Chapter 157 Visiting the Hospital
After hanging up the phone and heading back to the ward, Evelyn rolled her eyes at Sophia, who was lying on the bed looking all hopeful. "I made the call. Happy now?"
Sophia was munching on an apple, and when she heard that, her eyebrows shot up, and her eyes got all intense. "Yeah, I know you called. But what did Michael say? Is he coming? When's he coming? Was he mad at me?"
Evelyn felt a wave of anger rise up. She marched over, snatched the apple from Sophia's hand, and snapped, "Look at you, so pathetic! How can you be so obsessed with Michael? There are a million ways to win him back, but you really freaked me out. Why did you pretend to be dead? I thought you actually took sleeping pills, but it was just chewing gum!"
Sophia immediately pulled Evelyn closer and made a shushing gesture. Then she cautiously peeked outside the door, making sure no one was listening, and finally relaxed. "Mom, if you don't talk, no one will think you're mute." Even though Evelyn agreed with Sophia's plan to win Michael back, there were a thousand ways to do it, and Sophia chose this one. Men weren't scared of these threats; Sophia was just too impatient.
Evelyn said, "I'm not mute, and Michael's not an idiot! Alright, just rest up."
With that, Evelyn started to leave.
"Where are you going?" Sophia asked, looking up.
Evelyn replied, "What do you think? I'm going to handle things for you. You stay here and play the victim for Michael. If those gossiping nurses catch you, I have to cover for you!"
With that, Evelyn gave Sophia a disdainful look and walked out of the ward.
Seeing this, Sophia's eyelids trembled, and she looked pitiful. Evelyn wasn't her and didn't understand her situation.
Sophia had a feeling she was drifting further away from Michael. The breakup seemed like a way to buffer public opinion, but in reality, it was the end of their relationship. She was desperate and could only use the pretense of suicide to win Michael back.
Michael drove his sports car and soon arrived at the hospital alone. His natural charisma quickly caught the attention of the female nurses and doctors. Some bold ones even approached him directly to ask if he needed help. Michael said, "I want to know which ward Sophia Brown is in."
"I'll check for you." The young nurse blushed immediately after making eye contact with Michael.
Before she could find out, Evelyn, who had just come out of the doctor's office, quickly stepped forward, pulled Michael over, and said with a big smile, "Michael, you're here. Come on, follow me. Sophia's in the ward." Evelyn's early display of joy revealed her inner thoughts to Michael.
Yeah, her daughter attempted suicide, so how could a mother be so happy?
Recalling Emily's words, Michael immediately concluded that Sophia might indeed be faking it.
Following Evelyn into the ward, Michael saw Sophia lying on the bed, looking frail.
Scanning the room, Michael quickly confirmed Emily's words. Sophia was completely unharmed, with no serious injuries.
Now lying in the hospital bed, Sophia was just hooked up to an IV. It didn't look like she had just gone through a terrifying suicide attempt.
Even when asked about Hayden, Evelyn lied, saying he was too busy with work to come.
His daughter was about to commit suicide, and yet the small Brown Corporation had something so important that he couldn't leave?
Thinking of this, Michael sighed and looked at Sophia on the bed. "Sophia, what is going on here?"
As soon as he asked, Michael felt like he was playing along with the act.
He sat down, but because of his tall frame, the chair Evelyn brought quickly distanced itself from the bed. Combined with his domineering aura, the atmosphere became quite awkward.
Seeing this, Sophia's heart raced, and tears followed. "Michael, look at me, I'm so sick. Don't you feel sorry for me? I miss you so much. I can't live without you. I'm really sad. Michael, let's not break up, okay? Even if Emily doesn't divorce you and wants to take over the Smith family's fortune, it's okay. I'm willing to stay by your side. I'm willing to fight alongside you..."
Time passed too quickly. Even some people's psychological worlds were slowly changing.
In the past, when Michael heard these words, he would pity Sophia for their relationship and hate Emily for Sophia's sarcastic remarks.
After all, it was because of past feelings that he was swayed by others' opinions, losing his ability to think for himself.
But now, things had changed. Michael no longer viewed his relationship with Sophia through tinted glasses, and naturally, he wouldn't hate Emily because of Sophia's veiled insults.
Michael began to form his own judgments. Whether Emily was after the Smith family fortune, he, who was being urged to divorce every day, probably knew best.
On the contrary, Sophia's words made Michael feel she had ulterior motives.
So, before Sophia could finish, Michael impatiently interrupted her. "Sophia, I've already explained this to you clearly before. If you didn't listen carefully, it's okay. I'll say it again, but my time is limited. You know, the Smith Corporation has been in turmoil recently, and I have a lot to handle."
"We broke up because of the public opinion, news, and videos. Breaking up was the most straightforward and quickest way to understand the situation. Indeed, it wasn't entirely because of that. My mindset has changed a lot recently. I think we should reconsider our relationship. I also need to figure out what kind of wife I need."
With that, Michael stood up with a grim expression. His serious demeanor indeed scared Sophia.
Evelyn, watching from the side, was also stunned. She immediately got up and fawningly approached Michael. "Michael..."
Seeing Michael's stern gaze, Evelyn quickly corrected herself. "Mr. Smith, why are you scaring our Sophia like this! If she did something wrong, just tell me, and I'll teach her a lesson. It's not easy for you two to be together. How can you just break up like that?"
"Enough!" Michael had had enough. He immediately interrupted Evelyn, his expression turning dark. "The Smith Corporation's establishment wasn't easy either."
