sorry, father. Forgive me."

King Gilbert breathed a sigh. His chin was still tightened. "I will let this slide," he said. "But promise me it won't happen again."

She raised her head toward King Gilbert. "I promise," she said in a quaky voice. She wasn't even sure of the words she said and whether she could keep to it.

"Come here," King Gilbert said, spreading his arms.

The princess approached as she went straight into her father's arms. His dominant arms hovered on her as he hugged her closely to himself.

"You are forgiven, my sweet child."

"Thank you, father," she said in a tiny little voice.

Their moment of bonding was suddenly interrupted by the king's commander. After a fit of coughing to get the king's attention, Commander Gil opened his mouth to speak. "Forgive me Lord King, Prince Oswald seeks audiences with you."

"Prince Oswald?" Princess Bonnie's eyes widened with curiosity. She breaks the hug and turned toward Commander Gil. "Where is he?"

The king pointed with haste to his commander, "You will not speak to her." He didn't want her to get in the drama with the princes at this time. Maxis is sober and has enough already at their table. Turning toward his daughter, he frowns at her. "He seeks audience with me, not you."

Her father's words hurt her feelings. Without a word to her father, she turned and left his presence.

The king cast his gaze back on his commander and demanded him to take him to the prince.

"Lord King," Prince Oswald said as his cheeks flushed with a fake smile. "I am glad you..."

The king couldn't let him finish his sentence. He pushed back his words with haste, "I thought you left with your brothers?" he said, scowling at him.

Prince Oswald smirked. "Don't worry, I will be on my way at once," he said as he approached the king. "I seek audience with you to remind you of one thing."

"What would that be?" the king stared with wide eyes.

"I saved your daughter from those vicious creatures and brought her back safe to Maxis. Just know that Lord King."

No one suspected him to be one of those vicious creatures. Fully dressed in his royal mantle, he's ready to head back to Wex. The mess he put up last night is yet to be figured out.

"I know you saved my daughter and for that I thank you." King Gilbert focused his gaze on him and continued with an unexpected question. "Is there anything else you seek of the king, perhaps a reward?"

Prince Oswald snickered to himself. "Perhaps you should give me her hand in marriage." He spoke boldly without fear of the king's reaction.

His words came to the king unexpectedly and left him pausing and thought to himself for a moment.

He raised his head toward Prince Oswald, "I have decided to let my daughter pick her groom and not the other way round. It's left for her to decide who she wants to spend the rest of her life with and not me." Prince Oswald's nostrils flared at the king's response. He is feeling fingers of rage running down his entire body to trigger the beast in him.

"I risked my life and saved her. She should be mine and not..."

"I understand how you feel," King Gilbert said, interrupting Prince Oswald. "My daughter is old enough to make a pick of her choice of groom. If you love her like you have always professed, respect that." The fire of rage was burning slowly in Prince Oswald's heart. If he didn't put it off, he would transform and take on the king and everything around him. He gnawed and glared at the king.

"I will be on my way now." There was a trace of indignation in his voice.

As he walked straight to the door, he shoved past the king's commander as he continued to grumble. His eyes glowed red.
