Chapter 80 Returning Late at Night
Sophia rolled out of bed to check what was going on, but as soon as she cracked the door open, she caught a glimpse of Michael's back as he left. Furious, she hurled the vase from the nearby cabinet. By the time Michael got downstairs and into his car, he realized he hadn't said a word to Sophia. She was probably going to cry again.
Michael thought about calling Sophia to explain, but he picked up the phone and then put it down, in no mood to get an earful of her begging. He was torn about whether to go back or not, feeling all kinds of conflicted.
He also wondered if Emily was okay after her fall at the hospital. With all these mixed feelings, he decided to shoot Sophia a text instead.
Michael: [Something came up at work, had to leave early. Get some rest.]
When Sophia saw the text, she wanted to throw her phone too. She couldn't believe her carefully planned car accident had been brushed off so easily. Was it not serious enough? Or had Michael already lost all feelings for her? No, she couldn't accept that.
Sophia kept telling herself that Michael loved her; otherwise, he wouldn't come running every time she called.
Emily was too restless to sleep. She kept replaying the call Sophia made to Michael in her head. The more she thought about it, the more agitated she got. She placed her hand on her belly. Only the baby inside her could calm her down.
In the darkness, Emily's agitated expression softened into a gentle smile. "Baby, Daddy doesn't like me. He likes another woman, but I'll let him go. When the time comes, will you leave with me? I'll always love you."
Today, Daniel had secretly arranged an ultrasound for her. The baby was very healthy. She was really happy, and thinking about it eased the frustration she felt about Michael leaving that night.
Emily touched her belly, feeling the warmth under her hand. Soon, the anger Michael had stirred up disappeared, and she finally fell asleep.
Emily was jolted awake by the sound of the door opening. She knew she was in a hospital and no one else would come, but she was still startled. In the darkness, she opened her eyes and saw a familiar outline. Emily immediately turned on the bedside lamp.
"Michael?" Emily's mind went blank for a moment. She sat up, looking at him in confusion. "What are you doing here?"
Michael immediately frowned and asked, "This afternoon, the caregiver called me and said you fell. Are you okay?"
Emily looked at his half-hearted concern and sneered, "Do you still have the nerve to care about me? Couldn't Sophia keep you, or didn't she satisfy you?"
It was the first time Emily had spoken so bluntly, hurting both Michael and herself.
Michael's face stiffened as he said, "Emily, do you know what you're saying?"
Emily turned her head away, not thinking there was anything wrong with what she said. It was him who had come to bother her in the middle of the night. After a while, Emily said, "If there's nothing else, you should go back." She had finally fallen asleep, only to be woken up by him. Emily was a bit annoyed.
Michael sat down on a chair, looking at her with lowered eyes, and said, "Go to sleep. I'll stay here with you."
Michael didn't know why, but the beautiful villa with Sophia had just made him anxious and uneasy. But in this dim hospital room, he felt surprisingly calm seeing Emily, without any of that anxiety.
Even though Emily was giving him the cold shoulder, Michael didn't feel like leaving. But with Sophia, every minute felt like an eternity, and he couldn't sit still. He remembered he hadn't always been like this. What had changed?
Emily didn't care. She lay down by herself, and Michael came over to tuck her in. He sat down on the chair next to her. After a long time, Emily said, "Do you want to sleep on the companion bed?"
Michael thought she was asleep and was surprised she was still concerned about where he would sleep. He smiled, then turned off the bedside lamp, plunging the room into darkness. He smiled again and said, "Just sleep. Don't worry about me."
Emily frowned and immediately retorted, "Says who? I just think it's creepy for you to sit by my bed watching me sleep. Go to the companion bed."
Michael didn't argue with her and really went to the companion bed, lying down fully clothed. That night, both of them had a lot on their minds and didn't sleep well.
In the morning, Emily woke up to see Michael standing by her bed, and Ava arrived on time with breakfast. Emily looked at the extravagant breakfast and laughed. "Ava, are you trying to fatten me up by bringing me food every day?" Looking at the VIP room's table filled with at least a dozen breakfast items, Emily was both amused and exasperated.
Ava smiled and said, "Mrs. Smith, what are you talking about? These were all ordered by Mr. Mason Smith. And many of them were brought over by Stella from the old house. Try them."
Michael was looking at his phone next to her. Emily stared at him for a few seconds, and Michael seemed to sense her gaze. He turned the phone towards her and said, "I'm replying to work emails, see?"
Emily felt like he had seen through her thoughts, her face flushed, and she lowered her head, saying, "What are you looking at? I didn't say anything."
Michael just smiled and didn't say anything. After washing up, Emily slowly ate her breakfast.
Michael cooed, "Enjoy yourself with the breakfast. I have a meeting at the office. I'll come back to have lunch with you."
Emily wanted to say, "You don't have to come," but Michael left too quickly for her to say it.
Emily looked at Ava and said, "What's wrong with him? He came to the hospital every day."
Ava laughed and said, "Mrs. Smith, what are you saying? Isn't it good that Mr. Michael Smith comes to the hospital to accompany you every day?"
Emily pouted and said, "I'd rather he didn't come. As long as he gives me 'Lucky' back, he can go wherever he wants. When he's not here, I have a better appetite."
Ava just smiled and said nothing.
Emily didn't expect that shortly after Michael left, an uninvited guest would arrive at her hospital room. Emily put down her phone and looked at Sophia. Emily looked grim.
But Sophia had a smug look on her face. "I heard you are hospitalized? I came to see you."
Emily snorted, "Do you believe what you're saying? Do you not know why I'm in the hospital? Don't pretend to be concerned; it's disgusting."
Sophia's heart went cold. Had Emily told Michael about the incident at the club? But then she thought, even if she had, so what? Michael might not trust her anymore, but that didn't mean he was fond of Emily either.
