Chapter 25: Mordred's Death
After returning, Zana turned to creating traps to use on Mordred. Virgil continued to stay by Grace’s side, turning to her for comfort at the loss of his parents.
When Zana said that she had finally found Mordred, and wanted Virgil to help her, he was hesitant at first to leave Grace. But he agreed to go, so they could give their parents the justice they deserved. Grace stayed behind as she was four months pregnant and beginning to show.
Blue brought Virgil and Zana back to Lilith’s pocket universe where they had rescued Grace from Morgana not that many years ago.
Zana set up a trap for Mordred, laying an iron net on the ground, one that could not be broken by anyone but her.
Blue then used her telepathic link with her siblings and parents to lure Mordred to where the net was while Zana, Virgil, and her all hid in some nearby bushes. It didn’t take long for him to respond, coming out of the forest surrounding them in the form of a big black wolf. He looked kind of like Raven except his coat was plain black without an indigo shine to it. His eyes were also more of a violet color than that of purple.
Mordred stepped onto the net and set off the trap, the net wrapping itself around him and lifting him up into the air. Mordred didn’t transform, but he did scratch, bite, and pull at the net though it continued to hold.
Zana and Virgil stood up from their hiding places and approached Mordred. When he saw them, he stopped fighting. Zana was smirking, looking at him triumphantly while Virgil was a bit more hesitant.
“You can try all you want but only I can take down this net. Nobody gets away with killing and hurting my family.” Zana spat at him, a fiery tear managing to escape and fall down her cheek though she chose to ignore it.
"You can’t kill me with your magic and fire." Mordred said, no fear in his eyes.
“Then it’s a good thing I brought Virgil.” Zana turned and looked at the New King.
Virgil hesitantly pulled Excalibur free from its scabbard at his side. Even though he had been trained from birth, knowing that someday the enchanted sword would be his, it felt wrong to him to be holding it. To him it would always be his father’s sword.
Mordred leaned his face against the net, looking at Virgil, getting as close to him as he could.
"Your hands are shaking. Tell me, King, how does it feel to be holding your father’s sword?" Mordred showed off his teeth in a mockery of a smile, making Virgil wonder if he could read his mind.
“Shut up.” Virgil shouted, tears gathering in his eyes. “You have no right to speak of them.”
"Alright then, how about Jynx? You know, the first time Mother let me take her she didn’t have any scars. Smooth and unblemished skin.” Mordred said, preying on Virgil’s other weakness, Grace.
Virgil tightened his hold on Excalibur, his knuckles turning white. “Don’t you dare bring her into this!”
“Just kill him!” Zana shouted, her hair on fire as she looked at Virgil, glaring at him.
"Tell me, did she ever wake up in the middle of the night screaming my name? I bet she did. Too bad I only had time for one kiss."
“SHUT UP!” Virgil screamed, plunging Excalibur into Mordred’s chest.
Mordred’s eyes widened drastically as he transformed into a man. Virgil’s own eyes widened in fear. He quickly pulled Excalibur free, dropping the bloodstained sword to the ground. Mordred’s body fell limp against the net as the life faded from his eyes. Virgil’s legs gave out beneath him and he fell to his knees.
Despite being trained to fight and to protect his kingdom, Virgil had never killed a man before. Mordred may have done terrible things, but taking someone else’s life is always hard.
“Take care of the body. I’m going to see if I can find Morgana or Mercury. Maybe they’re hiding around here somewhere.” Zana said, leaving Virgil alone after loosening the net.
