Chapter 261 A Horrible Woman
Jessie's suspension worked to Anna's advantage. She took over Jessie's post while the investigation was ongoing. Given the circumstances, it was unlikely that Jessie would get her position back. Anna had experienced working abroad, and her character was even worse than Jessie's. Anna wasn't greedy for money like Jessie was, but she was hungry for power. There was nothing she wouldn't do to gain more of it.
Truly, Jessie was a lot things. She was a bit of a fool with a despicable personality, but at least she was responsible when it came to handling patients. Anna was a different kind of evil. She was much worse. She would stop at nothing to trample on anyone who stood in her way. She would ruin that person's reputation and more so they would never be a problem to her again.
Simply put, this woman was horrible.
Lost in her thoughts, Nancy walked into her office.
Soon after, Erin arrived. "Nancy, do you need antiinflammatory drugs for bed 12?"
"Not yet. Let's wait and observe the patient first. Thanks, Erin." Nancy rubbed her temples thoughtfully.
"Okay, I'll monitor the patient." As soon as the conversation was over, Erin turned around and walked outside.
"Wait a minute, Erin." Nancy called on her, stopping Erin in her tracks.
Immediately, Erin turned back to face Nancy and walked a few steps towards her. "Yes, Director Nancy? Is there anything you want to tell me?"
"Yes." A few moments passed before Nancy spoke again. "Jessie has been suspended for investigation. What do you think of such a punishment?"
"I don't know, Director Nancy. I've always known about Jessie's wrongdoings, but I haven't given much thought about how she should be punished. Yes, her character flaws need to be corrected, but that's just one aspect of who she is. It would be too bad if she couldn't be a doctor anymore because of this. Well, I couldn't make up my mind. But if you think about it, blunders like that should be punished, right?"
"Yes, regardless of who did it, when someone does wrong they should be punished. Rules are rules. But what if she already learned her lesson and apologizes for it? Doesn't she deserve a second chance to make things right? To start over?" Nancy asked, pondering.
There was no excuse for what Jessie did. She thought it was repulsive. But as a doctor herself, Nancy understood how much Jessie had to go through to be a Director at a hospital. After all those gruesome years of studying, it would be a pity to have it put to waste because of this. She could feel her heart break for Jessie just thinking about it.
"Yeah, people should be forgiven if they can could correct their mistakes. If only Jessie could break her bad habits, then there wouldn't be any problem. Everything will be so much better," Erin said with a hopeful smile.
"Well, I don't want to keep you from your work. I also have a surgery scheduled this afternoon; I have to prepare for it," said Nancy as she waved her hand.
"Right. I should go. See you later, Director Nancy." Erin walked away in a light mood.
Nancy picked up her phone and clicked on WeChat.
Jessie's suspension and investigation was the talk of the town. Their colleagues couldn't stop talking about it. Indeed, the tide had turned. Those who used to sing Jessie praises were the same people criticizing her now. How quickly people changed!
Just when Nancy was about to speak up for Jessie and comfort her, the latter left the group chat.
Nancy weighed whether she should say something, but in the end she just decided to say nothing.
She turned off her phone and slid it in her bag. She started preparing for the surgery. After she changed her clothes, she walked out of her office and headed to the operating room.
That day's operation was quite complicated. The patient was a child with an injured ankle. He was very young and was probably very playful. If he moved too much after the operation, he might have another injury. Another injury could cause a permanent disability. Therefore, Nancy needed to be extra careful.
She could not afford to get distracted so she put aside all thoughts of Jessie for the time being. She would focus on the surgery and nothing else.
But Anna was standing in front of the operating room. She looked proud and pleased with herself. It seemed like she just finished an operation. Nancy couldn't help but frown with disdain.
Why couldn't Anna keep a low profile? Why was she always trying to catch attention?
Nancy didn't dislike her for no good reason. She just couldn't stand Anna's reeking arrogance.
"You have an operation, Director Nancy?" Anna greeted
her.
"Yes. How about you? You just finished a surgery?" Nancy responded politely.
"That's right. By the way, I assume that you already heard. Jessie was suspended so I'm temporarily replacing her as director of the First Pediatric Department. Aren't you going to congratulate me?" Anna said arrogantly, raising her chin.
Nancy would have congratulated Anna if the circumstances had been different. She would have been glad for her if the promotion went according to due process. But that was not the case.
It was clear that Anna would use the situation to her advantage.
Nancy couldn't get herself to congratulate her.
To get out of the uncomfortable situation, she quickened her pace towards the operating room. 'Tm sorry, but I have to get inside the operating room now. Let's just talk about it some other time." Looking at Nancy's receding figure, Anna snorted with disdain.
"One day, I'll be the director of the two departments. Don't be complacent, Nancy. Just wait and you'll see," she muttered to herself. Anna took off her mask and threw it into the trash bin.
It was three o'clock in the afternoon when Nancy finished the operation. She was famished so she grabbed a meal afterwards. She turned on her phone, thinking about sending Jessie a message on WeChat. But her train of thought was interrupted after seeing the notification of Doris' many calls.
Something wrong must have happened; otherwise she wouldn't try to call so many times.
Nancy called Doris back, and the latter answered
immediately.
"My stomach is aching, Nancy!"
"What happened, Doris? How's the baby?" Doris was pregnant. A stomachache would be very dangerous both for her and the baby. "Did you eat anything that could possibly be contaminated or spoiled, causing you stomach discomfort?"
"No, I don't think so. I also believe that the baby is fine. My stomach just hurts and I feel lonely." Doris started to cry.
"Nancy, I want to go to back to work, but Jay wouldn't allow me. By the way, I stayed up waiting for him all night, but he didn't come home. Where did he go? Do you think he's seeing other women? That man has very little self control. He can't live without being intimate with women. But I'm pregnant now so I can't satisfy his needs. He must have gone out to seek pleasure from other women."
"Please don't overthink, Doris. Jay is not irresponsible. You shouldn't get over-worried. Moreover..." Nancy stopped herself from saying anything that would upset Doris further. "Think about it more carefully. You shouldn't hold on to Jay too tightly because he also needs his space. Men tend to feel suffocated by that kind of treatment."
"No, that's really not the case. I couldn't get a hold of him. He comes and goes as he pleases. Until now, I'm still unsure if he genuinely loves me. Maybe he only married me for the sake of his sick grandfather,' complained Doris.
"You just have so much time right now to overthink. If you really want to know his whereabouts, follow him to the company. Then you'll the kind of people he meets with every day and you don't have to worry too much, okay?" Nancy said in a serious but spirited voice, trying to make the atmosphere light.
'Okay, you're right. From tomorrow on, I'll come with
him wherever he goes. I wouldn't let any woman come near him," exclaimed Doris.
