The Lycan King’s Secret Child: Chapter 12
The sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows across the forest that surrounded the cottage. Inside, the air was thick with tension as Amelia, Xander, Seraphine, and Marcus gathered around the worn wooden table. Maps and ancient texts were scattered before them, illuminated by the flickering light of candles.
Amelia: ‘So, it’s true then? They believe Liam is the key to some prophecy?’
Seraphine nodded solemnly.
Seraphine: ‘The Prophecy of the Twin Moons. It speaks of a child born of two worlds, possessing the power to unite or destroy.’
Xander: ‘And the rival factions think Liam is that child?’
Marcus: ‘Yes. Word has spread quickly. They’re convinced that controlling him will grant them unparalleled power.’
Amelia’s eyes filled with worry as she glanced toward the adjacent room where Liam slept peacefully.
Amelia: ‘We can’t let them near him.’
Xander: ‘Agreed. We need to strengthen our defenses and come up with a plan.’
Marcus leaned forward, his expression earnest.
Marcus: ‘I’ve reached out to some old contacts. There are those who oppose the factions and are willing to help.’
Seraphine traced a symbol on one of the texts.
Seraphine: ‘We can set up protective wards around the cottage, but they’ll only hold for so long against a concentrated attack.’
Amelia clenched her fists.
Amelia: ‘Why can’t they just leave us alone? He’s just a child.’
Xander placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
Xander: ‘Because they’re afraid of what he represents—a change in the balance of power.’
Suddenly, a faint noise echoed from outside—a rustling in the trees.
Marcus: Whispering ‘Did you hear that?’
They exchanged tense glances. Xander moved silently to the window, peering into the darkness. Shadows shifted among the trees.
Xander: ‘We’re not alone.’
Amelia’s heart pounded.
Amelia: ‘Are they here already?’
Seraphine closed her eyes, concentrating.
Seraphine: ‘I sense multiple presences—surrounding us.’
Xander turned to the group, his voice firm.
Xander: ‘We need to move Liam to a safer location.’
Marcus nodded.
Marcus: ‘There’s an old sanctuary beneath the cottage—a hidden cellar. It should mask his presence.’
Amelia hurried to Liam’s room, gently waking him.
Amelia: ‘Liam, sweetheart, we need to go somewhere safe.’
He rubbed his eyes sleepily.
Liam: ‘What’s happening, Mommy?’
Amelia: ‘Just a little adventure, okay?’
He nodded, trusting her completely.
As they guided Liam to the cellar door hidden beneath a rug, the sounds outside grew louder—footsteps, whispers, the creak of branches.
Seraphine: ‘They’re closing in.’
Xander helped Amelia and Liam descend the narrow steps into the cellar. It was dark and cool, lined with stone walls etched with ancient runes.
Amelia: ‘Will we be safe here?’
Marcus: ‘For now. The runes will conceal you.’
Xander prepared to close the door.
Xander: ‘I need to stay up top. Buy us some time.’
Amelia: Grabbing his arm ‘Be careful.’
He gave her a reassuring smile.
Xander: ‘I will. Stay with Liam.’
He closed the cellar door, and the darkness enveloped them. Amelia held Liam close as they listened to the muffled sounds above.
—
Above ground, Xander, Marcus, and Seraphine took positions near the windows and doors. Figures emerged from the shadows—cloaked individuals with determined expressions.
Lead Figure: ‘We know the boy is here. Hand him over, and no harm will come to you.’
Xander stepped forward, his voice steady.
Xander: ‘You’ll have to get through us first.’
The intruders exchanged glances before spreading out, attempting to encircle the cottage.
Marcus: Muttering ‘They’re trying to find a weakness in the wards.’
Seraphine began to chant softly, reinforcing the protective barriers. A shimmering glow surrounded the cottage, but it flickered under the strain.
Xander: ‘We can’t hold them off forever.’
Suddenly, a loud crack echoed as one of the intruders unleashed a bolt of energy, striking the barrier and causing it to waver.
Lead Figure: ‘The prophecy will be fulfilled, one way or another!’
Inside the cellar, Liam looked up at Amelia, his eyes reflecting fear and determination.
Liam: ‘Mommy, I can help.’
Amelia: ‘No, Liam. It’s too dangerous.’
Liam: ‘But they’re here because of me. I don’t want anyone to get hurt.’
Amelia struggled with her emotions.
Amelia: ‘I know, but you’re just a child.’
He took her hand.
