Chapter 737
Chapter 737 He Will Not Let Anyone Go
Nicole's sharp nails were almost dug into the flesh of her palm as she forcefully suppressed her fear, not allowing anyone to notice her distress.
However, the slight trembling of her shoulders revealed her considerable unease.
With a firm grip on both Nicole's shoulders, Claire asked in a voice filled with anguish, "Nickie, tell me you haven't been using drugs, will you?"
Nicole's eyes flickered upon hearing Claire's question, her face was quickly covered with tears of sorrow. "Mom, don't you know what kind of person I am? I grew up by your side and have always been so timid that I'm even afraid to step on an ant. Do you really think I would do something illegal like drug use and possession? Everyone else can doubt me, but you're my mom, how can you not trust me?"
Nicole's frail appearance, coupled with her pressing questions, made Claire feel that she had gone too far.
As Avery watched Nicole's exquisite performance, she couldn't help but curl her lips.
Nicole's acting skills are actually decent. I expect no less from an actress. If only she had applied them to her acting career back then, she might have become incredibly successful. Unfortunately, she had used her cleverness in the wrong place.
Patting Nicole's shoulder, Claire softened her voice and spoke with deep concern. "It's not that I don't trust you, but the police suddenly showed up, accusing you of drug use and possession. I'm just worried about you... Nickie, since you haven't committed such a crime, we have nothing to fear. We are innocent and have nothing to hide from their investigation. I'll accompany you to the police station. I'll make sure they clear your name."
Upon hearing Claire's comforting words, Nicole didn't relax at all. Instead, the fear within her heart grew even stronger.
There would really be nothing to worry about if I were truly innocent, but I... Since the police have come knocking, they probably have some evidence of my crimes. If Mom finds out about my drug use, I would lose my place in the Lambert family.
With that thought in her mind, Nicole's face turned even paler, as if she was a ghost.
She looked up at Claire, clutching her head and pretending to be in severe pain. "Mom, I'm feeling really unwell today. My head is hurting badly. I'm in no condition to go to the police station. Can we go another day?"
Downstairs, the two police officers had been waiting for quite a while, yet Claire still hadn't brought Nicole down. Unable to wait any longer, they went up to the second floor, just in time to hear Nicole declining to go to the police station due to her feeling unwell.
The male police officer once again flashed his badge, speaking seriously to Nicole. "Ms. Lambert, we have orders to bring you to the police station for questioning today. Please do not obstruct us from enforcing the law."
"Mom, my head really hurts, and I feel like I can't catch my breath... What's happening to me?" Nicole said, touching her forehead as if she was in great pain. She subsequently shuddered, clutching her chest with her hand.
Suddenly, right in front of everyone, she softly collapsed on the ground, losing consciousness.
Avery didn't know what to say.
Nicole is indeed quite the drama queen, but her acting is so unconvincing.
The two police officers were equally speechless.
Ms. Nicole has fainted. How are we going to take her back? One of them looked at Claire with deep concern.
Thrown into panic, Claire was frantically calling out Nicole's name, "Nickie, what's wrong with you?"
"Mom, let me check on her. Just yesterday, she was prancing around, brimming with vitality. It's impossible that she's fallen so ill today that she would lose consciousness."
Avery walked up to Nicole, looking down at the latter's tightly shut eyes.
She was curious to see how long Nicole could keep up the act.
Pretending to have fainted, Nicole was in a state of turmoil internally. She knew that Claire would lose all reason out of concern for her if she fainted, but the same couldn't be expected of the despicable Avery. What should I do if she realizes that I'm just pretending?
However, there was absolutely no way out for her. If she didn't pass out, she would only end up being taken to the police station, a result she desperately wanted to avoid.
Avery squatted down and reached out her hand to forcefully pinch the tender flesh around Nicole's waist a few times.
Summer was a season for light clothing. Hence, when she deliberately pinched Nicole at her most vulnerable spot, Nicole winced in pain, the corner of her mouth twitching involuntarily, yet she refused to open her eyes and kept them tightly shut.
With an indiscernible smile, Avery glanced at Nicole before pinching her a few more times with greater intensity.
Nicole yelped in pain immediately, springing up from the floor like a jack-in-the-box. "Who was it? Who the hell dared to pinch me?"
Avery casually clapped her hands and said, "Now that you're awake, Nickie, you should go with the police to the station. Judging by the strength in your voice and your lively spirit, it seems like there's nothing seriously wrong with you."
Nicole attempted to lunge at Avery and scratch her face. "What has my health got anything to do with you? Stop pretending to be kind!"
Claire blocked Nicole's attack, protectively shielding Avery behind her. "Nickie, your sister is just trying to give you some advice out of goodwill, so don't be so rude! Now that you're awake, let me accompany you to the police station," Claire ordered in an authoritative tone.
Nicole immediately backed down, her eyes filled with hatred as she glared fiercely at Avery.
Her act of feigning illness had been exposed.
She knew that, no matter what, she couldn't avoid going to the police station this time. If she didn't go, it would only arouse her mother's suspicions.
Left with no other choice, she obediently followed the two police officers to the station.
Claire was worried about Nicole's safety. She urged Avery to take good care of Cal before hurrying after the police and Nicole.
After Nicole was taken away, an eerie silence immediately returned to the Lambert residence.
Avery pondered over the image of Nicole pretending to be sick and the resentful gaze the latter had before she left. Somehow, she couldn't shake off a sense of foreboding in his heart.
Meanwhile, Cayden sat in the CEO's chair at Trident Group, flipping through a thick stack of documents.
Xavier pushed the door open, serving Cayden a steaming cup of coffee. "Boss, your coffee."
After Cayden received the coffee and took a light sip, he seemed pleased with its fragrance. "Mr. Dartsley, your coffee-making skills have improved quite a bit."
Xavier laughed modestly. "You flatter me, Boss. Cecelia enjoys coffee, so I often make it for her. She doesn't like it too sweet or too bitter. Over time, I've naturally figured out the best balance."
Cayden gave him a thoughtful glance. "You and Cecelia seem to be getting along well. When do you plan to get married?"
Xavier choked a bit, scratching his head sheepishly. "Well, I'm still working hard on it. Boss, I just got news that Nicole has been taken to the police station on suspicion of drug use and possession. Also, according to our undercover informant, Roderick is planning a major drug deal in three days' time."
Cayden showed no emotions at all. "Well done. Dig up every single incident where Nicole hurt my wife before. This time, she won't be able to make a comeback. Also, keep a close eye on everything Roderick does. Report to me immediately if anything comes up."
A cold and murderous expression emerged on Cayden's face.
He wasn't going to let anyone who had hurt him and Avery before get away.
