Even so, I feel lighter for having written it, and my intent is that you feel lighter for having read it. Sworn Enemy’s main characters—Justin and Charlie—have failed suicide attempts in their history. We meet them after they are well into recovery, and these two deal with their histories using very honest language interspersed with dark humor. Justin and Charlie very much want to live, and—spoiler alert—neither have any suicidal ideation during the timeline of this book. Charlie works with survivors of human trafficking, and there are brief, mostly oblique descriptions of what they’ve been through. One of the survivors attempts self-harm but is quickly helped. While I’ve tried to handle this subject matter with respect, frank humor, and my typical darkness-bubble-wrapped-in-light style, this kind of thing’s not going to work for everyone. Please consider your needs and whether or not this is the right book for you to read. Unsurprisingly, my own history with suicide heavily influenced this book. Not to sound dramatic, but the unrequited love of my life died by suicide when I was in my early thirties. His death had a profound effect on me. I, like many of his friends, spent years wondering what I could’ve done to prevent this from happening. In the end, I found peace in simple acceptance of the many truths—both amazing and terrible—of the complex, difficult man I’d so pathetically adored. I say this with a lot of affection for the person I was back then. By the way, I loved writing this book because I was able to create a world in which they all live. And thrive.
