Chapter 175 Mrs. Smith's Counterattack
Michael shot back, "Forgiveness can wait. But you just accused my wife without a shred of proof. Don't you think you owe us an explanation? You can't just hit or accuse my wife like that. We're respectable people, and your useless husband
should know better."
His words dripped with sarcasm.
This whole mess could've been sorted out easily.
Emily was puzzled by his intentions.
Worried that this woman might cause trouble for Smith Corporation, Emily stepped in. "Ma'am, I get that you're upset. But making a scene here isn't good for Smith Corporation. If you have issues, talk to us first. Laura hasn't even shown up for work yet, so let's all just calm down."
Emily was trying to be reasonable.
But the woman took it the wrong way and lashed out at Emily. "I know you're Mrs. Smith and you have a high position here. I shouldn't have snapped at you. But don't you think your words are a bit careless? If Mr. Smith cheated, would you still be this calm?"
She then turned to Michael. "Mr. Smith, that woman is from your company. You owe me an explanation, not the other way around. This is unfair to me! Women always get the short end of the stick. I've been married for over twenty years, and now some tramp from your company has taken my husband. Where's the justice in that?"
Emily quickly responded, "We'll talk to the employee involved, but there's no need to make a scene here."
"That's not for sure!" The woman plopped down on a chair, eyeing Michael and Emily with a hint of jealousy.
In front of everyone, she continued, "Mr. Smith, Mrs. Smith, I'm not trying to make things hard for you. But your scandals have been all over the place lately. I heard Mr. Smith is still tangled up with Sophia. This is more dramatic than our situation."
"They say family scandals shouldn't be aired, but yours are public knowledge. No point in hiding anything. You know this stuff better than anyone."
"One bad apple spoils the bunch! Since it's someone from Smith Corporation, you should give an explanation. After all, Smith Corporation is big and wealthy. A little money won't hurt you!"
Michael finally realized this woman wasn't just here to catch a cheater; she was here to extort money.
A young girl wouldn't have much cash. She must be relying on her husband.
This woman wanted compensation from Smith Corporation, which explained her persistence.
Michael said, "No money, just my life. If you can't accept that, you can sue my wife and me for the employee's infidelity."
Michael couldn't believe the craziness of the world.
Today had been a real eye-opener.
In a world full of scoundrels, there were always scoundrel ways. If this kept up, would he and Emily have to take the blame if someone at Smith Corporation committed murder or arson? With that thought, Michael was ready to leave with Emily.
But the woman, not ready to give up, shouted after them. "I've heard the Smith family has a lot of dirty laundry! Looks like it's true. I heard Scarlett is missing, Mason is bedridden, and Ms. Smith had an incident recently. I wonder if it's because of the Smith Corporation president..."
Before she could finish, Emily stormed forward, grabbed a cup of cold water from the table, and splashed it on the woman.
The room went dead silent.
Everyone, including Michael and Andrew, was stunned.
Emily said, "There's no need to drag others into this Smith Corporation employee's mess. I told you to shut up, but you didn't listen. Don't blame me for taking action." Emily's face was fierce.
Michael had never seen her so intimidating. He was genuinely shocked, and so was the woman.
Emily added, "Sit here quietly. We'll have our lawyer talk to you directly. You want compensation? Fine, we'll give it to you. Let's see if you and your useless husband can handle it."
With that, Emily pulled Michael into the president's office without looking back.
Andrew sent the onlookers back to their workstations.
Suddenly, he noticed Nola trying to hide in the crowd.
The situation had been chaotic, and he hadn't noticed her presence.
"Nola." Andrew's face was stern.
Hearing Andrew call her, Nola reluctantly stopped and turned around. "Mr. Anderson..."
Andrew asked, "You were hiding and watching the whole time? What? Did you find it entertaining?"
Nola quickly shook her head. "Of course not! I was just... I was just scared."
She put on a pitiful look, hoping for Andrew's leniency.
Andrew said, "Scared? Fine, you were the only one from the secretary's office there. You knew Mrs. Smith's identity but didn't help. Clearly, you wanted that woman to harm Mrs. Smith. I've been Mr. Smith's assistant for years. Do you think I can't see through you? Is it because of the punishment the other day that you hold a grudge against Mrs. Smith?"
Hearing this, Nola trembled.
But she thought, 'Andrew is just an assistant, not Michael himself. What is there to be afraid of?'
Even if he exposed her intentions, what could he do?
In an instant, Nola straightened her neck and raised her chin, speaking defiantly. "So what? Are you interrogating me now? Mr. Smith hasn't said anything, and you're acting all high and mighty. What, do you have a crush on Mrs. Smith?" Andrew coldly replied, "Whether I like Mrs. Smith or not is none of your business. But you're fired."