Liam: ‘I can try to make them go away.’
Before she could respond, the cellar door began to glow faintly. Liam’s eyes shimmered with a soft light.
—
Above, the attackers pressed harder. The barrier was weakening, cracks forming as bursts of energy struck repeatedly.
Marcus: ‘They’re breaking through!’
Xander braced himself.
Xander: ‘Get ready.’
Just as the barrier shattered, a wave of light surged from beneath the cottage, emanating from the cellar. The attackers were thrown back, shielding their eyes.
Lead Figure: ‘What is this power?’
Seraphine’s eyes widened.
Seraphine: ‘It’s Liam!’
The ground trembled as the light intensified, forming a protective dome around the entire property.
Amelia held Liam as he channeled the energy, his face serene yet focused.
Amelia: ‘Liam, what’s happening?’
Liam: ‘I can feel them. They’re angry and afraid.’
Above ground, the attackers regrouped, hesitating.
Second Figure: To the leader ‘We didn’t anticipate this. Perhaps we should retreat.’
The lead figure scowled.
Lead Figure: ‘No! We can’t leave without the boy.’
But as they attempted to advance, the light repelled them, forming an impenetrable barrier.
Xander watched in awe.
Xander: ‘He’s protecting us.’
Seraphine placed a hand on Xander’s shoulder.
Seraphine: ‘His power is extraordinary, but he can’t maintain this for long.’
Marcus nodded.
Marcus: ‘We need to find a way to end this standoff.’
Suddenly, a distant horn sounded—a signal. The attackers exchanged alarmed glances.
Lead Figure: ‘The others are coming. We need to move.’
They began to withdraw into the forest.
Xander called after them.
Xander: ‘This isn’t over!’
As the last of the intruders disappeared into the darkness, the light surrounding the cottage dimmed. Xander rushed back inside and opened the cellar door.
Amelia looked up, relief flooding her face.
Amelia: ‘Are they gone?’
Xander: ‘For now. Liam, are you okay?’
Liam nodded wearily.
Liam: ‘I’m just tired.’
Seraphine examined him gently.
Seraphine: ‘He needs rest. Using that much energy is draining.’
They settled Liam into his bed, and he fell asleep almost instantly.
Amelia and Xander returned to the main room, where Marcus awaited them.
Marcus: ‘We can’t stay here. They’ll be back, and next time with greater numbers.’
Amelia sighed heavily.
Amelia: ‘Where can we go? We seem to be running out of safe places.’
Seraphine unfolded an old map on the table.
Seraphine: ‘There is one place—the Sanctuary of Eldergrove. It’s hidden deep within the ancient forest, protected by powerful enchantments.’
Xander: ‘I’ve heard of it. Few know its exact location.’
Marcus: ‘Do you think they’ll take us in?’
Seraphine: ‘They will if they believe Liam is the prophesied one.’
Amelia frowned.
Amelia: ‘But that’s why we’re being hunted. Won’t bringing him there put him in more danger?’
Seraphine shook her head.
Seraphine: ‘The Sanctuary is neutral ground. It’s a place of learning and protection. If we explain the situation, they may help us understand the prophecy and how to protect Liam.’
Xander considered this.
Xander: ‘It’s risky, but it may be our best option.’
Amelia looked toward Liam’s room.
Amelia: ‘We have to do whatever it takes to keep him safe.’
Marcus rolled up the map.
Marcus: ‘Then it’s decided. We’ll leave at first light.’
—
As dawn approached, they gathered their belongings. The air was thick with anticipation and uncertainty.
Liam stirred awake, rubbing his eyes.
Liam: ‘Are we going somewhere?’
Amelia smiled gently.
Amelia: ‘Yes, sweetheart. We’re going on a journey.’
He looked at her thoughtfully.
Liam: ‘Is it because of the bad people?’
She nodded slowly.
Amelia: ‘But where we’re going, they’ll have a hard time finding us.’
He reached for her hand.
Liam: ‘Okay.’
They set off, the forest canopy closing above them as they ventured deeper into the unknown. The path was winding, and the forest grew denser with each step.
Hours turned into days as they navigated the treacherous terrain. Along the way, they felt eyes watching them—the forest itself seemed alive.
One evening, as they set up camp, Seraphine approached Amelia.
Seraphine: ‘We’ve made good progress. We should reach Eldergrove soon.’
Amelia nodded, though weariness showed on her face.
Amelia: ‘I hope this isn’t all for nothing.’
