Chapter 177 The Haunting Spirit
Michael and Emily spotted Wayne, and man, he looked way more worn out than when they first met him.
Well, who wouldn't be down in the dumps being stuck in a place like this? He brought it on himself, totally deserved it!
Michael kept a straight face when he saw Wayne, 'cause it just reminded him of all the crap Veda went through.
Emily, though, stayed cool. She was the first to speak up. "You've already confessed, so why'd you call us here?"
Wayne slowly lifted his head, staring at Emily with this creepy smirk that made her skin crawl.
Wayne said, "You're pretty, but being with a blind coward like him is a waste."
Emily was totally caught off guard by that.
"What the hell did you just say?" Michael was fuming, and if it weren't for the glass between them, he would've lunged at Wayne and knocked him out. "Enough, Michael!" Emily quickly stopped him and turned back to Wayne, glaring.
To her, this guy had no reason to kidnap Veda and go after Michael if he didn't have some beef with them. It just didn't add up!
Could there be more to this story?
Emily said, "I don't get why you said that. But let me be clear, you kidnapped Veda, so you must've looked into the Smith family, right? If you know how powerful the Smiths are in Emerald City, you should know your days are numbered." "As long as you keep messing with the Smith family, we'll keep coming after you, Wayne. And if you called us here just to say this crap, then you're really pathetic. You're still young, but you'll spend the rest of your life in prison. Your words mean nothing but empty threats to me."
With that, Emily was ready to leave with Michael.
But then Wayne shouted through the glass. "The Smith family has some power in Emerald City, sure, but do you really think you're all-powerful? You'll never know who you've pissed off! Michael, just like your dumb sister, she'll never know who really hurt her!"
The cops, seeing things getting heated, took Wayne away.
Emily dragged an angry Michael back to the car.
Michael yelled, "Why didn't you let me rip into him more? That guy's unbearable. I should've hired the best lawyer in Emerald City to make sure he rots in prison for life! So he can't hurt anyone again!"
Emily frowned, clearly annoyed. "Look, the cops charged him with kidnapping, not murder. Do you really think you have that much pull, Michael? Money isn't everything, and the cops don't work for the Smith family! Get a grip, the Smith family is already under the spotlight, don't make things worse!"
Despite her words, on the way back to the Smith Mansion, Emily couldn't stop thinking about what Wayne had said. "Michael, just like your stupid sister, she'll never know who really harmed her!" According to Wayne, should Veda know something? But Wayne had already confessed to the kidnapping. Could it be, as Michael originally thought, that the real culprit was someone else?
The more Emily thought about it, the more uneasy she felt. As soon as she got home, she headed straight to Veda's room.
Veda was building blocks when Emily walked in. Since the kidnapping, she had become much more composed. She spent most of her time at home, except for occasional outings with friends.
A few days ago, she even told Michael she wanted to work at the Smith Corporation, not wanting to waste her days anymore. Emily thought this was a good thing and decided to support her.
However, all positions at the Smith Corporation were filled, and it would take some time for a suitable one for Veda to open up. To keep Veda from getting bored at home, Emily prepared some building blocks for her.
Building blocks could be calming, with no downsides. Unexpectedly, Veda really enjoyed it and was almost done after just a few days.
Veda looked up and smiled. "Emily, you're back?"
Unlike before, Veda now felt very close to Emily whenever she saw her. She immediately pulled her over to show her the new block house she was building. "How is it? I built it exactly according to the picture, isn't it impressive? I didn't think I'd be good at this. I used to think I was useless, with no hobbies. Now I see, I just lacked cultivation!"
Veda looked at her half-finished block house with joy. "If I could have my own house in the future, that would be great. Not one given by Grandpa or Michael, but one I bought with my own ability."
Seeing this, Emily didn't want to interrupt Veda's beautiful dreams. But that matter... still needed to be discussed.
Emily asked, "Veda, there's something I want to ask you."
To find the real culprit, Emily couldn't care about much. This question had been like a thorn in her heart, impossible to ignore or remove.
Wayne willingly confessed. But Emily, having been through many dangers, didn't want the real culprit to remain hidden.
Veda replied, "Emily, just say it. Seeing you hesitate makes me anxious."
Seeing Veda so straightforward, Emily didn't hold back. She started recalling the days when Veda ran away from home. She wanted to know if Veda had met anyone or experienced anything during those days. Maybe they could find some clues.
In short, Emily didn't believe Wayne was the real culprit. It just didn't add up.
"Those days... let me think." Veda frowned, trying hard to remember.
Emily knew this was painful, so she didn't rush her.
Suddenly, Veda slapped the table, almost knocking over her blocks in excitement.
Seeing this, Emily knew Veda must have remembered something.
She quickly asked, "Who did you remember?"
Veda replied, "Sophia! Emily, I remembered Sophia!"
