Chapter 264 She Got Angry
The more she thought about it, the angrier she became. It was so frustrating that she couldn't shut the thought off her head. To let it all out, she threw the phone away and closed her eyes to sleep. While lost in her dreams, she was pulled back to reality when her phone rang suddenly.
The next thing she knew was she was already sitting on her bed wondering who could be calling her so late at night. Who else could it be except for Charles?
At the thought of him, Nancy's mood lightened, and she was happy in a snap.
Excited to answer the call, she hurriedly took the phone.
However, to her dismay Doris' name appeared on her phone. It wasn't Charles after all and that disappointed Nancy.
While she was holding her phone and staring at the blinking screen, Nancy was speechless. Doris was supposed to be asleep by this time. She was pregnant and staying up this late wasn't good for the baby. Why would she call in such an unusual time? What could be wrong? Was she bored and just wanted to talk to someone? As she was confused at the unexpected call, Nancy's head was occupied by questions. At that one instance, when she told Doris that she could talk to her anytime, it was just superficial. She merely said that to make her feel good. As a thoughtful friend, Nancy, didn't expect that Doris would take i seriously and wanted to chat with her so late.
It all made sense to Nancy as Doris was a woman full of insecurities. Whenever she had a bad mood, she felt that everyone would leave her.
Considering how odd she was as a person, Nancy thought that Doris was way too different from Jay. Yet, whatever their differences were, their friendship was worth treasuring. They had been tested by time and polished by a lot of misunderstandings as well as forgiveness.
With that, a faint smile was drawn on Nancy's face as she answered the phone.
"Hello, Doris. Isn't it late? Why aren't you in bed yet?" Nancy asked slackly.
"Hi, Nancy did I wake you up? I can't fall asleep because Jay isn't home yet. I'm worried for I know that he's such a womanizer. I know he's just playing around with women. No one can win his heart, neither can I," Doris said in a sad tone evident in her voice.
Caught in between her friends, Nancy didn't know what to say. She could only cover-up for Jay without hurting Doris at the same time.
"What made you think about that? He might be busy. Don't worry, and Jay won't make any trouble. You are just overthinking. Stressing yourself out and being anxious like that will affect the baby in your womb. Pregnant women should always be happy and relaxed. You of all people should know that, Doris. Don't you give your patients the same advice as a doctor? How can't you know about such things?" Nancy consoled and advised her in a soft tone. Pausing for a while, Nancy continued, "Look, Doris, Jay must have gone out to attend a social engagement. Charles isn't home yet either. Maybe the two of them are together."
"But Jay didn't tell me where he was going today. Also, he never mentioned about any social engagement. I can't help worrying about him," Doris said in a low spirit. Nancy could imagine how low-spirited she looked on the other end of the line.
"Well, honey why don't you just go to bed and have some sleep for now. For sure when you wake up Jay will be there!" Nancy coaxed her friend in the most soothing way she could.
"I have slept for a while but was bothered waking up without Jay. How can you guarantee that he will be here when I wake up again?" asked Doris with a stubborn tone.
At the thought of Doris' question, Nancy realized that she indeed couldn't guarantee such thing to happen, simply because she didn't know where Jay went.
"Haven't you tried calling him to ask where he went? Or who is he with?" implored Nancy after thinking for a while.
"I did call him, but it didn't get through. Can you call Charles and ask him if he is with Jay?" Doris responded. Nancy could feel that she was extremely anxious. Thus, she was left with no choice but to help relieve Doris out of her worry.
"Okay, I'll call him right now. Just give me a minute," Nancy responded and held Doris on the line. Scrolling on her contact list, she found Charles' contact number and called him.
Not a ring was heard, no busy tone or a voicemail saying that the phone couldn't be reached. Charles' phone was off. That was unusual of him, and that surprised Nancy at the moment.
She tried dialing again but still no response from Charles. With that, Nancy was baffled. 'What could have happened to the two of them? No matter what they were doing, it was not their habit to turn off their phones.
What were they up to? She was starting to feel worried as well, and her thoughts were racing as to what could have possibly happened.
'Did they really go on a date with girls?' she assumed. That was the worst that she could imagined.
Knowing Charles, she didn't believe that he was an uninhibited man. What she was afraid was if he couldn't resist all the sugar-coated persuasions from Jay.
After all, she couldn't be certain what a man could do in front of a seductive woman. Sometimes they couldn't simply say no-that was their weakness.
Thinking about it sent some chills down Nancy's spine. Her heart ached as if it was frozen and shattered by someone. Anger was welling up inside her, and when she was about to break down in tears, Doris' call deviated her attention.