Seraphine placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.
Seraphine: ‘Have faith. The Sanctuary holds many secrets. Perhaps we’ll find the answers we seek.’
Meanwhile, Xander and Marcus kept watch at the edge of the camp.
Marcus: ‘Do you think we’re being followed?’
Xander scanned the darkness.
Xander: ‘Hard to say. But I can’t shake the feeling that something—or someone—is tracking us.’
Just then, a distant howl echoed through the trees. They exchanged tense glances.
Marcus: ‘Wolves?’
Xander: ‘No. That was a signal.’
Back at the camp, Amelia and Seraphine heard it too.
Amelia: ‘What was that?’
Seraphine’s eyes narrowed.
Seraphine: ‘We’re not alone.’
Before they could react, figures emerged from the shadows, encircling the camp. Unlike the previous attackers, these individuals wore elaborate robes adorned with ancient symbols.
A tall woman stepped forward, her eyes glowing faintly.
Woman: ‘Travelers, you trespass on sacred ground.’
Seraphine stepped forward cautiously.
Seraphine: ‘We seek the Sanctuary of Eldergrove. We mean no harm.’
The woman studied them intently.
Woman: ‘Why do you seek the Sanctuary?’
Amelia held Liam protectively.
Amelia: ‘We need help. My son is in danger.’
The woman’s gaze shifted to Liam, her expression unreadable.
Woman: ‘The child…’
Xander moved closer.
Xander: ‘Please. He’s being hunted because of a prophecy.’
The woman exchanged glances with her companions.
Woman: ‘Very well. You will come with us. The Elders will decide your fate.’
Relief mingled with apprehension as they gathered their belongings.
Amelia: Whispering to Xander ‘Do you think we can trust them?’
Xander: ‘We don’t have much choice.’
As they followed the group deeper into the forest, the trees parted to reveal a hidden valley bathed in ethereal light. Structures built into the trees and rocks glowed softly, and the air hummed with ancient energy.
Liam looked around in wonder.
Liam: ‘It’s beautiful.’
Amelia felt a glimmer of hope.
Amelia: ‘Maybe we’ve finally found a safe haven.’
But as they approached the central hall, a sense of unease settled over them. The Elders awaited, their expressions solemn.
The leading woman gestured toward the center of the chamber.
Woman: ‘Stand before the Council.’
As they stepped forward, one of the Elders spoke in a deep, resonant voice.
Elder: ‘You bring the child of prophecy to our midst. Do you understand the implications?’
Seraphine bowed respectfully.
Seraphine: ‘We seek guidance and protection.’
The Elder’s eyes narrowed.
Elder: ‘The prophecy speaks of a choice—unity or destruction. The child’s path is yet unclear.’
Amelia tightened her grip on Liam’s hand.
Amelia: ‘He is just a boy. He deserves a chance to choose his own destiny.’
The Elders conferred among themselves before the lead Elder spoke again.
Elder: ‘Very well. He may stay, but under our watch. We must determine the nature of his power.’
Xander stepped forward.
Xander: ‘We won’t leave his side.’
The Elder regarded him coolly.
Elder: ‘That is not for you to decide.’
The atmosphere grew tense.
Suddenly, a loud explosion echoed from outside, followed by shouts and the clash of weapons.
An acolyte burst into the chamber.
Acolyte: ‘Elders! The enemy has breached the outer defenses!’
Panic spread through the hall.
Amelia: ‘How did they find us?’
The Elder’s expression darkened.
Elder: ‘It seems your arrival has led them here.’
Accusations hung in the air.
Xander: ‘We had no idea they were tracking us.’
The Elder raised a hand.
Elder: ‘There is no time. We must protect the Sanctuary.’
He turned to the guards.
Elder: ‘Secure the child.’
Amelia protested.
Amelia: ‘No! You can’t take him!’
Guards moved to separate them.
As chaos erupted within and outside the chamber, Liam’s eyes glowed once more.
Liam: ‘Stop!’
Everyone froze as a surge of energy rippled through the air.
The Elder looked at Liam with a mix of fear and awe.
Elder: ‘The power… it’s beyond what we imagined.’
Outside, the sounds of battle intensified. The rival factions had arrived, determined to seize Liam at any cost.
Amelia’s heart pounded as she realized they were trapped, with enemies on all sides and uncertain allies.
Would they find a way to escape the impending onslaught, or would Liam’s fate be decided by forces beyond their control?
