Chapter 252 It's The Responsibility Of A Doctor To Save Lives
Nancy needed time to process what she saw and everything Erin said. The room was silent for about ten minutes.
She already knew about Jessie's greed, but she didn't expect it was that much. It was as if she was exchanging her conscience for money. Nancy was a doctor herself. Jessie should know that it was their responsibility as doctors to save lives and heal the wounded.
Finally, Nancy broke the silence. "Erin, please put the notebook here," she said with a sigh.
"Director Nancy, you must keep this a secret for my sake! If Jessie finds out about this. I'll be in big trouble!" Erin pleaded.
"Don't worry, Erin. I know exactly what to do," replied Nancy in a reassuring voice.
"Thank you. That's really good to know. I have to get back to work now." After saying this, Erin walked out of the room. Nancy's heart felt heavy for the rest of the day.
After a long day at the hospital, she needed to call Charles and hear his voice.
Charles, meanwhile, had just walked out of the CEO's office. He was on his way to pick up the children in the kindergarten.
The sudden call from Nancy surprised him. "How come you have free time now?" His gladness was evident in his voice.
"Well, it's because I want to see you," said Nancy whose voice revealed that she was feeling lonely.
"Why? Is there anything wrong?" Charles was concerned. He tried to lighten up her mood by teasing, "Oh, I know why. You probably miss me."
Surprisingly, Nancy still sounded melancholic. "No, I don't. That's different from wanting to see you."
"Well, if you say so. Wait for me. I'll come right over to pick you up," replied Charles.
"Wait for me at the steamed bun shop on the east side of the hospital. I'll see you there!" suggested Nancy.
"Okay, that sounds good." Something was bothering Nancy today, Charles could tell. Her mood was unusually gloomy.
He couldn't help but wonder about what could have happened. He hoped he would find out soon enough.
Nancy wasn't really the type who got bothered by gossip and what other people thought. What could have happened today?
Charles felt worried and uneasy for the whole duration of the trip. He drove as quick as he could towards their meeting place. When he arrived, Nancy was already there. She was occupying one of the tables on the far end of the shop.
It was autumn now. She wore a cream-colored windbreaker, blue jeans and a pair of white sneakers.
Her smooth hair was a little messy; some strands fell over to her face. Maybe it was because of the wind. Even from afar, one could tell that Nancy was intelligent and witty.
Nancy?" He called her name after he stopped the car and rolled down the window.
Nancy stood up and walked over to his car. He could see in her face that indeed, she was feeling lonely today.
When she reached the passenger side of the car, she opened the door and hopped in.
"What's wrong, Nancy? You look troubled." Charles started the car as he asked.
Nancy was contemplating whether it was wise tell Charles about Jessie.
If she told him, it was likely that he would fire Jessie. Otherwise, he would come up with a reasonable punishment.
But how about Anna? What would happen to her in the event that Jessie got fired?
Without question, her professional experience was not half as much as Jessie's.
Nancy remained quiet for a while. She continued to deliberate whether she should share the newly discovered information with Charles. In the end, she decided against telling him. "Anna tried to hurt Boyd. Are you going to let that go?" Charles suddenly asked, interrupting her thoughts.
"I wouldn't, but there are so many patients now. If we let them leave, there wouldn't be enough doctors to take care of all the patients," Nancy said, a bit embarrassed.
"You always think about others. When will you prioritize yourself?" Charles sighed, feeling a mix frustration and worry.
Tm a doctor. It's almost instinctive for me to look after my patients' wellbeing above my own," responded Nancy plainly. With that sad look on her face, Charles knew there was nothing he could do right now to lift her spirit.
Besides, what she said was true. He couldn't argue against it.
Soon enough, they reached their destination: the kindergarten.
Bobby and Nadia were standing in the yard, where they usually waited after school.
Spotting the arrival of Nancy and Charles, the kids' eyes lit up with excitement.
"Daddy and mommy both came to pick us up again!" The two kids shouted with joy and ran towards them at the same pace.
"Yes, we're here! Are you happy?" Nancy bent down and stretched out her arms to embrace the children.
"Yes! I'm very happy, mommy. We're superstars now!" Nadia said, jumping up and down.
"Superstar? Who is?" Nancy was laughing with the kids, thinking they were only joking. As a pediatrician, she knew how children could have very creative imagination.
"We are! We were on TV yesterday, mommy. The children in school surrounded us, saying that I was handsome and Nadia was beautiful. That's true, isn't it, mommy? Bobby asked Nancy excitedly.
All the children in the kindergarten suddenly wanted to be friends with Bobby and Nadia. They watched them on yesterday's TV broadcast of the "Family" program featuring Charles, Nancy and the two children.
Bobby noticed that there was something different the moment he arrived at the kindergarten this morning. All the children looked at him with amazement and admiration. The kids in the kindergarten didn't just see Bobby; they saw a TV star.
"Hey, Bobby! I saw you on TV! You were so handsome!"
"That's true, Bobby. I like you so much!" "Your mommy and daddy, are they going to get married?"
Bobby basked in the adoration of the other children. He was so proud. He flashed his biggest smile. "Yes! My daddy and mommy are getting married soon," he announced with full confidence. "It won't be long until we have a little brother or sister!" Bobby turned to Nadia for affirmation, "Right, Nadia?"
"Yes, indeed, Bobby!" Nadia was as glad as Bobby, but she noticed something that made her feel a little disappointed. Why did all the girls like Bobby while the boys didn't even approach her?
"Okay, settle down now, kids. Give Bobby some space. Go back to your seats," the teacher said as she entered the door. The children followed her order.
The teacher glanced with endearment at Bobby and Nadia. She asked them with a smile, "You've been on the top search, did you know?"
Nadia blinked in confusion and asked, "Teacher, what's the top search?"
"It means that everyone knows that you are little stars now," the teacher explained.
"Little stars?" Nadia was still puzzled.
"Yes, just like big stars whom everyone knows," the teacher repeated her explanation.
"Wow. Does that mean that I will be invited to act in a movie someday, teacher?" Nadia was obviously getting so excited. Joy was very apparent in her eyes.
"Well, let's see... There's a good chance that will happen. But it will still depend on whether your daddy and mommy will agree. You are still very young. For now, you need to focus on your studies!" the teacher reminded her.
"Oh, okay, teacher. I understand." Nadia agreed with her teacher, but her eyes were still lit up with excitement. She liked how it felt to be a star, liked it very much.
Especially the idea of signing autographs for fans. That would be so cool!
Nadia couldn't help but look forward to that day when fans would chase her, shouting her name. "Nadia! Nadia! Please give me your autograph!"
"Daddy, will you and mommy allow us to be stars? Would you let us act in movies?" Nadia looked up at her dad and waited for his answer.
Charles patted her little head and said, "You two are still so young. After you finish college, maybe then you can be stars."
Nadia counted with her fingers. "Wow, that's so many years ahead, daddy. When can I go to college?"
Nancy hugged Nadia to comfort her and said, "Don't worry, my daughter. Take your time. Let's go home."
"I wish that time would pass by fast so I can be a star now!" Nadia said as she pouted unhappily.
"But there are many young stars, right? Daddy, mommy?" Bobby suddenly asked.
Charles and Nancy looked at each other. Nancy shrugged and sighed.
Charles held Bobby's hand and they started walking towards the car.
While walking, he asked, "Do you worship stars?"