"Nancy, did you call Charles? Where on earth did they go? Is Jay with him? When will they be going home?" asked Doris anxiously.
Realizing that she couldn't blame Doris for being anxious, Nancy couldn't lie to her. So, she had to tell her the truth, "Doris, Charles' phone... It's also out of reach. I guess he turned it off."
"What? Charles' phone is also off?" Doris blurted out. "That's it! I knew it! They have gone hooking up with other women. If it's just anything else, why would they turn off their phones? Jay and Charles are hiding something from us. They don't want us to know what they're doing, and it appears that they don't want to be disturbed. They knew very well that they couldn't have fun if we knew. Oh, those bastards! They're all scum," Doris continued. She was hysterical this time. "I should have known this from the start. What should I do now? I don't want to give birth to a child with such a shameless father. You know how much I have endured Nancy? I can't eat or sleep properly every day just by thinking about him. How could he be comfortable- with other women?" Doris uttered in between sobs. Nancy was worried, hearing her breaking down. Her thoughts ran wild as Doris might do something that would put her life and the baby in line. "I don't want this baby anymore. I'll have an abortion tomorrow morning," Doris shouted angrily, after a few moments of silence.
After those words, Nancy was mesmerized. Her hands were shivering, yet she managed to pull herself up and told Doris, "What were you thinking Doris? Don't worry about Jay. We don't know what exactly is happening. We don't know where they have gone. It's too early for you to decide to abort the baby. I understand you're disappointed with Jay, but you can't vent all your anger on the baby. It is innocent. As a mother, how could you be so cruel? The baby is your flesh and blood, the fruit of the love you've shared with Jay. How can you have the heart to abandon it just like that? Now that it's still in your womb, you should be responsible for it and protect it at all cost. Don't say such silly words again. Don't even think about it. Do you understand?" Nancy soothed and tried to change Doris' mind.
"No! No! I'm not stupid like you. If Jay is with another woman, he will abandon me. I can't raise a child on my own. I can't do it; it's too horrible. Come to think of it; he goes out to have fun, and I am left alone to take care of our child. It's so unfair! I've made up my mind. Don't try and persuade me anymore," uttered Doris in between sobs.
Since she got pregnant, Doris had changed a lot. It might be because of her hormones or the adjustments she was undergoing in having the baby.
Yet, whatever it was Nancy really missed the carefree and straightforward version of her.
Being with her for quite some time, Nancy knew that she was never a nagger as she was now.
"Okay, Doris, calm down. Let's find out the truth before you make a decision. Just relax for now. You can't decide on things just because you're angry," Nancy said, not giving up on persuading her. Though she was doing her best to calm Doris, Nancy was over the edge for her friend. She thought, 'I feel sorry for Doris' baby. Why does it have a mother like her?'
"No Nancy, you don't understand. I want to know the truth right now. How can we find the truth? Tell me!" shouted Doris over the phone while crying. Nancy thought she was completely out of control with her emotions-it was eating her up.
"Well know the truth when they come back. Can you please wait patiently?"
"I can't do that. I won't wait, not even a minute. Jay is driving me nuts. I just want to know the truth as soon as possible. I guess I have to do that myself. I'll find him."
Hearing the rustling sounds from the other end, Nancy knew that Doris got out of bed.
"Doris, what do you think are you doing? It's late, and it's not safe. Where are you going to find him?" asked Nancy. "If something bad happens, it's not worth it. Can you just have a good rest and wait?" she continued.
"No, I'm going to look for him right now. If you can ignore what Charles has done, I can't do the same for what Jay has done. Go to sleep. I'll find my husband myself. Anyways, I can't fall asleep at home, better yet make use of my time," responded Doris.
"Where are you going? What if you can't find him?" asked Nancy while quickly putting on her clothes and shoes.
"There are only a few famous bars and nightclubs. I'll check each one and I believe I can find them there," responded Doris confidently.
Realizing that she couldn't change her mind, Nancy reckoned in a hurry, "Sounds like a good plan, Doris. I'll go with you. Wait for me. I'll just drive and pick you up."
The worried friend that was Nancy let out a sigh. She was left with no choice. Aside from Doris' stubbornness, she was also pregnant. Nancy couldn't let her go out on her own.
"Thank goodness. I knew I can rely on you. You're my best friend. I knew you would go with me. I'll wait for you. Hurry up."
"Okay, put on more clothes. It's cold and I don't want you to be sick. You have to take care of yourself for the baby," said Nancy full of concern.
